Tell me about your home water filtration/softener/purification system, please
We have the same system - 12 years, no problems with one annual maintenance visit. Two nice features: it is not electric (powered by water flow) and there is no timer to schedule flushes (based on consumption so it flushes as needed). Our water tastes fine - the unfiltered water will turn anything orange in a matter of minutes!
Best Cheap Beer
Ah, If only Nat Boh was avaiable everywhere! If you can't get it, I have seconded the vote for PBR...I think there are very similar.
Eats between Baltimore and Philly
Wilmington has quite a selection of small family owned restaurants, many are close to I-95...your choice might depend on which meal or style of food. If I wanted to stop for coffee, I would probably get off I-95 at exit 100 (Northeast, MD) and head east (or 100A if heading south), there is a restaurant on your left at the first light...not much character, but good coffee. Or you could continue for about a mile and you'll be in the center of Northest where you'll find a few places for coffee.
hot wings in delware
Dreamers Cafe on Philadelphia Pike in Wilmington has quite a selection from mild to very hot. And the best thing is, the guy is a genius with hot peppers. The very hot wings are not just a bunch of extra wing sauce with so much vinegar you can't breathe around them (I hate that!). He actually has flavors where you can taste the peppers, get the heat and still taste the chicken! My personal favorite is the #6's.
Best Dinner in Philadelphia?
No one mentioned La Famiglia yet - unbelievable!!!

Look at the history page.
chow along I-95 between Cranbury, NJ and Baltimore
Just before the Delaware Memorial Bridge in NJ at the end of either the Turnpike or I-295, Follow Rt. 49 into Pennsville about a mile, turn right on Main Street at the flashing yellow light and head toward the river to the Riverview Inn for luch or dinner. They have a deck which should be open later this month. Don't be tempted by the Cracker Barrell or Applebys!!!
About 10 miles into Maryland, off I-95 about 2 miles is Northeast, MD...kinda touristy...but there's a good seafood place right on the main drag called Woodies and a few other places within a few blocks.
Wilmington DE Good Italian Recs
A second vote for Attilio's...definately my favorite Italian in Wilmington.
Italian in Delaware
You can't beat Attilio's in Wilmington...1900 Lancaster. Homemade pasta. Treat yourself to an order of fried peppers - they're like candy!
Restaurant Recommendations Lunch Glassboro NJ
Halfway between Glassboro and Mullica Hill (off Rt 322, just after Rt. 55, turn right on Lambs Road to next stop sign) is JG Cooks Carolina Blue Smoke House. They completely renovated the restaurant a year ago and brought in a huge smoker - that's right, real smoked meat. They also cater to the discerning beer palate with a very unique selection of brews. I think I've tried just about everything on the menu - you can't go wrong. One hint: ask for extra sauce on the side.
South Jersey Shore- Margate, Longport etc..- open during off season
Try the Tuckahoe Inn, just across the 34th Street bridge to Rt 9, turn right and follow to the closed bridge. www.tuckahoeinn.com
The love of hot sauce and all things spicy
It seems I spice up everything, but it has to have a balance of taste and heat. For example, habeneros have great heat, but I don't care for the taste. I prefer jalepenos, crushed red goes into just about everything...a little cayenne, some black...you can get the heat to kick in early or after a bite or two...hot lips or hot mouth. Fridge is full of hot sauces and I love cherry peppers straight. One peeve is when you order extra hot wings and all they do is pour so much wing sauce on that the vingar almost chokes you but the heat is the same.
St. Michaels on the Chesapeake...
Although not in St. Michaels, I like the Harris Crab House...Kent Narrows, I think. And it's right next door to the infamous Red Eye Dock Bar.
Great Grilling
What do you throw on the grill when you want something different than the normal staples?
Everybody loves my wings and ribs - but I want to plate up something a little different.
Baltimore Sour Beef [Moved from Washington DC/Baltimore Area board]
I need some recipe help. I grew up in Baltimore and remember my grandmother's Sunday dinner of sour beef...delicious! Oddly, I have never made it myself so I don't have a recipe. Got a craving this morning to make it. I know it is a version of saurbraten but different. Anybody have a real Baltimore recipe for sour beef? Thanks.
Marsala wine question
If it smells good and looks good (clear), I would still use it. As for sweet vs. dry - use whatever gives the taste you're after, or what the recipe calls for. Think about it, you can cook with almost any wine...or beer or spirits, for that matter.
Stainless Steel Kitchen Island/Counter? [Moved from NAF board]
I just realized that's the exact table you mentioned - duh - the other suggestion would be to have a cabinet shop make a top for you, perhaps thin stainless over plywood (less expensive) with a nice edge, and buy two table bases (pedestal) to attach to the top. You could try any local kitchen cabinet shop and ask if they've worked with stainless.
Stainless Steel Kitchen Island/Counter? [Moved from NAF board]
I think you'll find that the bottom shelf is needed for leg support unless you go with something like the first table listed here: http://www.stainlesssteelstore.com/stainless-steel-tables-sstop.html
Brussel Sprout recipe?
When I roast them, I cut them in half. Try throwing in a little garlic and a few other veggies wouldn't hurt - a quartered onion, mushrooms, parsnips, even broccoli and cauliflower - a roasted medley.
How best to reheat my wings?
Since it is a cookout, why not put them on the grill - top rack, low heat for a few minutes. Otherwise use the oven, anywhere from 275 - 325 will work, do not cover.
Help with Crockpot Pork Roast
Thanks - you melted my brain freeze!!! The brown sugar idea is just what I was looking for.
Help with Crockpot Pork Roast
At noon today I'm putting a pork loin sirloin roast in the crockpot for a birthday dinner tonight and I need some recipe suggestions...my usual approach of au jus, spices and veggies seems boring today.
The rest of the meal, as requested, is salad, steamed broc and cauliflower, green bean casserole and mashed potatoes.
I only have about 20 minutes to do the crockpot prep.
Home made chicken stock
A recent thread on chicken stock had lots of good ideas, including a crock pot overnight. Do a search for more ideas. But yes, it's easy and no problem!
Peanutbutter & Turkey Sandwiches -- ideas?
Once you've had asian peanut sauce, you realize that peanut butter is just as savory as sweet...I haven't tried it on fish yet, but wouldn't hesitate with shrimp!
Alternative to Cheese on Pizza?
I have often eaten cheeseless pizza - just tomato sauce and a topping like mushrooms and green peppers...never bothered with a substitute for the cheese.
Crab apple and chili jelly
OK - you got cheese and crackers as a before meal item. Mix with a little evoo and apple cider vinegar with the jelly for salad dressing. Then you have a glazed meat for the main dish. Then...are you ready...serve a spoonful of the jelly on top of vanilla ice cream with a drizzle of chocolate. You might need more than one jar!
Food Kent Island, Maryland?
A little late in the season...but let the crab war begin: Harris Crab House.
Chef treating you to dinner - how much to tip?
I do the exact same thing with the same logic...I'm trying to do something nice for the owner - boosting the morale of his staff - as a thank-you for the free meal.
