Taro omakase a disgrace

My husband and I have been passionate about the omakase at Taro sushi for years. We love to eat this way: at the sushi bar, in front of the chef, piece by piece, leisurely pace, anticipation before the arrival of every piece. We hadn't been in about two months and were so excited to be there last Friday night. What a disgrace! I guess in an attempt to facilitate the fact that everyone at the bar had ordered omakase, or maybe to hurry us out for another seating (although there was no line when we left) we were all served two "normal" courses (single pieces) and then two long plates with six pieces each on them. I wanted to tell the chef that if I had felt like ordering the sushi combination plate I would have done that. We were so pissed. It really seemed like cheating. Two at a time ok, but six?! We might give it one more try on a weeknight but if he does that again it's over for us.

Fresh fish at the Sunday 5th Ave Greenmarket in Park Slope!

I'm so psyched, the 5th Avenue Sunday greenmarket in Park Slope is getting its own fish stand starting at the end of June!! The fisherman is a local brooklyn guy and he's planning to bring striped bass, bluefish, blackfish, crabs, eel, fluke and flounder (in season). He's also smoking some fish and making pates. Finally!!

Anyone tried Mura in Park Slope?

We were there last week and then had take out. We tried the spicy tuna, shrimp tempura roll, "I Love Eel", and the appetizer roll with cucumber mentioned below. Everything was fresh and well prepared (the tempura had clearly been fried to order and was grease-less). It's no Taro, but it's infinitely better than Kiku and probably a step or so above Yamato. I wish their special rolls were simpler though - I personally don't like more than one type of fish in a roll - but that's just me.

Best Brooklyn Lox

Yes!! Yes!! There is a FABULOUS Jewish appetizing store on 16th Ave and 49th street called Schwartz's. Don't expect them to be too friendly, but I've had the herring there, the whitefish salad, the baked salmon salad and the sable. I can't personally vouch for the lox, but this is definitely the place to get it. While you're there also walk a few blocks to 47th Street, there is a bakery called Schick's and on Thursdays and Fridays they make the most incredible challah I've ever had in my life.

Great salads in Park Slope

The goat cheese salad at Colson's on 6th Ave/9th St is AWESOME. It's $9.50 and comes with three large breaded/fried goat cheese discs and a basket of their yummy breads.

GREEK RESTAURANT IN BROOKLYN

Agnanti in Bay Ridge is wonderful and inexpensive. Try the house special rooster with pasta (I think it was at the top of the menu somewhere...), it was absolutely heavenly.

Still can't open the link, can you help? Thanks.

Foods I can't live without from the Red Hook Fairway

1. Wallaby yogurt. God, these yogurts are so good and come in such unbelievable flavors - mango lime, orange passionfruit, even the lemon is devine.

2. Abba herring. Right accross from the smoked fish counter, I've tried all the variations and have concluded that the "traditional marinade" is my favorite. It's so good I can eat half of it right out of the jar before I even get to the table.

3. Fairway brand Kalamata olive oil. So tasty, such a good deal.

4. Local Red Jacket Orchards apricots. Better than any I've had and so freaking gorgeous to look at.

5. Jules Destrooper Butter Almond Cookies. Crispy, buttery and seven is the official serving!

6. I'm really not a prepared food person but the baked and breaded chicken cutlets with dried cranberries and pecans are totally addictive.

7. Elite Mulberry juice. Watered down a bit and over ice, ahhh.

8. Japanese "Spicy Sauce". You know that orange-ish mayo that all those spicy tuna rolls contain? I think it's so hilarious that Fairway sells it in little containers but I love it and I dip everything into it.

9. Recently, the lobster rolls on the cafe menu. No, it's not the best lobster roll in recorded history, but for nine bucks including olive oil chips and good cole slaw, sitting out back watching the boats go by, I am entirely happy.

10. Saba. Love it with gorgonzola and also chunks of parmigiano.

No one can talk cheese or slice smoked salmon like Blue Apron and so it shall always be for me, but my list of Fairway addictions is growing.

Anyone want to add on?

Bar B Q South Slope - I am sorry for hating your guts - I was wrong

One additional complaint: they don't deliver and when we call to ask this question every couple of months they are unbearably rude on the phone, as if the very idea offended them. Sometimes we suck it up and order for pick-up, sometimes we slam the phone down in frustration. But I do love their pulled pork and cole slaw.

Lobster Rolls ?

Nick's Lobster on Flatbush does serve lobster rolls but they are V-I-L-E. They're on smushed hamburger buns, contain about 70% weird "crab" stuffing and then about two dismal pieces of lobster, all broiled together disturbingly.

new place on Sixth Avenue, Park Slope

It's called Red Horse and it's a coffee "lounge" for lack of a better term. They have sweets from Baked in Red Hook and some pre-made sandwiches. It's comfortable inside with couches and tables and the owners (who are local) are very sweet.

One Girl Cookies - Cobble Hill, Brooklyn

I totally agree, their cookies are just perfect. I find Baked (Red Hook) cookies not only ubiquitous in Brooklyn these days, but wayyyy too sweet. One Girl mocha cookies and the chocolate/caramel/shortbread are my absolute favorites. Also love the little orange ones.

Israeli Schnitzel place on Coney Island Avenue?

Passed it last night, what's the deal? Has anyone been?

GREAT dinner at Bahar - Afghani on CIA

Very little has been discussed about Bahar on this board, but we took the kids here tonight and were absolutely blown away.
To start we had the fried pumpkin dumplings - crisp and light.
Entrees: Lamb Biryani and Narange Pulow (spelling?) the latter is a saffron rice with almonds, candied orange peel, carrots and chunks of fabulous grilled lamb. I have had versions of this elsewhere and this was really excellent. Lamb Biryani was slightly spicy with tender lamb and onions. Also had a mixed kebab with lamb chops and tandoori chicken with carrots and raisins - the chicken was amazing but the lamb was overcooked. Next time tandoori chicken only. Also shared a vegetable combo with eggplant, spinach and okra - all distinctly flavored, all yummy. We were two adults and two small children, and the whole bill was under $60 with tip and we had enough food for at least four adults.
Go! It's worth the trip!
