White Smoke Texas smokehouse - anyone been?
Or buy a Weber and devote a Saturday to smoking out your neighbors. That's my new plan.
White Smoke Texas smokehouse - anyone been?
I just read the Tokyo Food File's report on Vinatalia and I think I'm hooked. It looks like a nice place for a relaxed Valentines dinner.
White Smoke Texas smokehouse - anyone been?
I've heard good things about the burger as well, and one of my companions said the pulled pork was good. I had a relatively decent BBQ pork sando at Bubby's NY Diner in Sakuragicho the other day, although it was a little small.
The chicken wings weren't on the menu, but my companion said they ordered last time and each order is just 3 drummettes. He said they tasted good, but didn't succeed on a taste/cost ratio.

I have to agree with the brisket's dryness. I went today for lunch and had the brisket sandwich with an additional 50g of meat for an extra 250jpy. For a sandwich costing 1850, I was expecting something better.
The bacon wasn't on the menu, but a dining companion got the pork and beans and it was good - but not very smokey.

I had plans to go yesterday for lunch but they fell through. I've heard very good things from Americans however.
The brisket sandwich seems to be a winner, as well as the baked potato covered in brisket and chili. I'm looking forward to checking myself soon.
Hayama and surrounds?
Thanks for the ringing endorsement, I'm definitely going to check it out soon in the new year.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi - the movie.
Did you think the movie pushes people to visit his son more so than the old man?

What say everyone?
Hayama and surrounds?
Wait, really? I've been wrong about this for years now!
On topic, when I move back in late december I'll be living in Zushi and I hope to try out some local spots and I'll try to write up anything delicious.
Hello Cafe is gone!!!!
I think it's still there, just looks Vietnamese from the outside. I got takeout last week.
Same shopping center as Ba Le Bakery right?
First Trip to Paesano's
I like the Paesano better than the Arista. I think the Arista can get a bit salty and I absolutely adore fried eggs on my sandwiches
Black Cod in Tokyo?
That's sad news, I'll keep a flame of hope alive for a little while.
Cooking at home
They sell such things at most of the big electronics stores. I used to have a great one with a broiler and steam convection - I think it cost about 280US at Bic Camera. You can do it cheaper though, possibly in the 175-200 range.
Chinese beef tripe soup at Dim Sum
Sunday only and good dim sum on Washington Ave? Sounds good to me. I'll might just go on the 13th.
RAMEN in Old City! Monday night only. Who is going to Khyber's Japanese night?
Will do, I live pretty close to Izumi.
Ippudo in Japan is pretty good, not great but still very good. Next time I'm in NYC I'll try to get there.
RAMEN in Old City! Monday night only. Who is going to Khyber's Japanese night?
Morimoto's ramen is terrible. The broth is nothing like a real tonkotsu ramen, there's no thickness or collagen and furthermore it's bland and lacking seasoning. The noodles are nothing special either. It's bargain basement broth by Japanese standards.
I haven't tried the other places yet, but I hope something good shows up. The word in the Japanese community here is that the owner of Yakitori Boy is opening (or planning to open) a ramen shop somewhere on South St. I'll let you guys know what happens if I hear more.

You're probably correct, I have a nice picture of the pot but unfortunately that's all I can remember now. Next time in Japan will be late December of this year, far off but I'm already looking forward to it.
RAMEN in Old City! Monday night only. Who is going to Khyber's Japanese night?
I'm with you on that, to have real ramen somewhere in the city would make me very happy.

Well, what did everyone think?
I was there at 4:45, got a table and promptly waited about an hour for the ramen. The kakuni sando took about 45min and the incredibly tiny mentaiko meshi took a long time too.
The taste was good overall, but my bowl of ramen was missing ingredients that the other bowls had. I realized it only after finishing off another's bowl and I told the waiter, he thanked me for my input. You'd think that after an hour wait and serving me a mistake, someone should offer an apology at least?
Oh well, at least I got to eat. My friends arrived at 6, were told a 3hr wait and then at 9 were told that everything was sold out. Ouch!

I'm with you on the ebi-imo, it's one of the highlights that I remember from my meal there. That and the tea or desert at the end, one of those was tasty.
Hot peppers in Tokyo?
Try D2 or another 'home center' and check out the available seeds. I think you can get habanero seeds there but I could be wrong.
Monsu-A report
Thanks mr cheesemonger, do you know when the official opening is? Parking isn't going to be an issue for me!
Han Dynasty
Great review Seeker and Tir na nog. I'm sad that I couldn't make it, it sounds like a great time. I'll make sure to try the Dynasty soon.
30th birthday dinner. Le bec fin or somewhere else?
Thanks, lacroix sounds good. I like the idea of a tasting menu.
30th birthday dinner. Le bec fin or somewhere else?
I'm trying to plan a small dinner for 4 in early February. my first thought was to get to LeBecFin before it closed but I realized some actual thought should be in order. I'm looking for a nicer meal, so no matter how good pho 75 is, I'd like something fancier.
does anyone have some good ideas? I'm looking at Vetri already. please no garces places, I've had terrible service at two of them and don't fancy taking any chances on this meal.
anything I've overlooked? Bibou is another option (close to boot) but a place with a slightly larger menu would be better for this group.
Not able to obtain reservations at Fuku! What should I do?
You could always call Fuku the day before you'd like to go, ask if you can sit at the bar early in the night. If you promise to get out early, they may have room for you.
Best Bahn Mi?
I decided to make the drive out to Oregon to give Viet French a try. They do have 20 kinds of banh mi, but I just didn't like the bread.
It's a nice change of pace from the places on Washington, and I really like the variety but I prefer Ba Le Bakery and the place on 8th, just North of Washington whose name escapes me right at the moment.
Choosing an apartment based on food
Zombie thread.
Thanks for all the recommendations everyone, I ended up in South Philly by the Italian Market. It's wonderful having that for weekly shopping. Also, the proximity to cheap mexican and vietnamese is a godsend for when I'm too tired to cook. A 5min walk provides TONS of options from pho/banh mi to tacos to Cosmi's deli. It's wonderful.
