Best Sandwiches in westchester?

Croton Mini-Deli on Maple Avenue in Croton on Hudson has a fine touch with basic deli sandwiches - turkey/swiss, tuna fish, etc. Serves up lunch for lots of folks working over at Metro North depot, so generous servings. They can completely make my day by preparing the elusive olive loaf/American cheese/mayo/mustard on rye bread sandwich of my childhood. Just have to avoid turning around to the shelves where they sell the Hostess snowballs and Ring Dings and such of my childhood chubbiness. :-)

New farm-to-table in Purdy's to open

Happy news... will have to give it a try, and glad they are taking reservations. I live 5 minutes from Ocean House, but have only been there twice because of the idiotic no reservations crap. How hard can it be to write some names down? I'd even be willing to pay a fee for a no-show. We spend our money at the fish monger at the farmer's market instead.

Great Thai in Sleepy Hollow

I second that... the folks who own it are delightful, and the food is really pretty good all around. Spouseman always gets the massuman (sp?) curry. I try to wander more broadly into soup, noodle dishes, etc. We like the chicken wraps very much. Never get there as often as I wish, but glad you've found it. Keep them busy!

upper westchester near Peekskill

Also in Croton, Umami (check what time they start brunch on Sundays)

Fresh baked(?) bread with zaatar (sp?) on it (Westchester?)

I've got a hankering for this (typically get it at a place near my office in NYC, but am Westchester bound due to a broken foot). Anyone know of where I might send magnificent spouseman out on a mission of mercy to buy some (fresh made!?) middle eastern bread with zaatar spices on it?

Thanks,

Limping Along...

Best Chili? Westchester/Hudson Valley

Non-traditional, but I adore the white chicken chile at the Croton Landing Tavern in Croton-on-Hudson. I've their regular chili on nachos, which was pretty great, too.

Promising lunch at Charchaels

Any relation to the dog truck labeled "Charchaels" that sits at Route 134 and Route 100 in Millwood?

Sausage Gravy with Biscuits in Westchester?

Thanks all. Not up to making them myself at the moment (off my feet due to broken bones in foot, and no weight bearing for another 2-3 wks). But thought I'd get spouseman to drive me to the biscuits and gravy. Will give the Mahopac place a try. Danbury can do en route next time I visit sis in Rhode Island.

Croton Outdoor Winter Market replaces Briarcliff Indoor Market

That would be DREADFUL! Parking at CVS/postoffice/Zeytinia is horrific.

How about at the old Dodge dealers in Harmon for an indoor space? Who owns that space, and are they community minded enough to welcome/insure the farmer's market?

Just moved to Cortlandt Manor...

Anyone know if Ravenna (is that in CM or Peekskill) is still open (next to pizza place in Family Dollar store shopping area)? We've had a couple of very nice meals with friends who live in PV.

Sausage Gravy with Biscuits in Westchester?

Hankering for some southern food... Any leads on Westchester biscuits and gravy will be SO appreciated!

Croton Outdoor Winter Market replaces Briarcliff Indoor Market

Thanks for the heads up - we'll happily head to Croton, also just a few minutes away, for fish and chicken and and and!

anyone tried Taste in Buchanan yet?

Went on Weds night (we are, alas, not wine bottle drinkers - I had a nice Merlot and DH had a single malt). Solid cooking - beautifully seared chicken breast on a sweet potato mash, a steamed fish on basmati with ginger-soy broth. Server Rich was very nice, chef accomodating to our not-so-into fennel and bok choy by swapping out to nicely sauteed baby spinach. Comfy room, happy vibe (we went around 6:30 so it was perhaps a tad early - didn't have a reservation but that wasn't a problem at that hour on a Weds). Too stuffed for desserts, which sounded pretty yummy. Looking forward to a next visit.

Mytho's in Thornwood Town Center

Gonna try it out tonight... NY Times notice was pretty good. I'm on a diet, so will be sticking mostly with veggies and such, but will be sure to taste what my buddies order and report back!

Los Abuelos (Ossining ) impresses me again

Glad to hear this - haven't been to Los Abuelos in awhile (been on a diet and have lost 40 pounds since May), but I'll make a point to get by there soon. The family who runs it is so very nice, and the food always enjoyable.

Dinner before the Paramount Center (Peekskill)

Peekskill Brewhouse, down by the train station has a nice selection of beers, and pretty good food, too.

Good meal at Alain's French Bistro, Nyack

Went with parents and spouse on Friday night - table were turning, people seemed happy. Our group had salads (endive/beet/goat cheese, and frisee). Frisee had too much dressing on it, but all else spot on. Bread at the table delish. Generous pour of Glenfidditch, and a white wine that my dad liked. Entrees included pork shank (enough for take home, falling off the bone), scallops (beatifully seared but a sixth one would have felt more generous alongside the fettucine), calves liver and onions (awesomely caramelized, just the right "done" ness on the liver). Spouse did potato leek soup and codfish fritters, both of which hit the spot. We were stuffed at that point, so got just two dessers - macaroon martini and three sorbet sampler - regretfully kind of ordinary both of them. Illy espresso hit the spot. But a solid experience, and happy to see the tables turn while allowing for leisurely dining. A few families with well behaved mid-aged children (8-14 I'd guess) was also pleasant to see. Only challenge seemed to be getting them to take our credit card when the time came... but all gracious and enjoyable. Good luck, and I'm wishing them well with this venture!

Thanksgiving dinner at '76 House in Old Tappan

You are right - the Caesar was spot on - and they indulged my love of lemony in the dressing. Fun for them to do it tableside.

Thompson's Cider Mill, Ossining

Haven't had one of their pies in a long while, but it's not sticking in my memory (so I'm going to have to assume it was not memorable - but I hope others can chime in with more recent and hopefully postive feedback!). I ADORE their cider and freeze several after the season's done. Best thing we bring to Thanksgiving with our family. If you get a pie, let us know how it turns out.

Thanksgiving dinner at '76 House in Old Tappan

Had lunch there with an old friend from Closter about 6 months ago (first time in about 20 years). Perfectly satisfactory lunch (salads, soup, etc.). I imagine it'd be fine for Thanksgiving if you are looking for a solid, perhaps not dazzling, experience/ I hope others can provide you with more dinner/holiday insights, and wish you happy holidays!

elita's deli, ossining

Sound delish - thanks for peeking into this, and we'll give them a try too. I adore tamales.

Anton's in Croton

Oh no - we were just there a week or two ago for lunch, which was delish as always. I hope they can recover quickly!

unpasteurized apple cider

Thomsom (Thompson?) Orchard in Yorktown. Small enterprise near Teatown (on Blinn Road?). They make super cider, UV treated. Donuts nothing remarkable, but a fine selection of different apples for all taste buds (not u-pick)

Decent Mexican Food in Westchester [split from "LA transplant craving fish tacos"]

Wish you'd spoken to the owner about your experience - she would accept the feedback graciously and would no doubt make amends. While it's not perfect, it's perfectly great for this neck of the woods. I understand the chicken comment - they chop it up in tiny bits so that it cooks fast on the griddle, I imagine. She needs to think through the vegetarian thing (frozen does sound ridiculous) - when our daughters come with their Tex and Mex spouses, the gents always want food from Abuelos. Ladies are veggies, so they've enjoyed the mushroom cheese versions of other dishes. Hopefully, you'll give it another try and talk to the family members who really want to make good food.

Marnie’s Asian Kitchen in Putnam Valley

Alas, this is true! Went there after a hike at Fahnestock, hankering for some noodles. Wishing her well with the catering - this was a hard place to make work economically, I imagine!

Harvest on the Hudson - Do you like the awning?

Was there for lunch on Friday 6/24 and didn't see anything outside but orange (in the planted garden/patio area), and blue umbrellas (parallel to the river). Food was good, as it often is...

Need 62nd anniversary spot that a man with a walker can get into--theatre district

Sardi's seems to be wheelchair accessible. Haven't eaten there for more than decade, so I can't vouch for the food or service.

Midtown lunch ($50/pp, quiet??) West 40's??

Hello - meeting a colleague next week and looking for a relatively quiet place for three to have lunch and not be drowned out by noise. Can go up to $50 a head or so. Thanks for any suggestions you may have!

Thanks,
