SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN

Agree completely. I like shopping at WF, but I avoid their prepared foods which are virtually always under-seasoned and not worth eating.

ISO Boston Source for Santander 70% Chocolate

Anyone know someplace local that carries Santander dark chocolate?

Popular Plates --Anyone subscribe?

I thought this was the best food-related magazine I had seen in years. Very sorry it appears to have disappeared.

Boston area breakfast recap

Notwithstanding the use of the word "shoppe" which is generally disqualifying for me, I'm a huge fan of Charlies Sandwich Shoppe in the South End. Impossible on weekends, but not bad if you go early on a weekday. Their tomato and cheese omelette (home-fries extra crisply) is the stuff of dreams.

Boston area breakfast recap

Hands down, the best Cream of Wheat I have ever tasted. Prior to this, I wouldn't have believed it was possible to make Cream of Wheat taste that good.

ISO Great Boston Doughnuts

I've been getting pastries once a week for my office from Flour, but am kind of feeling like changing things up. Any great doughnut places in the city? South End or Backbay would be particularly convenient, but not required.

McCann's Steel Cut Oats Recipe

One final variation on this recipe that's perhaps worth posting. If you like creamy oatmeal, you can double the initial dose of water, and instead of leaving the oatmeal on the stove top over night, put it in the oven set to 190 F. Otherwise prepare as above. The resulting oatmeal will have almost none of the usual steel cut oatmeal texture, but will be very, very creamy. Like oatmeal pudding.

Who makes the best french fries in Boston?

I'm looking for a Boston version of NY's Balthazar, if that's any help. Crisp on the outside, light and fluffy inside, freshly made, piping hot and perfectly seasoned. Does any place in town hit this dish out of the park?

Thanksgiving Takeout near Hanover?

I thought about the Coop, which is an absolutely fantastic market, but most of the time their prepared foods taste kind of bland to me. I think they try to avoid using salt or something.

Thanksgiving Takeout near Hanover?

Just can't muster the energy to cook this year, but would love to have a good Thanksgiving dinner at home (Lyme, NH). Any suggestions for takeout turkey and fixings within 60 minutes drive of say, Hanover, NH?

Boston Espresso

Thank you! That is very exciting. Render looks to be just a couple of blocks from my house, and I will definitely be checking it out.

ISO Thanksgiving To Go?

Is there anyplace in the greater Boston area that does a great Thanksgiving to go? Looking for superb turkey, sides and a great pie (pumpkin or pecan), preferably all from a single source, but I'd be willing to make a couple of stops if that's what it takes. Any suggestions?

Recipe for Corn Nuts?

Lately, I've become obsessed with corn nuts. (Whole Foods in my area sells a nice version made in Spain that they call "quicos.") I'd love to try making my own. Anyone know how these little suckers are produced? Is it just deep fried corn kernals? Is there a particular type of corn that is used? (The Whole foods ones seem like they come from very big kernals.) Any advice would be much appreciated.

Good Soup To Go Near the Hancock?

That sounds great, but it looks like it's too far away to make it into my regular rotation

Good Soup To Go Near the Hancock?

Any suggestions for a reliably good bowl of lunch time soup within a reasonable walk of the Hancock Tower? TIA guys.

Restaurant suggestions for vegetarian & non-vegetarian near Copley Plaza?

PIcco Pizzeria in the South End is an easy walk or a very short cab ride, and is very good.

fave weekday breakfast places for taking out-of-town visitors?

Agree enthusiastically. Charlie's is superb, with wonderful food, great atmosphere, and a friggin' James Beard award!

Where can i find BISCOFF spread??

Probably not the low cost provider, but the little café at the ground floor of the John Hancock Tower in the Back Bay (Blue Glass Café, I think) sells this stuff. I'd never had it, and the Missus loves Nutella, so I bought a jar for her to try.

ISO Indian Mangoes

Just moved to Boston from Southern California, and in the Little India neighborhood of Orange County, there are a bunch of small grocery stores that sell imported Indian mangoes. I think they irradiate the cr*p out of them in order to get permission to bring them into the country, but that kind of thing tends not to bother me, and boy, are they delicious. Really, almost unbelievably sweet and flavorful.

So, my question is, is there anyplace in the greater Boston area that sells imported Indian mangoes (irradiated or otherwise)?

ISO Boston Shave Ice

Last summer, I spent a week in a little town in the middle of Kansas (Emporia). It gets hot and sticky there in summer, and in the middle of town there was a little shave ice stand. (I always think it should be called "shaved" ice, but am told that the dropped "d" is deliberate.) They shave the ice off of a big circular block, powder fine, pack it firmly into a cup, and douse it with whatever combination of flavored syrups one requests. They had 50 or 80 flavors, so the combinations really were almost infinite. I usually end up leaning toward tropical flavors -- mango, guava, pineapple, and coconut -- but sometimes cherry/lime is just the thing.

So, my question is, is there anyplace in Boston or surrounding areas that sells real shave ice -- freshly shaved ice, powder fine, with lots of flavored syrups to chose from? (While I love Korean shaved ice with the red bean paste, fruit cocktail, and Fruity Pebbles and all, and even the rough crushed Mexican raspados and snowcones, those are all really different animals.) Any suggestions?

Boston Espresso

I did not, but will check it out. (Just bought one of these -- http://www.chriscoffee.com/products/home/espresso/alex -- and, in learning to use it, have been saturating myself in espresso. Would be really nice to be able to talk with someone who actually knows what they're doing.)

The Salty Pig?

Walking to work today I noticed that a new restaurant apparently to be named the "Salty Pig" is opening (this weekend according to the workmen with whom I spoke). No sample menu to be found, but I love the name. It's at the very end of the corridor park, on Dartmouth across from the train station. Anyone know anything about it?

South End/Back Bay Top 10?

I've now visited several times and have tried the sausage and mushroom (my favorite to date; really like how they sauté the mushrooms before putting them on the pie), the bacon, caramelized onions and Gruyère, the broccoli rabe, sausage and olive, and the goat cheese and arugula. All excellent. I also like how they crank out really excellent pizza, but it's low key and unassuming (in contrast to, say, Mozza in Los Angeles). In fact, I may get a couple of pies to take home for dinner tonight! (Their warm spinach salad is also pretty damn good.)

South End/Back Bay Top 10?

The pizza at Picco is pretty damn good!

LA Hounds with One Day in Boston - Where to Eat?

Moved here from LA recently, and don't have enough Boston chops yet to presume to recommend. That said, however, if you have a chance, and you don't mind getting up early, you should try to make the short hike over to Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe on Columbus for breakfast one day if you can. (They open at 6, or 6:30, I think and are reasonably calm until 8 or so.) It a really cool little joint with real history, great food, and a James Beard award. Nothing like it (at least that I was ever able to find) in Los Angeles. The tomato and cheese omlet is excellent, as are the pancakes. Also, they do this thing here with muffins (blueberry, corn, etc.) where they grill them on a flat top; it's absolutely awsome!

Hope you have a great time in Boston. (It is a fabulous city!)

I wrote to them today. Unfortunately, they told me that the nearest machine is in NYC.

Anyone know if one of these is operating in Boston yet?

South End/Back Bay Top 10?

Just moved to the South End (from Los Angeles) and am working hard to find my footing in my new home town. (Incidentally, I've been here all of 8 weeks, and to date, Flour Bakery on Washington and Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe on Columbus are collectively responsible for about ten "extra" pounds that I'm going to have to starve off at some point soon.)

Anyway, wonder if folks have a view on a top ten list of places we should in the South End/Back Bay area. We have a little one at home, and if we're lucky, we get one "date night" per week. Fancy, or hole-in-the-wall, doesn't really matter, as long as the food's great. What places should we absolutely have sampled before the summer's over?

Popcorn

I mix Kosher salt with hot curry powder from Penzey's and grind them together in my electric spice grinder until they're super fine. (They stick to the popcorn better that way.) This makes a wonderful popcorn salt/seasoning, but be careful not to inhale the stuff or you'll be coughing and sneezing for a solid 30 minutes. I've also found that putting a little bit of the curry powder into the popping oil before popping really brings out the flavor and aroma of the curry, and it gives the popcorn a nice golden color.

Thanks so much Penny. I live in the South End and work in Back Bay.
