"Cooking Block" What Do You Do?

Thanks! I also belong to a What's for Dinner page on FB. Part of the problem now that I am thinking about it... My DH gave up dairy, and fried food, eats seafood, no meat or chicken, the kids eat some seafood, like dairy and meat. Nothing is simple, always a challenge to satisfy all.

"Cooking Block" What Do You Do?

Like "writers block" I think I have "cooking block". I'm a decent home cook, but lately for the past few months, I've lost the savoir faire I used to have when it came to whipping up a tasty meal. I just flounder around the kitchen, Can't think of what to cook, and get very flustered. Anyone else experience this? I need a remedy!

How to eat Hainanese chicken rice

Would you share your recipe on home cooking page? Or post a link to a good rendition? I've only had it when dining out but would love to make at home.

Golden Corral coming soon in Freehold

I agree with what you saying but it's not the point I am trying to make. Have you ever eaten something that may not have been the best quality but enjoyed it just the same? My favorite fast food is a jack in the box taco. It's a good thing there aren't any nearby, I'd be in trouble. Are they good food? No but I would drive a good distance to have one. The GC I went to had decent fried chicken and really good fried chicken livers. Id love to have them along with an ayce salad bar (providing it was clean and we'll managed)

There is an entire section devoted to Chains on Chowhound. It's all about finding something you like and really enjoy. If they had something I really enjoyed at this GC you bet I'd be there in a heartbeat regardless if 80% is not up to snuff. I haven't been there, but I'm willing to give it a shot to find out.

I haven't been to this GC, but I have found things I enjoyed even though they are not "good cuisine" at the one in Royal Palm FL.

Sometimes eating these things is like jumping into a cold pool. You just gotta do, it and can't think about what you are doing. I read some bad reviews about the slider, perhaps I just got lucky. I'm going to have to jump in one more time to be sure.

Rockland County Happy Hours

I remember looking into it, but I don't think they have the special prices as good as CF, I found the link for theirs. Not too bad, but not nearly as much to choose from. https://www.bonefishgrill.com/content....

White Castle's Sriracha Chicken Sliders and Crispy Jalapeno Cheese Fries.

Had one yesterday, and it was pretty tasty for a joint like White Castle. If you put them on a plate and served them at say the Cheesecake Factory, one would never know they were made at White Castle. Good amount of spice, the jalapeno cheese adds another kick. Worth the purchase if you are at a W.C.

Rockland County Happy Hours

This is an offshoot of a discussion that began on the Where to Eat in the Palisades Mall Thread. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/349994 There are a few places in the mall that have decent happy hours, most notably, the Cheesecake Factory. From 4-6 there are a few specialty cocktails, wine and beer $5.00 each. They are the same drinks one usually pays 12+ for. They have a selection of apps, full size for $5 each. Pretty good deal. Looking for others in Rockland.

Where do you eat at the Palisades Mall?

We've only been to the ones in the mall. Well, Baily's has a happy hour, they just put out a tray, usually wings or mozzarella sticks, and drinks are a bit reduced. Nothing to go out of the mall for. I'd love to know some other good ones too. Let's start a new thread!

We went back to happy hour again last night at the Cheesecake Factory. Once again it was a great deal.

I have fear of Spam. Spamophobia. Is it anything like Taylor Ham? It looks a bit like it, just that it comes in a can. I lover Taylor Ham.

A new restaurant is coming to the mall:

Also if you haven't tried the Happy Hour at The Cheesecake Factory give it a go. It's a great deal. $5.00 cocktails, $4.00 beer, and full size appetizers, only $5.00! Best H.H. deal in the mall IMHO. I do like the Yard Houses deal, but the CCF has better appetizers, and better drinks.

You Know It Isn't "Good Cuisine" But You Like It Just the Same, So There!

There's a discussion on a local board about Golden Corral, and how bad the food is, teetering towards, "if you eat there the you possibly can't know anything about good food". I beg to differ, I find a few items I actually have enjoyed at the one location I've visited. I also love Jack In The Box Tacos, and White Castle Hamburgers. On the flip side, my favorite lunchtime restaurant near where I work is French, Balthazar in Soho, or near where I live O'lar in Piermont, both of those are on near the other end of the food chain spectrum, not a Per Se, of French Laundry but far enough up to get the point. What does this all mean? I don't know, but I have seen this attitude over the years on CH bubble up once in awhile. It's kind of frustrating, reminds me of being in High School where the "Cool" kids would pick on those they deemed not so "cool". Have you been ridiculed for a food choice? What was it? I just have to say, I know it isn't "great cuisine" I like it just the same, so there!

Golden Corral coming soon in Freehold

Not sure I am explaining this well, but you can't go in with high expectations. It is what it is. It doesn't mean that those who go, don't know anything about great food. Trust me, I frequent high end NYC restaurants regularly and know good from bad. Most folks on CH also know the difference between great cuisine and Golden Corral food. I would never go to GC often, but once in awhile it's a fun experience. Along with the not so good, there are usually a few pretty good items available,+ the kids really enjoy it. I have not been to the one if Freehold yet, but the one in FL has the best fried chicken livers, I'd just for them. The fried chicken is also usually pretty good. It's a complete 180 from the dining experiences I know are considered great. It's just something I find fun to do once in a blue moon.

Marlboro Man - what time did you get there? What do you think is a good time so we don't end up waiting in a huge line? I've only been to the GC in Royal Palm Beach FL, and their lunch differs from their dinner, for a few items. Wondering if anyone can report back on how the Freehold location differs.

I took everyone's advice and used sushi rice. Came out good, not perfect. I am just a poor rice cooker, I need to buy a real rice cooker!
