Madrona Tree - Arlington Center

DH and I were there on Labor Day for dinner, and really liked this new place! It might be a little pricier than I was expecting, but I'm also willing to pay a bit more for local, organic produce and humanely raised meats. I had the vegan mini burger wrap, and there was nothing mini about it at all. It was a HUGE and very delicious wrap. DH had a burger and thought it was great but a bit overcooked (though, he prefers rare...). We got sides of fried green tomatoes and onion rings - certainly large enough that we could have easily split one. Both were made with the same breading which was really tasty, and both came with a generous portion of avacado dip. We also saw another table with fries which I'll definitely get on a return visit - they looked like freshly made steak fries. It was also a cute little place and I love that they have outside seating.

Any experience with these Portsmouth, NH area caterers?

I'm bumping this in the hopes that someone has experience with one of these caterers. Thanks!

Any experience with these Portsmouth, NH area caterers?

Hello all! I live just outside Boston but am getting married in Portsmouth, NH this August. Like everyone else in this economy I'm trying to get good value for my dollar. I want a delicious but well priced buffet for my casual, outdoor wedding reception (approx 100 people). I'm looking at four caterers and am wondering if anyone has worked with these caterers and could give me some feedback.

Portable Pantry
Blue Mermaid
Pesce Blue (Della Terra Catering)
Mizuna (World Class Catering)

If there are other recommendations I'm all ears.
Thanks!

Inexpensive, good, vegetarian friendly restaurant in the south end?

Addis Red Sea on Tremont might work for you. It probably won't blow your mind, but its good, inexpensive, and very veg friendly. I suppose it really depends on your definition of "inexpensive".

Vegetarian Tasting Menu

Oleana is my favorite veg tasting menu (better even than L'Espalier) but Ten Tables is a close second. T.W. Food was very good as well with a very inventive menu.

Clover Food Truck in Dewey Square (South Station)

I was there again on Tuesday for a popover (it was tasty, but a bit underdone) and Thursday for another excellent BBQ seitan. I also tried the potato and tempeh salad which was basically standard potato salad with tempeh that tasted like bacon. I guess that's what they use on the soy BLT sandwich. I also noticed that they have new hours - Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm.

Clover Food Truck in Dewey Square (South Station)

Its in the area near South Station where the farmer's market is. Between Atlantic and Purchase streets. Across from the Dunkin Donuts, on the grass.

Clover Food Truck in Dewey Square (South Station)

I LOVE Clover! Great addition to the neighborhood. I got a breakfast sandwich the first week which was a soft boiled egg, cheddar, and tomato in wheat pita. I think they use wheat pita for all their sandwiches. Can't wait to try the muffins, granola, oatmeal, and popovers!

For lunch, The BBQ seitan was awesome. I was worried that it would be very BBQ-y, but it had just the right amount of sauce with a tiny bit of heat, some lettuce, tomato, and cheese (I think there was melted cheese, it could have been mayo). The rosemary fries were fantastic, and even better was that I saw the potato being cut, then put into the fryer, then served to me hot and fresh. The chickpea sandwich was very good and reminded me of a falafel. The quinoa salad (with almonds and golden raisins) was fine, but a bit bland. Also on the menu were 3 other sandwiches: Soy BLT, Egg and Eggplant, and Pimento. I know there were 4 salads, but can't remember all the details. Other than the quinoa there was roasted carrot, fennel and something, and Greek couscous. All sandwiches were $5 and salads and fries were $3. I believe drinks (iced tea, lemonade etc) were $2.

Best Veggie Burger in Boston

Highland Kitchen makes a fantastic black bean burger. Here are some other options: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/622995?tag=boards;topic-622995

Jerry Remy's Sports Bar & Grill Fenway

I was there on Saturday for lunch with a large group (14 of us). The location is good, it has a nice view of Fenway, they have a great selection of beer and the bartender and our waitress were very friendly. Most of us ordered burgers and everyone said they were fine but nothing special and all cooked exactly the same way, there was a pasta dish that was just kind of "blah", and the veggie burger was ok, but nothing special. The fries were pretty good and seemed fresh. However, every single person at the table asked for their burger without the "BoSauce" (ie: Thousand Island dressing) and every burger came with it. The service was extremely slow even though at the time we were there it wasn't busy yet. They also had a hard time serving all the food and making sure the correct meals came out of the kitchen to our table - the last couple burgers were served several minutes after everyone else had their meals. They also forgot a couple drinks which people finally just gave up on. I'm not inclined to go back, especially with a large group.

Mid-priced North End for group of 10

I'm in search of a mid-priced, North End (must be N. End), classic red sauce (or at least with a variety of classic, non-edgy options) restaurant that will take a reservation for 10 adults on a Saturday night (many of them very tall, so nothing with low ceilings or small tables please). Something between Mama Maria and Antico Forno in price. From searching the boards, I think one of these may work? Lucca, Artu, Marco, Taranta, Carmen, Monica's, L'Osteria. I'm open to other suggestions as well. Thanks!

Can I bring hummus on a plane?? Please help!!

I'm not sure if this is an option, but can you buy some bread and make a hummus sandwich? I've brought those on board without issue in the past.

Vegetarian Hot Dogs

The OP didn't ask for a "healthier" hotdog (which could have encompased chicken or turkey dogs as well), but a vegetarian one. However, Smart Dogs are much lower in fat and calories, so its really up to the OP what he is looking for. Many hotdogs are not as healthy as the Applegate Farms one.

In for three days, can't figure out what 'neighborhood' Hotel Intercontinental is in -- help?

You are also very close to the Fort Point neighborhood and a short walk from Sportello and Drink which could make for a great dinner/drinks combo.

Vegetarian Hot Dogs

I did try grilling the Smart Dogs - they weren't as successful. If I remember correctly, they didn't cook evenly and parts got very bubbly and burned (and not in a good way). There is another brand that comes in green packaging that I've had that grilled very well. If I can find them, I'll post the name. The fact that they were in green packaging makes me think they were Morningstar Farms brand, but I could be mistaken.

Vegetarian Hot Dogs

I usually buy Smart Dogs because they are fairly tasty and seem to be the most healthy. I also like Yves "Good Dogs" and have been told they have a taste scarily similar to real hot dogs, though the texture is a bit different. You can also grill the "Good Dogs" with decent results.

Bachelorette Party Suggestions? Never been to Boston...help

I attended a fun bachelorette with similarly aged ladies at Stella in the South End and it worked out really well. http://bostonstella.com/ I've done something similar at Rocca as well. Both are close enough to 28 Degrees (mentioned by kitsune) that you could take a short cab ride for drinks before or after. I've never eaten at 28 Degrees and can't comment on the food, though the atmosphere is perfect for a bachelorette.

Great vegetarian options in the South End?

This link may give you some ideas: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/487151 In the South End, Rocca or Hamersley's might be good options.

Cambridge Common - Wow, what a terrible hamburger.

I'm in the tater tots and beer camp for Cambridge Common, but the homemade veggie burger (not the other one) at Christopher's is one of my favorite in the area.

2010 CSA Choice

Parker Farm does deliveries to Central Sq, Porter Sq and Davis Sq. He downsized the number of shareholders for this year, but from the last email he sent to shareholders, it looks like there may still be some left: http://web.mac.com/parkerfarm/iWeb/Site/About%20Parker%20farm.html

New Years Eve Dinner

I spent last NYE at the Blue Room and it was really fantastic. There were 6 of us, so we weren't looking for romantic, but we did see several tables of 2. I believe they offered the regular menu, and I'm a vegetarian and was pleased with my options. The atmosphere was festive, food excellent, and we weren't rushed. We did take the T, and I believe it was about a 10-15 minute walk from Kendall.

Just Curious - Turkey Prices Paid

We just picked ours up from Wilson Farms - $2.59/lb.

Vegetarian in Hawaii (Oahu, Big Island, Maui)

Good to know, thanks! I'm sure we'll hit Downtown in the next couple days.

Vegetarian in Hawaii (Oahu, Big Island, Maui)

Thanks! Town sounds great, but I'm having a hard time finding a website online that will show me where they are, or a menu. I think I found Town (a link to make reservations but little information), but not Downtown.

I'm sure we'll be doing Vietnamese and Thai as well.

Vegetarian in Hawaii (Oahu, Big Island, Maui)

Thanks for the Honolulu recommendations! Are there any for Maui or the Big Island?

Best Quick, Fresh Breakfast Sandwich/Burrito/Wrap Downtown - and it is definitely NOT Boloco!

The egg and cheese at Yada Yada on Farnsworth (around the corner from Metro) is good and inexpensive. i get mine with tomato, not bacon, but I know bacon is an option. http://www.yadacafe.com/.

Vegetarian in Hawaii (Oahu, Big Island, Maui)

Next week I'll be visiting Hawaii for the first time. Hooray! I'll be staying in Oahu (Honolulu), Big Island (Kona area), and Maui (Hana and Wailea). I'll have a car and hope to see as much of the islands as possible. I haven't found much written recently about vegetarian options, so I was hoping for some good recommendations. I did find this link in another post http://www.vsh.org/index.html, but I'm hoping to find out what's good, not just what is available. Dairy and eggs are ok, but seafood is not. Also, no Indian, please.

Another question... I'll be traveling with a non-vegetarian who would like to experience the island cuisines, so would I be able to find anything at a plate lunch kind of place?

Thank you!

CSA Fail?

The Parker Farm large shares will begin again next week, and small shares will be on a sign-up basis with two more for the season. More details are at the link above.

Board favorite restaurant veggie burgers?

Friday night I went to Four Burgers in Central Sq. The veggie burger was really good! It was a tasty, mostly black bean patty and held together very well. It reminded me a bit of a Dr. Praegers California burger meets black bean burger. The fries were also fresh and good - I loved that you could get half regular fries, half sweet potato. It was $30 for two burgers, tons of fries, and a couple beers. The cookie we got for dessert wasn't very good, but I'd go back for burgers and beer. Very pleasantly surprised!
