midwestern mom's birthday!

My parents are going to be in SF for Mothers Day and my mom's birthday. I live in NYC, but we are from St Louis, MO. My parents are very midwestern. I want to send them a gift certificate to a restaurant (or other cool experience) so that they will get it when they check into their hotel.

They don't care for Asian food. Also, my dad is deathly allergic to shellfish-- it's okay if the restaurant serves it, but they can't cook it out in the open so that he can smell it. I wanted to get them a gift card to the Stinking Rose, but one of their big menu items is "Sizzling platter of shrimp/scallops/etc." The smell alone would put dad in the hospital. I don't necessarily want a place with a "scene," but I would like them to go somewhere different than what they have in St Louis.

I'm looking to get them a $40 or $50 gift certificate, and I'd like for that amount to cover 2 entrees.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Susan

birthday brunch/lunch for a group in the vicinity of 6th Ave and Spring...

Hi everyone,
I'm having a birthday party in a couple of weeks and really need to send out an invitation! We're going to be doing an activity at 6th avenue and Spring until about 2pm, and then I want to go somewhere with everyone (12-15 people) for brunch/light lunch. Last year we went to the Moondance Diner, which was great-- but I hear it had since closed. I'm looking for something cheap, that can accomodate a big group of us. Any suggestions? This is for a Sunday.

Thank you!

Restaurant Week spot for Vegetarians?

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone here has a recommendation for a good restaurant to go to for Restaurant Week that is vegetarian-friendly? It doesn't have to be exclusively vegetarian, but I would like to have more than one option on the menu.

Thanks!

Good, falafel Union Square, not Rainbow?

I had Maoz for the first time in Philly, then in Barcelona. I was overjoyed when they opened in Union Square... I really think they are delicious. The bar of salads (ESPECIALLY the fried broccoli/cauliflower) is amazing, and the falafel balls are perfect-- just enough green, and not dry at all. I lived in Israel and am pretty picky about falafel-- this is the best I've had since I was there.
