Costco food finds - 4th quarter 2012

Just discovered this and it was excellent. A great way to sneak vegetables that people don't think they like, into their diets. I'm going to have to stock up as this would make an excellent work lunch for me and I want to see how it turns out if I roat it and toss it with some bacon.

the Kansas City location has the better than bouillon back. I've been looking for it since last fall. They have the 16 oz organic lower sodium chicken version, for 6.79, which is about the same price as the non-organic, small size at the grocery store.

so I purchased three, since it doesn't seem to be a regular item.

Eggs? Kcmo

They are not with the other eggs but instead with the meat (chicken, beef, etc.). And I meant chickens who eat bugs!

Try Campo Lindo eggs, from Campo Lindo farm (local, free range, brown eggs who eat bugs). You can find them at the Cosentino's downtown, Hy-Vee in PV, Whole Foods (those are the three places I grab them).

Not new to Costco but new to us.

The Kirkland Super Premium Vanilla ice cream. Two half-gallons for about 10.00. So rich, dense, creamy and delicious that after we finish off the second half gallon it goes on our "only buy if we have guests in the house who can eat it all before we make pigs of ourselves" list. We finished off the first half-gallon in about 4 days. My husband swears this is the best vanilla ice cream he has ever had.

I've bought this in the Kansas City store as well and it is very good (and tart!)

We had the sausage with sauerkraut, pierogis, onions and mustard this weekend. Very tasty (and very quick for a weeknight meal). I separate the package into three smaller packages and freeze. Just pull out and thaw as needed.

Verdi Castelvetrano olives from Costco

Yes, I once watched a customer at WF pick out olives off the olive bar, with his fingers, from several containers. I also watched the owner at a local italian deli, pop olives into his mouth, from the bulk container, several times while waiting on my food there.

the one near me in KC (Italian deli) is still 8.99 a pound, so no savings there.

Verdi Castelvetrano olives from Costco

I've only gotten them from WF prior to finding them at Costco and I think the Costco version is better as these rest in the brine and buying from an olive bar means you don't get brine (usually) Ours taste the same as any others we've had. There is an expiration on all the packages we've purchased at Costco however, take a closer look at your package, I think the expiration date is very faint on the packaging.

Here in KC, we are down to a vew tubs of them and I'm afraid they won't replenish which is a shame since they are so good and so much less expensive than buying them at 9.99 a pound.

Kansas City (main street location)

Kiolbassa brand polish sausage, found in the meat/cheese section (non-frozen). This is the best polish sausage I've had and the only one I've liked. My husband loves it as well. About 10 large links for 9-10, just excellent and very nice looking when you cut into it.

Every checker who has checked me out (and the people checking your cart on the way out) has said "isn't that the best sausage" when they see it in my cart.

Also saw a jar of dark chocolate covered sea salt caramels, with the regular sea salt caramels, didn't buy (don't need another candy addiction). Less expensive than the milk chocolate kind but also appeared to be a smaller container.

El Pollo Rey KC KS

My husband does the same, Katie Nell. And if I take the dog with me when I go pick it up, I have to fight her off as she desperately tries to get in the front seat to get closer to it.

In fact, last summer when my nephew came to visit, he ate 4 pieces. He's 9 and my sister swears he doesn't eat chicken on the bone.

El Pollo Rey KC KS

Agree, best chicken ever and picking up two wholes tomorrow (about 24 bucks) as we will eat one whole chicken in one sitting. Tasty and delicious and smoky and when wrapped in those corn tortillas and drizzled with the provided salsa, excellent. And the pickled onions and carrots. I don't even like onions and I always eat them with the chicken.

A half is 6.50 I think while a whole is 12 or 12.50

KC - Best Italian Sausage?

Another vote for Scimeca's. They have it on sale at price chopper often and i stock up then. Never had the house-made at Cosentino's or Bichelmeyer, but Bichelmeyer does make a nice spicy polish sausage.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's - January thru June 2012 [OLD]

May have been noted previously but new to me is the discontinuation of chili spiced pineapple in the dried fruit aisle.

Back in stock in KC (main street) is the EV Tuscan olive oil from October/November 2011. This is the oil in the square green bottle for about 9.99 a liter (I think). They were out of the previous batch for a couple of months

Loved the chili spiced pineapple, only to learn today (from staff in store) that they discontinued it in November due to poor sales. Boo!

Hollow Chocolate ornaments (from France, bag of about 40 or so, very pretty) on sale at my Costco in KC (Main Street) for 1.97 a bag. That's down from 11.00 a bag before Christmas. The exp date is 1/2013. Brand is Cemoi.

Also found a collier's welsh cheddar for about 7.00 that is very good, but also very very sharp. My husband says it is the sharpest cheddar he has ever has.

I believe the toffee is with the plastic jarred candy and nuts in the regular section (in my store, it's on the row right in front of the registers). it should be where they keep the salted caramels, dried fruit/nut combos, jarred nuts, etc.

Verdi is the brand name. Be on the lookout for the squat rectangular clear plastic tub, in the refrigerated aisles (where they keep the cheeses, sliced meats, etc.) bearing the name Verdi Casteltrevano.

Yes, yes, yes. Kirkland (I think) chocolate salted caramels with sea salt. Found at main street store in Kansas City

Very large canister for about $8. These things are so ridiculously good that I'm having to limit myself to two per day (and hid them from my husband for about a week, he's found them now though). I think I'll buy another canister or two this weekend for future. Found them in the section of the store where they keep the nuts, bulk candy and snacks.

Made the bread. It was excellent. Hot, crispy outer crust, soft inside. One baguette is just right for two people (with a little bit left over for a sandwich tonight with some meats, olives and cheeses).

Kansas City (Main Street). Verdi Casteltrevano olives. approx $7 for a 32 oz package (drained weight 20.5 oz). they are pretty good and certainly as good as or better than the 9.99 a pound ones you can get from Whole Foods' olive bar. They are with the cheeses and meats.

Also purchased a five pack (10 loaves) of frozen Le Petit Francais baguettes. Pretty wholesome ingredients, from France. Have one in the oven now (defrost for 15 minutes and pop in 400 degree oven for 8-12 minutes).

Yasso Greek Yogurt bars. They are in the frozen section, near the ice cream. Come in a pack of 10 for about $10 bucks. Strawberry and blueberry flavors. Really good. purchased some yesterday. Let them soften for a few minutes and they are creamy dreamy. Only 70 calories, quite a bit of protein and low on carbs. Hope they keep selling them. they appear to be made by a company in Massachusetts so for th rest of us, it appears Costco is the only place to get them. Think it's what I'll have for breakfast in the mornings
