Kosher in West Palm Beach, FL

It seems that all of the kosher restaurants, and there were only a couple, in this area have closed. One was owned and run by a wonderful Israeli couple but their help, i feel drove them into the ground. There was a distinct attitude problem and even with the limited menu they had, they never had a fraction of what was listed and that was not good. Service was horrid. Another place had been opened by an Asian woman who also depended on her employees to run the place and she was never around. Same story. Its a pity that with all the Jews in this area there is really no kosher place to dine out without driving a distance and when they have opened, between the excessively high prices, miserable food and poor service, they don't last.

List of kosher meats comparable to treif?

Is there a list that anyone knows of that will show which kosher cuts of meat are comparable for specific recipes to treif ones. I know the obvious but its things like tenderloin that i want to use a comparable type of meat basically for cooking times and tenderness etc. Input will be greatly appreciated.

Your disappointing purchases from Costco

I am in So. Florida and i was shocked a few weeks ago. I was going to purchase the large bags of frozen broccoli. In very small print on the back, you really had to look for it, it says that it is a product of CHINA. Last week they had in the regular section bags of roasted chestnuts. They are also from CHINA. There is no way i would ever even consider ingesting anything from china and i am really disappointed in Costco. In the past i have tried contacting corp. about another product and they really didn't want to hear about it. In fact the man who called me back was downright sarcastic so i no longer bother. I simply tell anyone who happens to be near the product considering it to check the country of origin for themselves.

ADA, OKLAHOMA

Yes i believe all of her products are although i have not checked out every single one...they are not bad in a pinch for a frozen something.

ADA, OKLAHOMA

I never realized that one question would/could result in some of the responses. The trip to Ada is coming up very shortly and it will only be for about 4 nights on business. Very long days. I did speak to a lovely man the other day whose phone number was listed as a Shul in town. As it turned out it went directly to his business office. He was very sweet and quite informative and basically told me the same thing that you have. The families there used to have the kosher meat trucked in but it was given up a while ago

ADA, OKLAHOMA

Vallevin I just reread what i had typed. My new spell check evidently didn't care for what may have been a misspelling of the word "readily" and somehow i ended up with "deadly".....please forgive.

ADA, OKLAHOMA

And have dreams about Srulies or Shallots.

ADA, OKLAHOMA

Thank you for introducing me to the Noah's Ark web site. I had never heard of them before and its nice to have information for future travel needs. Most of my travel is for business rather than pleasure, so I am arriving either very late the night before or the morning of early appointments and work thru to the evening. There really is no time to start driving around seeking food to first start cooking/heating etc...but this way it can be deadly available. I appreciate the input.

ADA, OKLAHOMA

Sorry, if i confused you. Evidently my sense of humor didnt quite come thru here. I was exaggerating about 'bread and water' and honestly assumed that had come across.

ADA, OKLAHOMA

Thank you all very much for your informative and speedy replies. I really appreciate them. I have found that there is actually a walmart supercenter in the town and they do have some amy's meals among other things...not like sitting down to a nice hot meal, but certainly better than bread and water LOL. We have been so spoiled over the years living in NJ/FL/IL with having kosher food readily available and during those times had not realized just how fortunate we were. Wishing you all a belated Shana Tova.

ADA, OKLAHOMA

I would appreciate any input on this.

I must travel to Ada, Oklahoma and yes i realize it is probably not the most highly populated area for Jewish families, but does anyone know of any kosher restaurants or places to purchase already prepared kosher food there? There WILL NOT be anywhere to prepare food, so raw anything that requires cooking is out.

As a last resort a good restaurant for fresh fish would have to suffice.

Thank you in advance.

ST. LOUIS kosher

Thank you all for your rapid responses with updated information. We have utilized Kohns in the past and they are pretty good for lunch take out but not open for dinner. It is such a pity that so many towns/cities had such large Jewish populations and over the years the kosher establishments are simply gone. Worse yet are the ones that have Jewish names, magen david on the windows and such and yet are not kosher at all. But again, thank you for the input.

ST. LOUIS kosher

I have not been on here in quite some time and listings seem rather new for me. I am attempting to find a kosher deli or restaurant in the St. Louis area. I do not have any facility to utilize a supermarket and do prefer a place to actually sit down for a meal. I Will be staying at the Four Seasons, so something in that general area would be great. Any suggestions?

Would you want these guys to re-write your menu? [moved from General Topics]

Either this is some sort of joke or the writer/advertiser just came across the border a few days ago.

Best deli in Boca/Delray/Boynton

Actually, Strathmore may have nice food, but they are NOT KOSHER.

Does lactose free marg./butter exist? [Moved from Home Cooking board]

Smart Balance LIght is a parve/dairy free item. It has an excellent taste and works well in cooking and baking.

PHOENICIA MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE -- HIGHLAND PARK, ILLINOIS

I had the great opportunity to dine at Phoenicia for lunch and dinner recently. Every employee at this restaurant makes you feel at home and a truly welcome guest. We had a grilled chicken dish at one meal and roasted lamb at another. Both were exceptional as were the sides served with them. But i want to tell you about my new passions there. They make a babaganoush that is so light, fluffy and smokey. No seeds and no eggplant peel in it. Very different than what i have been used to and absolutely the best. Their carrot soup is exceptional. It is thick and creamy, although it has not a drop of dairy product in it. It has the most wonderful taste and texture and puts all others to shame. OH, yes i forgot, the baklava. You must try theirs. It is flaky, sweet, mouth watering, topped with chopped pistachio, cant get enough of it good.

SORRY MY ERROR: i meant to type babaganoush and in error typed humus. Sorry.

PASADENA - ALTADENA Fresh Fish

WOW, i had not expected to receive responses so quickly. Thank you all very much for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

PASADENA - ALTADENA Fresh Fish

Does anyone have any suggestions for fresh fish restaurants in the Altadena - Pasadena area? Am going to be there on business shortly and would like to find a really good place for dinner as well as lunch. Thank you in advance.

Costco Nanuet Kosher Beef

The Costco in the West Palm Beach areas have only the empire frozen chicken breasts and carry a vacuum packed pastrami that is truly horrible. Other than that, nothing in the meat line that you are discussing. I guess their people in charge of working on demographics for their stores have decided we have no Jews here. Must be the same man in Costco corporate i spoke with about a year ago when they stopped serving their kosher hot dogs at the snack bar and he told me that they had done a survey of all of their Jewish employees at corporate(perhaps all one or two of them?) and were told that people didnt care.

Shallots New Location

Hurray it is open!! My friends ate there last night and loved it. Said the new place has lots of parking, is beautiful inside but best of all the food is terrific.

New Kosher Deli in Skokie - Srulie's

Love the food. I had the schnitzel deluxe sandwich which was enough for 2 lunches. I also tried the hot dog in a light pastry dough which i loved which is surprising since i am not wild about hot dogs in general. The kishke was the best i have ever eaten and elicited a reaction something similar to "when harry met sally". The chopped liver is better than anything mom made.

Kosher items at BJ's Wholesale Club

Actually BJ's is located in 15 states, Florida included. As to the products you mentioned most if not all are available at Costco and many in BJs. I find that much depends on the location of the store. From what i understand Costco in New York carries a wide variety of kosher meats and the only kosher meat we have available down here in south Florida are the kosher Empire chicken parts. Yes we do have that kosher pastrami and or corned beef, but since it is a vacuum packed item i wouldnt necessarily refer to it as fresh and it has no taste comparable to what one gets in a terrific New York kosher deli.

KOSHER MEAT.....northern Illinois and West Palm Beach

My family has been ordering glatt kosher meat from goldenwestglatt.com over the past few months and have been very pleased with it. The prices seem to be excellent, large selection, and speedy delivery. I have read some of the prices that people pay in New York and am amazed that it is so inexpensive, but these prices and quality beat many in the Chicago and West Palm Beach areas which are considerably more than New York.

SAN FRANCISCO KOSHER MEAT RESTAURANT

I realize that there have been numerous posts about Kosher in San Francisco but the restaurants seem to open (few of them) and then drop like flies. Has anyone been to the city recently and know of any kosher MEAT restaurants that they feel are good? While i am certain that there may be many milchig places you can suggest, dairy is totally out of the question, but thank you any way. Thank you in advance.

Zomicks in Florida

Does anyone know if Zomicks challot are carried by any markets in the West Palm Beach area? Thank you in advance for any replies and wishing you all a Shana Tova.

Parve Ranch Dressing

Does anyone know of a brand of parve ranch dressing OR can give me a really good recipe for it? Thank you in advance.

Chain Restaurants in peril

I agree. We had a very nice Krispy Kreme here in West Palm Beach. The original doughnuts were fantastic but the coffee was absolutely horrid. Dunkin actually has the good coffee. They also didnt know anything about customer service. They had a company policy here( i dont know if it was/is nationwide) that when the red light was on, customers could receive a free fresh doughnut right off the line. I had been caring for my mother, who was quite elderly and unable to walk easily and we went to their drive up where i purchased 4 dozen doughnuts to go...not a bad purchase and i asked for our free doughnuts since we could not walk in...i was informed that if i wanted the free doughnuts, one for each of the 2 of us, i would have to walk in...if there had been another outlet locally, and if i had not already paid her, i would have driven off.

Shallots Bistro in Skokie, IL

I have been to Shallots Bistro both under the older ownership and the new and I find the new to be much more pleasant. The service is more attentive. The food more inventive. In fact, they have now started a Sushi Wednesday where they have the regular, diverse menu, but also a wide variety of delicious sushi dishes. I love the place and receive everything that I would expect from a top restaurant that just happens to be kosher.

Kosher Restaurants in Chicago...

I agree with the rest of those posting here. Shallots in Skokie is the best. Nice atmosphere, terrific service and outstanding food. I have been there for dinner numerous times and loved it, but i understand that they also have a buffet lunch that i want to try one day. Their web site is Shallotsbistro.com
