followed by your post. Hope it helps!

Not-to-be-missed Restaurants in Ottawa

Sorry you've had so few replies. Ottawa is not very active on the Ontario board, so I'll try to fill in with some of my favourites:
Good thai can be found in many parts of town - Thai Lanna in southern Ottawa, Ban Thai in Centrepointe, Pookie's Thai in west end are all good, Som Tum downtown are just a few.
Chinese - the best are in Chinatown, but fantastic open-ended egg rolls are only to be found at the Golden Palace, on Carling near Woodroffe. Their food is not great (although some fans of 50's-style Chinese like it), but their eggrolls cannot be beat. Lots of good mom & pop Chinese restaurants around. We like Ho Ho's on Richmond east of Woodroffe.
Italian - I like Caffé Mio on Wellington, and sometimes Fratelli on bank in the Glebe. Lots of other good choices on Preston Street.
Pizza - the Colonnade downtown is the best. Many Toronto posters wax nostalgic about how good their pizza is.
French - my favourite is Le Panaché in Gatineau (Hull).
Others we like that defy categorization - Zuni Grill, Savana Café, Arome Meze, Fraser Café, Four Cuisines Bistro, Village Café. There's lots more, but I'm running out of tiime. That should do you for a start, anyway!

Laloux, Jolifou, or Les Heritiers?

Thanks Everybody! You really helped me make this decision - it's like having very articulate foodie friends in Montreal - and I now have a reservation at Laloux. Hope to try the others on another visit to Mtl.

A relative newcomer and of my favourites, for really good food at very reasonable prices, is Four Cuisines (http://www.fourcuisinesbistro.com/). I hesitated to write about it, simply because I don't want it to become even harder to get a reservation. It's quite tiny, and, despite it's small number of tables, can get noisy when full.

Ottawa near Radisson

Not too far to walk, always tasty, and interesting atmosphere is Savana Cafe (http://www.savanacafe.com/) on Gilmour near Kent.

Lunch in Ottawa (Nepean Barrhaven area)

One possibility very close by is Fiamma (http://www.fiamma.ca/Fiamma.htm). A bit further away, is West End Station in Bells Corners (http://www.westendstation.ca/). In the other direction, but still west end, are numerous restaurants in Westboro. Among my favourites for lunch are Caffé Mio (www.caffemio.ca)
and the Village Café (www.thevillagecafe.net), but there are many more. Caffé Mio and West End Station both have outdoor patios, for lunch in nice weather. Hope this helps.

Laloux, Jolifou, or Les Heritiers?

Thanks Shopgirl. That addition (not so quiet on a Saturday night) is pretty important to us, and I appreciate that you thought to add it. My best to your mom, too - she sounds like quite the trouper.

Laloux, Jolifou, or Les Heritiers?

Thanks Carswell. Someone just mentioned to me that Le Pegase might fill the bill better than any of these three. At the risk of further confusing myself with additional choices, what do you think of that idea?

Laloux, Jolifou, or Les Heritiers?

I'm looking for a restaurant in Montreal where I can take my father to dinner for his 98th birthday (yes, 98!). It should be attractive and reasonably quiet, with good service and great food, and be less expensive than something like Toqué, say 40-50pp before wine and tip.

Since I live in Ottawa, I'm mostly going by reviews I find on the web, and have narrowed down to the three listed above. I'd love to know if these three really do fit the bill, and which one would be best for the occasion.

Ottawan seeking restaurant for small dinner party in or near Outremont

Just wanted to let you all know how our dinner party at Byblos went. I held it on a Sunday night, so we could have their special "Dizzy."

Despite finding the owner somewhat difficult to deal with over the phone from Ottawa, in person both she and her husband are a delight. They were warm and helpful, entertaining even, and made a nice fuss over my 97-year-old Dad. It did take some gentle arm-twisting to get them to give us tables along the window - necessary given the 30-degree heat in Montreal this past weekend and no A/C - which they originally did not want to give to a group.

The meal itself was a treat. We started with a selection of Iranian appetizers, chosen by the woman - truly delicious and most unusual tasting, with each one distinctly different. Next came the dizzy, which comes in both vegetarian and lamb versions. Beautifully served on pottery dishes, helpfully explained by the man (this is where the entertainment comes in), and delicious to eat. We concluded with a small selection of Iranian desserts to share around, again tasty and unusual.

I really enjoyed the whole experience, and I think my guests did too, although they wouldn't have said if they didn't (too bad really, because I'd love to know what the group of mostly very seniors really thought). With food as described, a bottle of bubbly (Cordonui), and 2 liters of house wine, the bill came to $280 for 9 of us.

Dinner near Fairmont Château Laurier, Ottawa, ON

and lunch at the café in the large glass-domed space in the National Gallery is also very nice. Small but tasty menu, excellent service, and a view over the river that can't be beat.

For lunch or dinner on a warm summer evening, any of the restaurants that share the patio behind Social, which is on Sussex quite close to their hotel, would be very nice. There are 4 restaurants there, it's a pretty courtyard, and one can just check the menus and make a choice of which resto to eat at.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Unfortunately, John Company is hosting a wedding party the evening in question, and Bistro Justine is closed on Sundays. I've decided to try Byblos - their Sunday night "Dizzy" sounds interesting, and my seniors are quite an adventurous lot! I'll let you know how it goes.

Ottawan seeking restaurant for small dinner party in or near Outremont

This is my second try. My apologies for re-posting, but I am desperate for some suggestions and didn't get any responses to my last post.

I live in Ottawa, and need to host a small dinner party at a restaurant in Montreal. I'm looking for a a place in Outremont or not too far away, for a party of about 10 people. It's a bit tricky - some don't eat fish or seafood, some don't eat meat, some don't eat spicy food, and some love just those things! Also, since some guests are hearing aid wearers, the restaurant shouldn't be very noisy. I would like to spend between $10-15 per person (excluding beverages), and am open to restaurant suggestions of any ethnicity that might be able to provide for our mixed requirements, as long as they're reasonably attractive for a birthday celebration for a 97-year-old.

I hope this brings some help.
