53rd and 6th halal.

Somebody once asked that question of Jonathon Gold and his response was Arax Falafel, 5101 Santa Monica Blvd. But while Arax was very good I can't say there was a strong resemblance to what you get from the Halal Guys.

Dim sum at King Hua: A Pictorial Essay

Elite has the pudding turnip cake too.

Has anyone ever braved K & A Canton Restaurant in the Cheviot Hills Shopping Center?

In a word, Americanized food. I do give them props for lasting since the late 1990s, but one visit was enough.

Best Take Out Dim Sum - SGV

I'd say definitely not, but for the existence of the emerging term "Shanghai dim sum". But unmodified "dim sum" it isn't.

Pinkberry coming to SF Union Square!

Bunch in Los Angeles have closed, including their original store.

Pinkberry coming to SF Union Square!

Are they still in business? I say this half in jest because the 3 locations closest to me have closed down.

Yunnan Garden Empire Repulsed in West Covina

In a stunning setback, the Yunnan Garden empire which was seemingly on an unstoppable march, was soundly (and quickly) defeated in West Covina. Barely 6 months after opening, Kun Ming Garden in the Hong Kong market shopping center on Glendora Ave. in West Covina is gone. Coming up next in that space is Golden Noodle and Deli, a Vietnamese noodle eatery.

As to (2) here is my compromise. XLB are dim sum if served at a Cantonese dim sum house. Otherwise, no.

Story I heard is that one Triumphal Palace partner bought out the other so naturally they're would be some changes, but there is a continuity there. I'd be curious if the Chinese name changed or remained the same.

Is Luscious Dumpling moving or expanding?

If it isn't, somebody is in for a big lawsuit. Also it looks like the developer is dealing with established tenants.

Best Take Out Dim Sum - SGV

Food was pretty much unchanged when Triumphal became Lunasia. I think it was more of an organizational change.

The pan fried beef dumplings are more than edible. The inauthentic part is probably best demonstrated by the fact that everybody behind the counter speaks Cantonese.

Capital Seafood in Monterey Park has a take out branch a few doors down from the main restaurant, though they don't have all of the varieties there. Also, East Gourmet (Garvey @ San Gabriel) has a separate take out dim sum section. Service is instantaneous (except for waiting in line) and you don't need to clutter up the main restaurant entrance.

Hunan Tasty serves what I refer to as "faux Hunan" food, which arrived in New York about 40 years ago and purported to be Hunan style Chinese food. However, if you compare the menu at Hunan Tasty to those at the Hunan style restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley, there is almost no overlap except for some noodle dishes. Also, authentic Chinese restaurants don't serve chop suey, like Hunan Tasty does.

Dongbei Food Comes To Chandler

Well it's more of a discovery than a recommendation in that's it's the only game in town (actually, hundreds of miles) for this type of cuisine, as evidenced by a full house Sunday lunch. I had my favorite green bean sheet with cucumbers and peanut butter sauce. Not as good as that at Dongbei Mama on Geary, but good enough!

Best restaurant view of Golden Gate Bridge fireworks

Yes, way too far. Unless you're within 1 to 2 miles at most, it's not worth watching fireworks.

ISO "dao xiao mian" (handmade chewy noodles cut from ball with a knife) in Los Angeles

Yes, that was Heavy Noodling, 153 E. Garvey, successor to Dow Shaw at 432 E. Valley

Actually, I think Dow Shaw was the original spot for what is now JTYH

Who remembers Dow Shaw Noodle House in San Gabriel (1990s) and whatever happened to that noodle maker?

Neither Twin Dragon nor Hunan Tasty are authentic Chinese, though they aren't bad.

With all due respect, Joss and Xian are terrible and particularly inauthentic.

Dongbei Food Comes To Chandler

There's been a small explosion of Dongbei style Chinese restaurants (Northeastern China food) lately, but it's been in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay area, and Flushing, NY. Consequently, when I saw that a restaurant called Chou's Kitchen had opened up where something called China and Hawaiian had previously stood, I was not prepared to confront a full blown Dongbei restaurant full of dumplings, buns, meat pies, and even Dalian seafood noodle soup. You'd have to go 400 miles west or a more than a couple thousand miles east to find this kind of food. Chou's Kitchen is at 910 N. Alma School Road if you can fight through the road construction on Alma School.

Well, several places fall within your 10 mile radius--The Palace on Wilshire and Barrington, Mandarin Kitchen on Westwood near Santa Monica, and Hop Woo on Olympic and Santa Monica immediately come to mind.

Help A Sino-lovin' Brother Out in the West SGV Please

The English name at 9679 Las Tunas is Hao Yu Lai. It's only on the exterior signage, not the menus etc. Most all of the new places in the SGV get mentioned on the board, so I don't know which ones you've noted. Biggest recent splashes probably have been Wang Xing Ji in San Gabriel Square and Shaanxi Gourmet in Rosemead.

Coming Attractions: Emperor Noodles and Lady Bug Teahouse

For those of you who have run out of new places to try in the San Gabriel Valley, help is on the way. Emperor Noodles is opening in San Gabriel up where Lao Bian Dumplings used to be, while Lady Bug, I believe, is replacing a place that only served tea in the old Crawford's Corner shopping center in Alhambra now anchored by 1 6 8 Market. If you beat me there when they open, please post a report.

best old school dim sum in Chinatown right now?

Is there a restaurant at 30 Pell St.? Delight 28 is at 28 Pell and ABC is at 34 Pell and I didn't think there was another restaurant in between.

Return To Wah's Golden Hen For Old Time Cantonese

Wah's has been closed for remodeling for a number of weeks. I hope it is a remodel in response to their being named this year by Eater LA as one of the top 10 Chinese restaurants outside the San Gabriel Valley, as opposed to the usual meaning when a Chinese restaurant is "Closed For Remodeling".

Dim sum at King Hua: A Pictorial Essay

Ate at King Hua this afternoon for lunch and it never filled up completely. While I'm not going to say it's better than Sea Harbour or Elite, it sure was good!

Visitor -- Coffee? Chinatown? Good Bar for a Single Lady?

Agree that S.F.Chinatown is worth one visit. Neither SF Chinatown nor NY Chinatown has particularly exceptional food but it's such a large and bustling area that it would be a shame to come to SF and not see it.

Xi'an Famous Foods Opening More Upscale Sit Down Branch on Main St. Flushing

Apparently open with some kind of half off special.
