Frosty Melon's Profile
meetinghouse biscuits
Can anyone attest to the quality of these? This sounds like a great gift for my biscuit-loving Dad in Michigan.
Best Food at (Non Fancy) Bars in San Francisco
The Orbit Room at Market & Laguna started taking their food offerings more seriously a few months back, even adding a pizza oven. I haven't tried it yet but am curious.

Del Popolo Pizza Truck -- Anyone Tried It?
Truck was at 3rd & Mission again on Saturday. Here's a photo of the white pizza and of the truck itself. I won't go into specific details since I'm no pizza expert, but I'd compare this to what Delfina does (though I haven't been to PD in at least a year). I felt the crust could use a little more salt but the cheeses were really nice and creamy, and the char on the crust was perfect for me. I ate it on a bench in the shade of the Jewish Contemporary Museum.
The price was up to $10 as per the website, which seemed a real value to me (I'd say the size was a bit larger than a frisbee). There was no line at 1:30 pm and only two others were eating pizza. Granted that's a bit late for lunch but I felt bad there weren't more people in line or chowing down.
Del Popolo Pizza Truck -- Anyone Tried It?
I came across the truck on Mission Street across from Yerba Buena Gardens on Saturday around 1 pm...5 minutes after I ate lunch. I saw several people eating from open pizza boxes but couldn't get a decent look at the product. The price I liked, though -- $7 per pizza (their website says $10). Two varieties were on offer.
They were at Sydney Walton Square today according to their twitter (I don't even know where that is).

Suggestions for lunch only M-F restaurants
Barracuda took its space over from Tin Pan, which wasn't Scandinavian, but Asian. Was something else there I'm forgetting?
Schmendricks- Real bagels? Who in NY bakes on a cookie sheet?
Is Twitter the only way to find out where/how these bagels are available?
Is Wayfare Tavern worth it?
I second this. The popovers served gratis before the meal were the high point for me.
Do people really drink a 4-ounce cup of coffee?
Isn't that a double espresso, and not a cup of coffee?
Zante Pizza [San Francisco] - La Lengua Chronicles Part 11
Here's a photo of the Indian pizza I had in March (this is the meat version) at Zante. Same here with the toppings being cut up so small you can't differentiate, but the flavors were really nice. I wouldn't go for this all the time when craving pizza, but it was a welcome change of pace. Re-heated the next day beautifully, too.
As a side note, I was here with a large group, and many others ordered traditional Indian meals. I'd stick with the pizza judging from their reactions.
Best deep dish pizza?
Patxi's is as close as it gets to the Giordano's and Carmen's stuffed pizza I remember from my years in Chicago (93-97). Chicago has so many varieties of pizza (deep dish/stuffed/pan/deep pan, etc.) it's usually a stretch to make any kind of comparison.
But I agree with you -- when I'm hungry for pizza here in SF the choice is always Little Star (deep dish).
Mission Bowling Club Burger [split thread]
Oh, I know that's how it's described. I'm curious about first-hand experiences with it specifically at MBC, and at this price.
Mission Bowling Club Burger [split thread]
Wait, so the controversial (at least on other blogs/sites) $15 Mission Bowling Club burger is a winner? If there've been reports here I've missed them.
Visiting from Boston with my 15 yo daughter
The Westfield food court might not have outposts of Sbarro or McDonald's, but it still feels like a food court (loud, cramped and crowded) plus (minus?) it's in a mall basement. I stop there (Sorabol or Coriander) for quick bites because it's in between my gym and the Powell underground metro stop, but I don't recommend it to anyone unless the convenience makes it necessary.
Nearby, I'll vouch for La Boulange (on Market at 3rd, or the new one right nearby at Metreon), Super Duper Burger, Tropisueno, or The Grove (slightly farther away at Mission at 3rd). None of these is more expensive (in my experience) than the Westfield food court, but the atmosphere (perhaps excepting Super Duper) is far better.
Also -- Out the Door at Westfield is still closed and has been for months. I seriously doubt they'll be reopening at all, but I'm not sure.
Top Chef: where are they now (ongoing)
Bravo's announced an upcoming new series seemingly taking after this thread:
“Life After Top Chef”
For the first time cameras are taken outside of the Top Chef kitchen and into the lives of Bravo’s most beloved former cheftestants as they reach milestones in their personal lives and culinary careers. From opening their own restaurants to expanding their growing franchises, viewers will follow Jen Carroll in Philadelphia, Richard Blais in Atlanta, Fabio Viviani in Los Angeles, and Spike Mendelsohn in D.C.
Burgers and coffee, that's elf food, apparently -- your thoughts solicited
Finally had the burger at Citizen's Band a few weeks ago and agree it is solid. Should've taken a photo. Burger was cooked to order. I think it was bested soon thereafter by Southern Pacific Brewing Co.'s burger, also cooked to order. I posted a photo of that one in a thread about SPB, which has an outdoor seating area (nice if weather cooperates and is not too crowded).
Paula Deen on SNL
What else about Deen is there to parody besides her accent and fondness for butter & oil, which were the dominant components of the skit? Wiig's enthusiasm is commendable, and going drag is old-hat for SNL (Snooki, Joy Behar, etc.).
Expecting anything on SNL to be brilliant is to beg for disappointment (I watch each new episode hoping for surprise. Sometimes I get it, more often I don't.)
Great First Visit to the new Southern Pacific Brewing in the Mission [San Francisco]
I went for lunch on this beautiful past Saturday. The picnic tables outside were all occupied so we sat inside. My burger was really great, and in a word, substantial. Couldn't finish the sage fries though I tried. Loved the specially made ketchup pane mentions -- and truly appreciated that it came in a squeeze bottle, and not in a little tin cup like so many upscale burger presentations offer.
It was just getting crowded at 2:15 pm but was not packed, and I liked the mix of clientele (hipsters + young families). Hard to find, but worth it.
Best steakhouse in San Francisco
Interestingly enough, Delfina's steak is one of my favorite things there.
Cooked Lobster Meat Sources?
Any tips on where to find cooked fresh lobster meat? I need about 1.5 lbs. Whole Foods is my only idea...I want to avoid Costco (not a member) and Trader Joe's (no car and a little out of the way for me). Anywhere in SF easily accessible by Bart or Muni would be great.
NEW: Clare's Deli, SF Mission (New East Coast Deli)
I went last night for the Monday steak dinner. For the $10 pricetag, not bad -- satisfying and homey. But pretty basic, and the meat quality was fine but not top-notch. Peas and garlic bread were swapped in for spinach and yorkshire pudding. Only three tables inside but we were the only ones eating there. They offered to go, for here or served next door (at the 500 Club).
First restaurant meal of the New Year?
The sign in Galette 88's window says "reopening Jan. 3".
Uses for leftover mascarpone?
I have roughly 6 oz. of a container of mascarpone leftover after making tomorrow's dessert. The container suggests spreading on bread. Any other ideas or is it basically that similar to cream cheese?
Help with "Vernors"
Interesting. I looked at that location when this thread first appeared and did not see it.
new log in issues
I'm having a similar problem. When I go to my chowhound "home" page (the one I use most often -- SF Bay Area), I am not logged in. When I try to log in, I get the spinning wheel forever and give up. But when I go to Home Cooking, General Topics, Media/News, etc., I'm automatically logged in. Back to SF Bay Area, logged out.
I'm on Google Chrome in Windows XP.
AQ - SF
Just had lunch at Deli Board nearby. There's a sign at AQ that they're closed for lunch for the time being with a mention of retooling and opening again in the new year. Still open for dinner, and per the website, for Sunday brunch.
Cotogna review
Note the regular menu is not available on Sundays.
Here's the Sunday Supper menu for 12/4:
First of the season Dungeness crab
Buckwheat gnocchi
Game hen & wood grilled pork sausage
Profiteroles
$48 per person
Tacolicious: The Mission by way of the Marina (now in the Mission)
I was there yesterday for lunch and agree with your last-paragraph assessment. I don't understand the taco pricing -- groups of 1, 4 and 10? The table of 2 next to me split a 10-taco platter. It felt like they were in a contest.
So two of us shared three dishes, starting with the enchiladas mentioned above, which looked great but which we thought were just ok (and too salty). The best-tasting dish of the three was the albacore tuna tostadas. We also liked the shrimp a la diabla, which came with 2 tortillas but should have come with 4. It was all pretty tasty, but fairly overpriced compared to what you'd get at Chilango, for instance. We also were served chips and a tangy mild salsa (no charge).
It's very cute, very bright on a sunny day with a long patio and great mural outside. The tile floor is pretty to look at, and as we were told, was the only component of the restaurant to arrive/happen on time. But I'm not dying to go back.
Enough rustic italian!
Take a look at Boxing Room in Hayes Valley (Cajun/comfort food). Attached is the fried chicken I had on Saturday night. Overall I was really impressed with the food, room & service.
