I believe that we released a fix for this today--Eng will correct me if I'm wrong--but let us know if you see this happen again, because we think we fixed it. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the heads-up! This is a problem we're aware of--it's happened in the past as well--and have a solution planned that we hope will fix it for good by next week. In the meantime, we're just trying to clean up the duplicates as best we can.

Super Taster Columns- why only videos now?

I do the best I can at weighing in on Site Talk, but you also have my personal email address HillJ, and if something is bothering you this much, you're welcome to email me and I'll try to get back to you. There are definitely limitations to what we're going to discuss on Site Talk. Business decisions aren't really open for public discussion, so sometimes if you don't hear from anyone, it might be because a decision has been made that is not up for debate, so there's nothing concrete to add to the conversation. (This is not a Supertaster-specific response, but just something for everyone to keep in mind in general on Site Talk.)

I'm really glad that our users are so invested in our content that they are up in arms and noticing changes that happen with it. Thanks for being our readers (and possibly, future viewers),

Super Taster Columns- why only videos now?

Hi everyone,

Videos are anything but cheaper and easier! But the truth is that we at CHOW are focusing more and more of our efforts on video for a variety of business-related reasons (not the least of which is that we get more viewers to videos than we do readers to columns). I know that's cold comfort for those of you who enjoy reading the column rather than watching a video, but there are many users whose opinions are being shared not on threads like this, but through the time they spend watching videos on Youtube and on the site as opposed to reading written content. And the flow of traffic is what we spend a lot of time paying close attention to!

Agreed with your assessment, Dave MP (in full disclosure I was one of those dining companions and sharer of the dosa). But question: why do so many restaurants feel they need to do the little iceburg lettuce salad? What's that about? It's such a sad afterthought.

The dessert was a big controversy around the table, and I can't help but notice that you nearly avoided mentioning it. I found it good: I'd describe it as "unthick condensed milk with rice noodles". The texture of it seemed to make others feel squeamish. Do those same people hate tapioca? Perhaps.

Do you delete recipes? Two are no longer in my saved index.

Hello,

I can answer this one. When CHOW first became a website, we licensed a number of recipes from a cookbook publishing house. The contract gave us publishing rights for a certain period of time. Unfortunately, that time expired, so we no longer had the rights to those recipes. I'm sorry that a recipe you loved was removed! Considering that every other recipe on the site is either created by our food team or by our users, we no longer have to worry about this problem.

Restaurants, Linking, and Changes That Are Going Live Today

Hello everyone,

Wanted to bring everyone up to date on changes that are going to be released later today on our site, and then again on Friday.

Today we are removing the restaurant database from the site, which means all restaurant pages are going to disappear. You are also going to notice that links in posts are going to disappear today but DO NOT BE ALARMED. They are coming back on Friday. We need to remove everything today, and then re-release the address information that the links used to provide, which will return and will remain in all posts, on Friday. I repeat, today links are removed from posts, but on Friday you will see those addresses return into the posts, hard-coded (you won't be able to click them).

Are there questions about this? I'll do what I can to keep everyone apprised.

Why Some User Names are Red

Update on this. We're going to tweak this change next week to be a little clearer. Usernames will still be black, but next to the people who work for CHOW will be a small button that looks like a CHOW logo, and it will say CHOW Team when you scroll over it. It is still optional, mind you, so not every admin will show up with the logo. But we would like to move towards a little more transparency in all we do over here, and this is a first step!

Why Some User Names are Red

Hello,

We've been working on a way to clarify the users who work on the site, and starting today, you will notice that some user's names are red when they post. That means they have admin privileges on the CHOW or work for the site. Not every admin will be red--it's a personal choice for users to identify themselves as admins--but I wanted to just let people know why you might see names in red, like mine below!

New Export Tool Soon to Be Available for Restaurant Records

Dear Chowhound community,

A few weeks back, we announced the retirement of the restaurant pages, happening March 20, here on the site. It was met with mixed feelings: confusion (many users did not use the restaurant pages, so were confused about what was being retired), frustration (for people who spent a lot of time updating duplicate and incorrect information, as well as adding their own restaurant finds to the database), and neutrality (some users never used the pages, and didn't mind their removal one bit).

We listened to your feedback, and tried to do what we could to hold on to the information that you spent time putting into the database. We understand that you didn't put the records in the database just to have access to them yourself, but there are also instances where users indicated that being able to recover the data they entered would be helpful.To that end, we have added another export tool to your profile pages. It is called "My Restaurant Records." It is an export of all restaurants that we can confirm were created by you, and will only include records created since the last major update to the design of the Restaurants pages. Again, this tool will benefit the small portion of you who have spent time inputting restaurant records, and it will allow you to retain that information.

It will appear sometime in the next couple of hours. You will see it in your profile under the "Export My Data" tool, at the bottom of the list under "Been There/ Wanna Go."

We are experimenting with the names of our dropdowns to create clarity, and "restaurant reviews" probably didn't do that for Digest. We are going to change that name to "Hot on Chowhound" soon, and hope that will help.

Do you remember if you signed in with that box on the upper right side of the site? And are the newsletters coming to the same address that you use for your user login? I ask because there is a separate newsletter list for email addresses that originate in the upper righthand corner that we are investigating...
