Best free bread in NYC restaurants?

I like Maloney and Porcelli's. I haven't been there in a while, but always loved their variety, including crackers and mini pretzels. I also like Calle Ocho. They serve fattening little biscuits, warm and yummy.

Shea Stadium Eats

Hello!
I am heading to Shea Stadium tomorrow for the 7PM Mets game. Is there anything good to eat inside besides hot dogs and beer? I am wondering if I need to smuggle in semi-healthy and tasty sandwich to get me through the event (can you tell I am not a huge baseball fan?)
Thanks!

Lazzara's Pizza Cafe - Pizza Question

Lazzara's at 38th Street - do they sell their grandma pizza by the slice? As in 'take out?" Not sure if it is just a sit down restaurant. Thanks!

Di Fara's for Lunch on a Wednesday

Hello all,

I know there are oodles of posts on Chowhound about this place. Long lines, crazy waits, plus everyone butts in line pretending to be a special friend of the pizza man. Regardless, how crazy do you think it will be at lunch, on a Wednesday? I hope to (gasp) order a whole pie!!! Will it take hours??
Thanks!

Anyone tried Merkato 55 yet?

I am heading here tonight with a friend. There are only two of us so we won't be able to try a ton of dishes. Anyone esle been here in the last few days? I would love to hear more about the menu.
Thanks!

Good Vegan Bakery in Manhattan?

Thanks, I do enjoy Babycakes, wish it was closer! Lifethyme is actually a health food store with freshly prepared food, so I am wondering if there are other health food stores on UWS (preferably) that make desserts that are healthful. Thanks!

Good Vegan Bakery in Manhattan?

Hello all,
I am a huge fan of the vegan desserts at Lifethyme in the Village, at 8th and 6th Avenue. They make the best organic/vegan treats like berry cornbread and raspberry chocolate chip cookies, to name a few.
Are there any more places like this in the city? I am especially wondering if there is anything like this on the UWS, as I am moving there in a few months and am already dreading the loss of my weekly fix at Lifethyme :(
Thanks!

Clean vegetarian Indian restaurant for two

Hello! My husband and I want to hit a vegetarian Indian restaurant in NYC, preferably below 30th Street. We eat Indian about twice a year, so we are not hard core with the cuisine. My head is spinning with all the reviews of Madras Cafe, Saravanaas, etc - what would you suggest that is clean and has a bit of ambience? I am pretty simple - good bread, some dahl, maybe a nice biranyi, and a few other basic dishes that are well executed. Thanks!

Pepian Sauce

I had this at Festival Mexicano - a hole in the wall (though delicious) little mexican joint on the Lower East Side. Try the chicken soup - very good!

Zen Palate Union Square - Cafe vs Upstairs?

Hello friends,
Anyone been to Zen Palate Union Square lately? I want to take an out of town guest, however reviews here and on menupages are not stellar. Then I saw that the upstairs cafe gets better reviews, even though I like the menu at the cafe better. Can anyone give me some up-to-date feedback? Just to note, I have been to almost all the vegetarian restaurants in the city so please do not try to push me to try another - I already have!!! Zen Palate has alluded me, and I always like to try out a new place.

Casual dining West Village.

If you want a fun, affordable, lively atmosphere I would try Cowgirl. Good margaritas, chips and guac. It is on Hudson right by W 10th. Mexicana Mama is a few doors up Hudson if you want more authentic Mexican.

How long will I wait at Di Fara's this Saturday, Sept 29?

Here is info on the Oyster Festival:
Shuck: Stone Street Oyster Festival
12pm-? Sat Sep 29, outside Ulysses
58 Stone St, at Hanover Sq
This massive annual fest shucks up Blue Points on the half shell, fried, and in stew, plus cold pints and live bands. Tickets must be purchased for drinks/mollusks, but admission's free, giving you the option of strolling around ostentatiously devouring a steaming slice of pizza, just to be a jerk.
More info at swiftbarnyc.com.

How long will I wait at Di Fara's this Saturday, Sept 29?

Wow - thanks every body. The video on Di Fara's was great, it helped me to "understand" the situation, I had no idea it was a hole in the wall. I have now decided to go early, noon will be much better. There is also an Oyster Festival in Brooklyn so I will hit that as well. Finally I will top it all off with a visit to Baked in Red Hook, which I have been dying to try ever since I first saw the owner make his sweet n salty cake on Martha Stewart Show. I will report back if my stomach doesn't explode.

LOS DADOS in the meatpacking

This review seems really harsh - was it really that bad? Anyone else try Los Dados? They have a takeout only taqueria which I want to try, since I live close by. I love Mexican, and they have organic food on the menu, which is a double bonus in my book. Please, someone else, give me some positive feedback!!!

How long will I wait at Di Fara's this Saturday, Sept 29?

Fellow Chowhounds: I plan to head over to Di Fara's in Brooklyn early to get a full pie with one other person (so we will be requesting a table for two.) How long will I have to wait? I can go early, get there around 5:30PM. Any advice greatly appreciated!

No I haven't, so I will definitely give them a try. Thanks!

Where can I get organic turkey in the Village?

My newest endeavor is to eat more organic poultry (chicken and turkey.) I can find some organic chicken at Whole Foods or Lifethyme Market. I have had no luck finding organic raw turkey, not WHOLE turkeys, but cutlets or ground turkey to make burgers. Thanks!

Murray's Bagels On 8th Ave near 21st/22d st

Best bagels in the neighborhood are Hudson Bagels, down on Hudson around Christopher and West 10th. Great texture, a bit salty, but sweet - delicious. The oatmeal wheat one is particularly divine.

Special occasion: Le Bernadin, WD-50 or Union Square

I ate at Union Square on Saturday night for a special occasion - I took my out of town guest there. The place was just too ordinary, they didn't "get it" - after hearing all the hype they just expected more (and so did I, and I have eaten there before!) Service was not great, though pleasant, just things were forgotten, including us, as we sat without even a drink order for over fifteen minutes.

Disappointing Bialy at Kossar's?

How are the bagels at Kossar's? I was planning on making a pilgrimage down there, since they just won the best bagel award from the Zagats Shopping Guide. Are they worth the trip? My favorite bagels are Hudson Bagels in the West Village. I do not like Murray's in Chelsea very much, not worth the hype.

Does anybody recommend Bonobo's

I have eaten there, it seems fine, not too exciting. They have a salad bar with pick your toppings, which are mostly organic. They make uncooked "pates" - which are blended nuts like sunflower seeds, walnuts, with herbs like dill - pretty tasty. They also have salads like broccoli salad or carrot/sesame salad - pretty tasty. I had some raw desserts, made with agave sugar and sesame seeds - all raw, not worth the price, or the calories, in my opinion. Overall, food was good, but not worth the price, and I was missing some hard core protein - I know nuts have some protein but not enough, I don't want to eat a ton of nuts due to all the fat. I much prefer Lifethyme Market, which has raw food, an organic food bar, and organic/vegan baked good, which are the best! I am lactose intolerant so I have started trying vegan desserts to satisfy my sweet tooth, and I am a convert - love love their raspberry tollbooth cookie - heavenly. Please someone out there agree with me!

Sushi with Brown Rice?

Sakura Hana in the West Village will make you sushi with brown rice. This place is a hidden gem, so affordable, fresh - the menu is not huge, so you know that they just focus on what they do best. Floyd is the head sushi chef and manager there, such a nice guy, it is overall a lovely neighborhood place. It is right near Piccolo Angolo, on Hudson near Jane.
