Empress of China to close at the end of the year -- to be converted to high-tech office spaces?

I arrived here five years before you. There is a lot gone.

Abalone?

Now there is farmed abalone available on the Pacific Coast. A long time ago there used to be only illegal fresh abalone in many restaurants.

Pumpkins . . . on the vine?

Well, I just learned something. Thanks.

Pumpkins . . . on the vine?

After they are cut off the vine, they have to cure for a week or so in the sun, which is maybe why you see them already cut loose. If there is another not quite ripe squash on the same vine as the one that you are interested in harvesting, you can damage it by cutting carelessly.

Help finalizing restaurants, deserts, cocktail/speakeasy, as well as opinions on SF staples

It has been a couple of years since we went to Mamacita. Maybe they have improved a lot, but we found them bland and boring.

Andy will probably have peppers galore in the next couple of weeks. They will definitely show up in the mystery boxes and by the pound. The great thing about the mystery boxes is that you can sign up when it looks good. (This is Mariquita.)

The mystery boxes are $25. You sign up for the mailing list and then if you want a box, you order it, usually a few days in advance. The newsletter also lists what is going to be bulk for the week.

Where to buy fresh lard?

Both Fatted calf and Fifth quarter sell it as I am pretty sure Boccalone does.

Anyone used Good Eggs/Fair Share specialty food delivery services?

I have used them for various things, no produce or protein but I have bought bread on several occasions. They carry the Bar Tartine bread and are available in the East Bay.

Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market - Saturdays [San Francisco]

Go early, you will not regret it. After 9 or so, it gets really crowded.

Hatch Green Chiles 2014

I think I may have posted this somewhere before, but I once bought 25 lbs and checked them as luggage in a bag (long before 9/11) and my luggage was lost for two days--quite a disaster, but they did compost well.
