Peter's Profile

Breakfast at Bubby's in DUMBO- Never again.

Don't worry that too many will follow in your footsteps. Bubby's in Brooklyn is closing up shop any day now. Maybe that's why they were "out" of so many things? Maybe they were genuinely out! For good!

Rehearsal Dinner in Dec.

The excellent Chinese restaurant Spicy & Tasty in Flushing has a private room off to the side upstairs -- not sure if it can fit 40 people. You could feast there for $40 a head.

Catania - Ca-put?

Just walked by 30 minutes go -- still closed.

Googa Mooga Food Festival in Prospect Park

They may have encouraged reusable water bottles but 1) they didn't give any means to actually REFILL such bottles and 2) while they may have encouraged Nalgenes and such, there were numerous reports if open Poland Spring and Dasani type bottles being thrown out upon entry per security's direction. :-/

Googa Mooga Food Festival in Prospect Park

No, it's not hard at all. But a good number of people, understandably, cracked the seal on their bottle and took a swig or two on the way into the park. And if you had an open container they wouldn't allow you to bring it in -- I suppose because you might have filled the bottle with vodka?

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge..great lunch deal for a foodie....

I can second everything BilkyBob said above with two notes.

1. Don't confuse the new Iris Take-Away with Iris Cafe. Same owner, just 75' apart.

2. Haven't been to Gran Electrica yet. But Colonie is fabulous so the owners know what they're doing.

Brooklyn Fare

Any chance you want to share Heidi's number? ;-)

Egg Slicer?

HillJ-

I bought that same style -- but with some black plastic parts instead of all metal -- from Williams-Sonoma. It had a broken wire within 25 uses. :-/

Are Sub Zero refrigerators worth the price?

I've never paid for a sub-zero but I've inherited them three(!) times in moves (four times if you count my childhood) and all I can say is that wow -- produce placed in a subzero lasts 3x to 5x as long as produce in the other fridges I've had.

I don't know if that's worth the premium price -- I won't know until it's time to replace this one in a decade or two but for now I sure do appreciate the head of lettuce that stays fresh for two weeks.

Frigidaire vs. Subzero

My SZ is going on 14 years old without a single problem. And I LOVE IT. Produce, especially leafy greens, stay fresh for weeks. Literally.

Are Sub Zero refrigerators worth the price?

Ditto, ditto, ditto.

arancini... could you be thinking of Ferdinando's Focceria on Union just West of Hicks?

Agreed that Lucali is the cream of this crop... I'm only concerned you'll be too full to properly enjoy it.

Party for 20-30 Brooklyn or Mahattan

If you can keep the list to 23 or so, tge wine cellar at Convivium Osteria is a stunning room with delicious food.

New range - Blue Star or Viking or Capital - or something else?

Take another look at American. We love it. Just as simple as Bluestar but with vastly superior fit and finish. We have zero regrets.

How you use your immersion blender

Two of my uses that aren't mentioned are:

-- Yogurt smoothies. Greek yogurt + honey + frozen fruit makes a quick and yummy smoothie.

-- microwave a few sweet potatoes. Rough chop them. Add cream or buttermilk or sour cream or yogurt. Add some chipotle pepper in adobo sauce. Add some salt and maple syrup. Blend away. You end up with light, fluffy, spicy addictively delicious sweet potato purée.

Brooklyn dinner for 9 on Friday in April

I love the food at queen but do know that the vibe of the place has nothing in common with most if the newer Beooklyn restaurant scene. It really is quite tacky and will likely be half-empty.

That said, the food is great, especially if you stick to the specials and appetizers.

Personally, I would have recommended Saul to you. Quiet, charming, delicious. Applewood us my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn but is VERY noisy and would require a cab or subway ride. Colonie is our new neighborhood go-to (we live 3 blocks away) but its also very noisy.

Bob's Red Mill in bulk?

Are you interested because he has a gluten-free oat product? If you don't care about gluten-free you could look at Sahadi's for a large volume of oats.

Seeking: Best $50 or less--Park Slope and vicinity

Don't know if they're open on Mondays but have you thought about Locanda Vini et Olii?

Why oh why did I wait 10+ years to go to Locanda Vini e Olii?

So glad you enjoyed it -- it's one of my go-to places with out-of-town guests or Manhattan snobs.

While a meal for two there is great, I think it really, really shines when you go with a party of six and order 5 or 6 courses (not 6 dishes per course of course, more like 2 to 3). That way the evening i longer and you get to try a much, much wider variety of dishes.

Brooklyn - Dinner Recs.

If you're looking for "farm to table" and price isn't an issue, that you must, must. must enjoy a meal at Applewood in Park Slope. They hold "Meet the Farmer" dinners about 8 times a year, take their ingredient sourcing VERY seriously, and can be found on many people's list of top 5 "special" restaurants in Brooklyn.

Ample HIlls Creamery Hype overwhelms reality

Ample Hills has more "creative" flavors than Blue Marble, and has a few flavors I really like, but is not remotely close to them in the sophistication of flavor.

Personally, I think Blue Marble's strawberry ice cream might be the best ice cream ever made. By anyone. Anywhere. Ever.

(Except maybe not the strawberry they sell in pints -- it seems to have a different, fluffier mouthfeel. I think they pump air into it to save money.)

Locanda Vini e Olii: is it worth it?

They changed the bread???!? In my opinion, that was the only hole in the entire menu. I'll have to hustle on over there. Thanks for the tip.

Anything new or interesting on Smith, Court, Henry, or Columbia Street?

On par with Seersucker in both quality and price (and almost in style/decor though maybe it's a point or two lower there), my wife and I LOVE Sue Perette on Smith Street. GREAT steak, GREAT lentil salad, GREAT... well, almost everything we've had. We don't understand why this place isn't busier.

First time at Colonie

Glad you enjoyed Colonie -- I know my wife and I have about 7 times already. One note, there are 3 dishes not to be missed:

The beet and orange salad
The deep-friend brussel sprouts with bacon
The sticky date cake with salted creme fraiche ice cream

Really, it's the sticky date cake that you really, really, really should not miss. One of the best desserts in all of NYC.

OLD MEXICO on MONTAGUE STREET - STILL OPEN?

While I agree that it may be 25 years since more than 2 tables were occupied, it hasn't been 15 years since it closed. It was still open when I moved to the neighborhood 11.5 years ago and was still open when I moved back to the neighborhood 8 years ago. I think it closed around 6 years ago.

10th Wedding anniversary, need to score a table in a week! *Please help*!

Convivium is a great choice but I'd also throw out Locanda Vini E Olii. Great food, unexpected for it's location, and ultra-charming interior.

You'll have no problem getting a table and don't be worried if you show at 7 and it's dessert. The place will be packed by 8:30. (So maybe make a later reservation.)

You'd likely want to take a car service each way but it will come in WAY under $300 so you'll still be on budget (I can't think of anywhere in Brooklyn to spend $300 for two other than Brooklyn Fare and the tasting menu Roberta's)

Colonie in Brooklyn Heights?

Having eaten there 5+ or so times, the review of the food was pretty spot-on. Almost everything we've eaten has been very, very good to excellent with the exception of some of the "large plates". (Though we both love the scallops -- not sure why he didn't care for them.)

I'm not sure why he finds the staff lacking though. While we've received excellent attention from the owners, we've always had excellent service from the general staff as well. In 5 or 6 visits I can only think of one moment when I had to make an effort to catch someone's attention.

(And yes, that's my wife and me in the review photo. I've now officially received my 15 minutes of fame.)
