Where to buy whole, dried Piment d'Espelette?

Besides Tierra, Annabelle of La Tercera also sells them. If my Little French Kitchen requires whole chilis, the first thing she does with them is chop them into small pieces.

Oakland (Temescal): Barlata ... or ... B44 East

When we went in September, we got the impression that it would stay open as long as it was making money, but I don't know if that was an accurate impression.

This is a royal pain. I read 90% of the stuff in the past that was shown as new. It is a continuous problem. Why can't it work half as well as it used to. Read the complaints.

If it has that low weight, it should be able to float.

Champa Garden (Oakland) report

A very long time ago, I had salmon in a banana leaf with ginger, chili, cilantro and fish sauce and other things at Plearn when it was in the early days of it's original place on University. It was excellent. I am pretty sure I had no concept of flavor profiles or anything else that sophisticated. I just knew it tasted good.

local source for pickling crock weights?

I have successfully used a mason jar full of water on a plate. I have never done a small crock. Specifically a corian plate, although glass would work. I have also used a corked bottle of water.

Abalone?

Now there is farmed abalone available on the Pacific Coast. A long time ago there used to be only illegal fresh abalone in many restaurants.

Pumpkins . . . on the vine?

After they are cut off the vine, they have to cure for a week or so in the sun, which is maybe why you see them already cut loose. If there is another not quite ripe squash on the same vine as the one that you are interested in harvesting, you can damage it by cutting carelessly.

Andy will probably have peppers galore in the next couple of weeks. They will definitely show up in the mystery boxes and by the pound. The great thing about the mystery boxes is that you can sign up when it looks good. (This is Mariquita.)

The mystery boxes are $25. You sign up for the mailing list and then if you want a box, you order it, usually a few days in advance. The newsletter also lists what is going to be bulk for the week.
