Best Banh Mi in TO

It depends on the place - it could either be whole sliced pork hock or more like a head cheese. Definitely not a pate though!

Gio Nguoi = cold braised pork hock
Gio La Chuoi = pork hock wrapped in banana leaves

where to find Egyptian koshari in Toronto?

I too had the koshari at Baba Geddo (for the first time) and loved it. Pure comfort food and the old woman who made it was very nice.

Cake in Kitchener/Waterloo

My parents are looking to order an 8-10" cake for this weekend in the $30-40 range in KW. For reference, they usually order taro mousse cakes from T&T but they won't be able to come to Toronto this time. They also really like Ruelo. Asian-style would be their preference but not a must - as long as it's tasty! Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

North York City Centre Asian food

Ten Ren's Tea Time is still open and offers decent food. Think homestyle, nothing too fancy, but filling and wallet-friendly.

One of the best comment by a food critic - Amy Pateki on Susur Lee's 'Bent'

+1 to not judging Bent on someone else's words and also to her review being BS (nothing new there).

I celebrated my birthday dinner there and enjoyed both the meal and the service. We had:
-Peruvian-style ceviche, which was a bit one-note and tomato-heavy
-Tuna and watermelon ceviche, which offered light, fresh yet complex flavours. Lots of singular components that offered good textural difference and worked really well together in one bite.
-Duck salad, which has yielded many comparisons to the Singaporean Slaw. I prefer the latter, but still enjoyed the former. Wish there was more duck, especially the cracklings, in the dish though as the salad itself, albeit tasty, is too big and gets boring near the end.
-Braised short rib. Very tender, flavourful and no issues with the temperature. Spicing reminded me of the Vietnamese bo kho.

We also enjoyed two cocktails:
-Gin Sour - I'm a huge fan of gin and loved this lemony delight that tasted like the last bit of summer in a glass
-Asian Caesar - I enjoyed this a lot, even though it was more like a spicy gazpacho than a traditional Caesar. The sesame and chili oil really made it special.

400 Coups or Le Club Chasse et Peche

Hello all - I will be in town in November with my SO to celebrate his brithday. I am looking to have dinner on a Friday at either 400 Coups or Le Club Chasse et Peche. I have read extensively on this site about each individual restaurant and both sound lovely, but am having difficulty discerning which is the better option for a memorable meal as this will be our only fine dining dinner of the weekend. Money is no object. Unfortunately we will not arrive early enough for the Friday lunch at 400 Coups. Thanks in advance!

I too was not a huge fan of the ramen when I tried it in NYC but I will give it another shot.

Urraca Resto Lounge

Thanks, Ben. Your review was the deciding factor after reading some other mediocre reviews online. I've now decided to move my party to Hapa as I'm interested to see how it compares to Guu, at which I've dined many times.

any recent reviews of sushi couture's tasting menu?

Ok, thanks for the info. I do support changes that will keep them successful, but most of the new menu options seem to cater to the vegetarian crowd (i.e. not necessarily new/innovative for now). Also, I compared the new menu with the old menu and the price hikes are on the *same* dishes so $3-6 more seems like a huge increase as I don't think the quality will necessarily be higher.

Urraca Resto Lounge

I'm thinking of having a group dinner here. Has anyone been to this relatively new spot? If so, how does it compare to Guu, Hapa and other izakayas? I know a direct comparison may not be possible given this is Korean, not Japanese, fare.

any recent reviews of sushi couture's tasting menu?

Really?? Do you know why? They always seem to be packed during lunch.

EDIT: Just checked their website and new menu (effective Sept. 4). Some new entrees have been added and across the board price hike to previously existing items. For example, the entrees are all now $3-6 more!

I stopped by for lunch yesterday, but the lights were off and no one inside. Weird!

I have noticed a bit of a swinging door in terms of the servers and the service can be slow and spotty at times, but the owner is fantastic and super nice. The food is great too so hopefully they will get a regular and reliable team of waitstaff soon.

TOFoodfest

Thanks for the detailed report, atomeyes. I also attended this event and was pleasantly surprised by the diverse (and tasty!) low-cost high-quality food offerings. The short lines and manageable crowd were definitely a bonus. Given the usual gripes at admission costs for events such as TUM, it was nice to walk into the event and peruse the booths without any pressure to make the experience worth the admission cost. The biggest attraction for me was having all of these vendors in one area, many of which I've wanted to visit for some time but haven't due to their varied distance/location.

My report, based on what I can remember, in order of consumption:

How 'Bout Those Meatballs - $1 meatball sliders. Tender juicy meatballs were smothered in a non-sugar laden tasty tomato sauce that was so good, I saw people purchasing containers of just the sauce.

Tacocat - This booth had run out of tortillas by the time we got there, but this worked out for the best as this shaved off $1.50 off the plate charge, resulting in $2.50/$2.75 for a plate of deep fried clamari with mango sauce and scallions. A rather small plate that whet our appetite.

Rodney's Oysters - 3 freshly shucked oysters for $5. Light, refreshing and everything you would expect from Rodney's at a much lower cost than dine-in.

Pavita Restaurant - As the only Indian food booth at the event, I did not expect much. For $5, I received a mango lassi and generous plate of two very large pea and potato samosas and a green salad smothered with sweet and tangy chickpea curry. Delicious! They had other main dish options, but I can never turn down a samosa. I would definitely like to visit the restaurant.

Big Moe's - I have been curious about this place since reading about it on CH, despite the mixed reviews. They offered a $5 slider version of their signature Juicy Lucy (burger injected with cheese in the middle), topped with lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mayo and mustard. Not being a huge cheese-lover, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this burger. The cheese centre melted in the cooking process, permeating the meat with a light cheese flavour that did not overwhelm. This booth had the longest line (about a 10-minute wait).

Tony Chiu - HK-style milk tea for $3, I believe. I opted for the cold version as it was really hot that day. The cup had a few ice cubes, but I was too impatient for the tea to get cold. I would like to try the hot version.

Can't remember the name - $5 beer-battered banana fritters with Ontario peach and mango coulis, dusted with cinnamon sugar. This was a wonderful way to end the day. The bananas were perfectly soft, sweet and ripe, the batter was light and crispy, the tart coulis cut the sweetness and the cinnamon sugar added a nice spice.

I hope this is/becomes a regular event.

Best Pork Dishes

Thank you everyone for your suggestions so far. Please know that I am reading them all and compiling a massive list (don't want to clog the thread with individual "thank yous"). Hopefully we can try a few of these this weekend. The few pork items the SO has had so far have not been "impressive" enough so I'm hoping to show him the best of the best :) I will report back once we've made some dents in this list.

Best Pork Dishes

My SO recently started eating pork again after over a decade and I would like to re-introduce him through the best pork dishes that Toronto offers. As you will see from the list I've begun to compile below, we're not selective in cuisine. I would love others' recommendations. Thanks!

Holy Chuck's brined, roasted and glazed pork belly sandwich (as per TorontoJo's recommendation)
Northern Dumpling House's pork with garlic chili sauce and xiao long bao
John's BBQ's King of Char Sui
Owl of Minerva's gamjatang
pulled pork at ? (suggestions welcome)

GTA Gelato Wars 2012

I usually hate pistachio gelato and milky/creamy flavours as well but I love Simply's version. I heard they import their pistachios from Sicily; every mouthful is like eating a cold creamy spoonful of pistachios.
