Mail Order Hatch Chilies?

I'm thinking about buying some frozen Hatch green chilies to use in cooking. Any recommendations or experience, good or bad, with any of the various on-line vendors? TIA hounds.

Best Fried Chicken

Agree completely. It think it's double fried, and boy is it good.

Thanksgiving for the Lazy

Any places around town that make particularly noteworthy items for the Thanksgiving table? Great pumpkin or pecan pie? Excellent side dishes? I don't mind doing the turkey and stuffing, but I just can't muster the energy to populate the entire table. All my guests are from out of town, so my usual potluck approach doesn't work.

ISO Fresh Porcini Mushrooms

Thanks OC. I like dried porcinis better for things like soups and sauces, but fresh ones, sauteed in butter or olive oil, and served over a couple of fresh scrambled eggs, are really something special.

ISO Fresh Porcini Mushrooms

Found some a couple of weeks back at the Whole Foods on Alewife Parkway in Cambridge, but wonder if there is a more reliable source. Any suggestions?

Imported Indian Mangos?

Anyone know if there are Indian or other grocery stores in the greater Boston area that sell fresh mangos imported from India? I think the season has started, and I would love to find a reliable source. TIA.

Backbay/Southend Chinese?

Any decent Chinese take out in the Backbay or the Southend? Doesn't need to be super-authentic or regional, just tasty.

ISO Great Indian

Tried this place on Friday and was really impressed. Great eggplant bharta, and everything else we ordered was excellent as well. Thanks for the recommendation.

Looking for a Good Burger & Scotch

Agree that Craigie makes a great burger, and has a pretty good selection of whiskeys.

ISO Great Indian

Moved to the South End from Los Angeles a couple of years ago, and one of the things I haven't yet found is Indian to replace my favorites in LA. Looked around the board, and it seemed like many of the inquiries on this topic were a bit dated, so figured it was worth re-asking. What are the favorites in and around town?

And on a slightly related topic, are there any grocery stores around that sell imported Indian mangos?

Salted Caramels

Agree. Red Kite salted caramels are excellent.

Does any place in Boston make a killer roast lamb and feta sandwich?

There's a place in Los Angeles (Papa Cristo's) that makes a great lamb and feta sandwich, but Boston has to have LA beat in terms of Greek food, no? (Photo here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scottlow... ) Where should I go to scratch this itch?

Champurrado

Any place around Boston make a decent champurrado? (Moved here from LA a couple of years ago, and this is one of the things I've been missing lately.)

Is there anyplace like Russ & Daughters in Boston?

For those who are unfamiliar, Russ & Daughters is a shop in Manhattan that, among other things, makes phenomenally good lox, cream cheese, and bagel sandwiches. A couple of years ago, on a visit, I had a toasted everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and hand-sliced Nova lox, and that damn sandwich is currently haunting my dreams. Anyplace in greater Boston where I can hope to replicate the experience, or do I need to get on the train south?

ISO Wor Wonton Soup

For some reason, I crave this whenever I have a cold. Any leads as to who has a good version? Looking for a nice clean broth with a good mix of vegetables, shrimp, wontons, and roast pork slices. The Back Bay or South End would be a plus, but willing to travel if necessary.

Local Source for Great City Ham

I've been buying ham from the Butcher Ship on Tremont, and it's great stuff, but lately, the availability has been spotty. Are there other good sources for high quality city ham around? Looking for something to use in soups, not country ham or prosciutto type product.

what are your 10 favorite cheap(less that $10) breakfast, lunch, dinner and "4th meal/snack" places

Tried Taqueria El Amigo in Waltham today, and thank you for the recommendation! This is the first Mexican restaurant I've been to in Boston that, if you magically transported it to East Los Angeles, would not immediately go bankrupt.

what are your 10 favorite cheap(less that $10) breakfast, lunch, dinner and "4th meal/snack" places

Having moved here from LA a bit over a year ago, I would respectfully suggest that you are unlikely to find inexpensive Mexican fare here that will impress you. On the other hand, Italian, Portuguese, and American diner food are much better here than in LA.

Picco ( http://www.piccorestaurant.com/ ) in the South End is closer to $20 than to $10, but their pizza is superb; reminds me of Mozza in LA but without the pretense and the need to get a reservation a month in advance.

Another of my favorites is Charlies Sandwich Shoppe, also in the South End. It's a little dive diner, breakfast and lunch only, with a freekin' James Beard award. Great breakfasts (tomato and cheese omelet, or hash) and wonderful lunches (meatloaf sandwich TDF). Easily under $10, but don't even think about going on a weekend unless you're very patient.

Gourmet Dumpling House ( http://www.gourmetdumpling.com/ ) in China Town (Szechuan sliced fish) is very good. Should be close to $10, maybe a bit over.

Sam LaGrassa's ( http://www.samlagrassas.com/ ) in the hub has a chipotle pastrami sandwich that rivals Langer's for deliciousness. Lunch during the week only, I think.

Hope you enjoy your stay!

SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN

Agree completely. I like shopping at WF, but I avoid their prepared foods which are virtually always under-seasoned and not worth eating.

ISO Boston Source for Santander 70% Chocolate

Anyone know someplace local that carries Santander dark chocolate?

Popular Plates --Anyone subscribe?

I thought this was the best food-related magazine I had seen in years. Very sorry it appears to have disappeared.

Boston area breakfast recap

Notwithstanding the use of the word "shoppe" which is generally disqualifying for me, I'm a huge fan of Charlies Sandwich Shoppe in the South End. Impossible on weekends, but not bad if you go early on a weekday. Their tomato and cheese omelette (home-fries extra crisply) is the stuff of dreams.

Boston area breakfast recap

Hands down, the best Cream of Wheat I have ever tasted. Prior to this, I wouldn't have believed it was possible to make Cream of Wheat taste that good.

ISO Great Boston Doughnuts

I've been getting pastries once a week for my office from Flour, but am kind of feeling like changing things up. Any great doughnut places in the city? South End or Backbay would be particularly convenient, but not required.

McCann's Steel Cut Oats Recipe

One final variation on this recipe that's perhaps worth posting. If you like creamy oatmeal, you can double the initial dose of water, and instead of leaving the oatmeal on the stove top over night, put it in the oven set to 190 F. Otherwise prepare as above. The resulting oatmeal will have almost none of the usual steel cut oatmeal texture, but will be very, very creamy. Like oatmeal pudding.

Who makes the best french fries in Boston?

I'm looking for a Boston version of NY's Balthazar, if that's any help. Crisp on the outside, light and fluffy inside, freshly made, piping hot and perfectly seasoned. Does any place in town hit this dish out of the park?

Thanksgiving Takeout near Hanover?

I thought about the Coop, which is an absolutely fantastic market, but most of the time their prepared foods taste kind of bland to me. I think they try to avoid using salt or something.

Thanksgiving Takeout near Hanover?

Just can't muster the energy to cook this year, but would love to have a good Thanksgiving dinner at home (Lyme, NH). Any suggestions for takeout turkey and fixings within 60 minutes drive of say, Hanover, NH?

Boston Espresso

Thank you! That is very exciting. Render looks to be just a couple of blocks from my house, and I will definitely be checking it out.

ISO Thanksgiving To Go?

Is there anyplace in the greater Boston area that does a great Thanksgiving to go? Looking for superb turkey, sides and a great pie (pumpkin or pecan), preferably all from a single source, but I'd be willing to make a couple of stops if that's what it takes. Any suggestions?
