Top Chef - D.C. - Ep. #6 - 07/21/10 (Spoilers)
My family and I watch the show faithfully, but this is the first season where I feel like the producers have mailed it in, decided to be more like other "reality' shows. Last week's challenge was ood - no details at all, go ... - this week's was actually worse. Survivor Chef might have been more interesting if they'd made the dishes anonymous, or mixed up the names. I'd be happy with less intrigue, more talent.
restaurant week?
Thanks. Monday was only choice, per schedule. So gone it was. Nice to have that cleared up.
restaurant week?
thank you. monday in mid-july was day available, first tried cafe boulud at noon, at open table and it was gone. mesa was next and family cheered. i think dw wants a duck pancake and there's some sentiment for a churro among the boys. best regards.
restaurant week?
Hi,
Family wanted to try Mesa Grill, restaurant week deal matches vacation schedule. Question is, can the table do 3 "special menus" and one as is, or are we locked in? I can understand restaurant wanting to keep it simple, but ticket will be good bit higher, w/ room to roam.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.
Gift, now dinner where?
Sorry. On cost, that leaves out tax, tip. We're staying in Midtown East. New American is appealing, as are Italian and French, Latin and Greek, Indian, Middle Eastern and Spanish/tapas. We're likely spending early part of day downtown, so noodles, Chinese will hopefully be covered. Don't mind a cab ride.
Gift, now dinner where?
Hi,
I've been given a bunch of good suggestions for family trip over long weekend in July, again thanks.
Got a card from mother in law today for father's day, and she would like me to use enclosed for a NY meal for family. It would be likely Sunday night, 4 of us - wife and I, 18 and 11 year old - for a special occasion dinner. call it up to $70 pp, I'll sort out bevs, etc. Glad to pay a bit less.
What follows isn't meant to sound whiny, but trying to make a good call:
Mostly interested in good food, cool, welcoming atmosphere. It's a bit of a surprise for other three diners. I don't mind a name restaurant, dressing up a bit, I do mind feeling like a tourist rube - so, prefer less well known and good, vs. "Wow, we're here" and then a lousy time.
Sons are pretty hearty eaters, older one doesn't like sushi much.
Thanks for any help, if too involved a request, I certainly understand.
Dining decision, ambitious kid
That's precisely what I wondered. Thanks. We're arriving Friday around lunchtime, so am trying to figure out first lunch in New York, w/ certainly hungry kids. Thinking about Otto, maybe grazing at Grand Central.
Dining decision, ambitious kid
Hi, just saw where Restaurant Week will take place in part while we are in New York. For good deal, good food, is it worth taking a shot? Thank you.
Dining decision, ambitious kid
Thank you all for many cool suggestions. It's nice to consider all the choices.
Dining decision, ambitious kid
Sorry, I didn't make clear. Son and I are independent of theatre-goers, left to own devices I'd go to $60pp, plus dad's wine. Less is appealing, but not nuts about it.

Looks like my wife and older son will be seeing a show Saturday night in July, while we're visiting New York.
My younger son - too much exposure to Top Chef, etc. - wants to go big while they're at show. Looking around, French Culinary Institute seems like a pretty good option - fancy, not too haughty (one assumes), good price, etc.
Point of post is to ask, if you've got a starry-eyed, would-be snobbish 11-year-old w a big appetite in Big Apple on a Saturday night, and price is a bit of an object, what would you do?
I realize, question is a bit absurd, so thanks for any help.
Kid will eat will eat most stuff, though he's anti-cheese.
$100, or so, and NYC wine shops
Sorry. It was a bit late, stupidly/blearily thought I was posting on wine board. No excuses, patience is much appreciated. Thanks for all the helpful replies, looking forward to trip.
$100, or so, and NYC wine shops
Hi,
My family is taking a trip to New York in July. We're driving from Alabama. Among the many head-turning options is finding a wine store or two and buying some things we normally wouldn't find, or at least at a similar price, in Huntsville, Al.
I'd be grateful for any recommendations about either shops or bottles.
We're pretty open on range of wines. My wife is happiest w/ a wine that you can taste a bit of the dirt the grapes grew in. I'm always happiest when it's good and a good deal.
Any help is much appreciated.
Nice problem, but still
Sorry, home is Huntsville, Alabama. It's not really like Alabama in general - NASA's here, lot of tech co's - but it's a considerable distance from New York.
Nice problem, but still
Hi,
I'm bringing family (wife, 18-yrold, 11-yrold sons) to New York for first time in July, I know, for a long weekend. We're struggling a bit w/ being overwhelmed by choices. Trying to be smart about meal prices, $50 pp is more than I'd like to pay, though I'm sure we'll do it once or twice.
We're staying in midtown west. Hotel Belvedere says it has a fridge, which may make shopping/picnic easier.
We're all pretty adventurous eaters and willing to walk, ride as part of our adventure.
I'm not really asking for multiple recommendations, or links, - though those are certainly appreciated - as much as a "don't miss this" type suggestion.
I know we'll seek out pizza, noodles, bagels, a burger, likely the oyster bar counter at Grand Central, Chinatown and stuff we can grab for a picnic. I keep thinking we should seek out food we can't get anywhere near home. etc. The net is full of options, the city and boroughs - just walking around - even moreso, so maybe we won't go terribly wrong, but any wisdom NYC hounds can share is genuinely appreciated.
My 11-year-old keeps arguing for Le Bernardin. Eric Ripert's his food hero after Top Chef and Bourdain, but I think it may be too much.
Thank you for any help.
What's your favorite thing to do with chevre?
A favorite of ours is to make a tomato sauce and grill some bread.
When it's ready, drop a few disks of goat cheese into the tomato sauce
and serve. The cheese melts nicely as the bread is dipped and mixed.
Fancy plates, Nashville?
Thanks for all the help, will check out each. He's definitely a fun kid.
Fancy plates, Nashville?
Hi,
My 9-year-old wants a birthday dinner that includes the kinds of plates he sees on TV. That is, large, generally white plates with food of a geometric or artistic construction. We live in Huntsville, AL., and Nashville seems the logical destination. I'm willing to make the trip, or to Atlanta, but would like to find a place that both leaves some money for the mortgage and doesn't scorn a 9-year-old in the dining party.
Any help would be genuinely appreciated.
Jaleo brunch?
Update. We were there Sunday the 15th. Were thrilled by piquillo pepper stew, chorizo, quail, manchego and apples, Sangria (sans sons), etc. Younger son, again don't ask, loved Scallops w/ romesco and berry dessert soup, older boy focused on quail and chorizo. Service, mood, all was great. I'm sure a detailed critique might note this or that, but for well out of norm family dining, it was quite perfect. Thanks for much help heading in.
Chicken boiled in white wine?
Remember some years ago, like pre-2000, a recipe from a mag that had us boil a chicken in white wine. Seemed like lots of olives involved, too. It was very good, can't find recipe or even similar hint, anyplace. May have imagined it, but my wife seems to recall as well. Help?
Jaleo brunch?
Hi,
Bringing family to DC in July. My sons are very interested in Jaleo, don't ask, and I was thinking Sunday brunch might be most friendly for a 9- and 16-year-old. I was wondering if the menu on Sundays is "just" brunch or if other tapas are available as well.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
