Does anyone also agree with me that Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles is just not that great?
Not a big fan of the chicken. But the "Big Mama's Special" is pretty damned good. Really creamy/cheesy scrambled eggs with smothered potatoes. Heart attack on a plate.
For some reason, I can't get rid of the link to a Gardena restaurant.

Best place you ate at this week?
Warner Bros. Commissary. Very good piece of salmon with sun-dried tomatoes
When you recommend SGV for Chinese food, are there particular cities you're generally talking about?
Laguna Beach is a LONG ways from the SGV. It's at least 40 miles one-way, so a trip to the SGV will be a day trip, particularly if you are going mid-week. That said, I hope you do go, as the other posters have listed some fantastic places to eat.
Gang of newbies @ Mei Long Village
I took someone there for the first time just the other day for the pork pump. She kept saying she couldn't believe it was pork, when you could make out what she was saying at all.
Smoke House in Burbank
I hadn't been to Beckham Grill in a few years, so I went a month or so ago. Friday night at 7 and they were out of prime rib. It's a prime rib restaurant for criminy's sake.

BBQ in a Liquor Store, near LAX?
The only thing like that I know of is in Torrance. There's a BBQ place in a liquor store on the corner of Torrance and Western. Think it's a Pacific Liquor. Unfortunately, I've never tried it.
What restaurants have ruined you?
The chicken fried steak at Eat At Joe's in Redondo Beach. I'm sure people think there are much better versions, but I can't find anywhere else that duplicates the taste of the meat and gravy for me.
The chili fries at Tops in Pasadena (Walnut). It's just fries and nothing-special chili, but I love it.
There's a carne asada burrito at The Burger Shack (used to be called Cypress Burgers) on Walnut in Pasadena that I crave about once a week. It doesn't taste like most other places but I have to have it.

Downey lunch spots
I'm going to be working in Downey soon and don't know the area that well. Is there anything close by bellflower/Imperial Highway worth going to?
Carne Asada UnCooked
In Pasadena, Dona Rosa Market on the corner of Allen and Villa. It's behind a Pueblas Tacos restaurant. Terrific carne asada and their pollo preperado is like eating candy.
Best Gas Station Hot Dog in Los Angeles?
Can't speak for gas station dogs, but Flea Market hot dog stands are pretty good. Try the few that are at the PCC flea market.
Spiciest Polish Sausage in LA
I know Pink's doesn't get a lot of love on this board, but their spicy Polish is very good IMO. Quite hot too.
The Current State of Dumplings in SGV
I really like their fried dumplings. They fry to a very thick crust which I love, but others don't. I think it was ExileKiss who found them too chewy but they are perfect for me.
Short Ribs
If you are in Pasadena, go to Alexander's Meats inside of Howie's Market in San Gabriel. I've gotten terrific short ribs there.
Memphis BBQ in the SGV?
Bonnie B's is not bad. It's definitely not a Memphis dry-rub joint though.
LA Food Tour: Signature Item Cheap Eats
Yes they do as far as I know. They were open for dinner for a couple years, but I think they've gone back to just breakfast and lunch

Nick's Cafe ... best hash browns ever.
I used to go there a lot, but it's been about a year since my last visit. I need to go soon. It's very close to my work downtown.
Spiciest beef noodle soup
I seem to have a hard time finding very spicy beef noodle soup in SGV (admittedly I've not tried a lot of places). Kingburg Kitchen seems to have the hottest version I've found so far. JTLY has great noodles and great beef, but no matter what I say, the broth is just not hot enough. Dean Sin World also had kind of bland broth.
So, where can I get really spicy beef noodle soup?

Old School Last Night @ the Dal Rae in Pico Rivera
I love this place. I love the made-tableside offerings, so it's almost always the Caesar, Steak Diane and cherries jubilee for my group.
Interesting version of an Oki Dog.
I had a great breakfast burrito from this truck when they were serving food for a historical tour in Pasadena I was on. I've noticed they are often in front of the Paseo complex on Colorado too.
