If I'm going to have only 1 green chili cheeseburger, which one?
In Santa Fe or Albuquerque? I've read the posts on this board but need more current, more concise info, please.
Lunch on or near W. 181st St?
Looking for something good. Anything good. Anything not very bad, Anything.
What's Your "Go To" Restaurant in the Rockland Area?
The best Indian restaurant in the area is Karavali in the shopping strip at the rear of the Nanuet (empty) Mall. The menu is large and has several dishes rarely seen in the US, including a dish from the Indian Jewish community (yes, there is one).
I am still on a great breakfast search. How about strawberry place in nyack?
Strawberry Place has a large selection of omelets, pancakes and other breakfast entrees, some of them fairly creative. They are usually made well, but can take some time to receive, especially on weekend mornings when the lines extend onto the sidewalk. Service is usally brisk but still friendly. The coffee is good.
American Dream Diner Blauvelt NY
The violations were all about paperwork and had nothing to do with any health threat, real or imagined.
Ropa Vieja??? HELP!!!
I second San Juan Cafe in Nyack, and San Juan Restaurant in New City (opened by the former owners of San Juan Cafe) for ropa viejo. San Juan Cafe only has it on Mondays and San Juan Restaurant has it only on one day, too, but I'm not sure which one. Both places use the same recipe.
Breakfast near 1100 Sherbrook St. West
My 14-year-old son (a fairly adventurous eater) and I will be in Montreal for a few days next week. I've been reading the posts here for a while and have gathered lots of good recommendations (thank you!), but I have not yet figured out breakfast other than going to the Jean Talon market (a bit of a hike from our hotel but worth in at least twice I figure). What I'm still looking for is a decent (or better) place to get breakfast close to our hotel at the address above. Any suggestions?
Indian/Pakistani in the Bronx
Lydig Ave. is one of the greast undiscovered food strips in NYC. In addition to Rawal Ravali and the boureks, there is an old-fashioned kosher bread etc. retail shop that has the best potato kugel I've had in ages. I wish I could remember the name, but it is on the south side of Lydig, across the street and slightly east of Rawal.
Indian/Pakistani in the Bronx
Desi-Sawad's goat curry is my default lunch whenever I can get out to eat lunch. The meat is always falling-off-the-bone tender and the curry very rich. Vegetable dishes are also very good, especially a recent okra and onion combination they occasionally have.
Indian/Pakistani in the Bronx
On the other side of Lydig Ave. from Rawal Ravi there is an old-style Jewish bakery that is a throwback to an earlier, more hamish era when bread was bread and kugel was kugel. Very worth checking out. I highly recommend the potato kugel.
Indian/Pakistani in the Bronx
On Starling Ave., a couple of blocks east of Castle Hill Ave., there are two steam-table Pakistani places that have good to occasionally very good food. Neither has a regular menu and the selection changes daily. I usually get take-out from Desi Sawad, the one further west of the two, but only because it is a shorter walk on my limited lunch hour.
Easter Brunch In or Around Nyack?
Restaurant X's (in Congers) brunch is reputed to be excellent. In Nyack, La Fontana (on Broadway) has a large buffet for brunch.
Dinner in Nyack
In Nyack I'd recommend Hudson House for American/Continental (and especially dessert) or Lanterna Tuscan. But neither is as good as Restaurant X in Congers.
A Decision Finally
X is a wonderful choice. The food and service are both excellent. As for dress, smart casual (though I'm not sure what that really means) is the minimum. I would not be uncomfortable there wearing nice jeans, but I would not be uncomfortable there in a tuxedo.
They have a variety of cheese offerings including a three cheese plate, a five cheese plate and an extravagant larger cheese plate. Consult with your waiter. Every server there seems knowledgeable and flexible.
Enjoy your birthday!
I've got a smoked boneless leg of lamb. What do I do with it?
I bought a smoked boneless leg of lamb on a whim and now I have to serve it for dinner. Its in my refrigerator. What do I do with it? How do I prepare it? Help, please.
Rockland County chow?
Sure, I remember the Hillcrest Deli and the kosher butcher shop that was in the same strip mall. I'm not a Rockland native, but it always has seemed to me that Hillcrest was a neighborhood, not a town. In any event, Vietnam Restaurant is where you say it is and worth the trip.
Remembering Early Microbreweries
Twenty years ago, Sept. 1987 to be precise, I was asked to speak to the National Microbrewers Conferenceon the topic of "A Restaurateur's View of Microbrews." The gist of my speech was that microbrewers had to be extremely careful about quality control and to sell only within a geographic area in which they could manage the rotation of product.
My exact words were, "when someone has a bad bottle of Budweiser -- and it does happen every now and then -- they say, 'man, what a bad Bud; let me try another.' But when that same drinker has a bad bottle of any mocrobrew he says, 'microbrews suck! I'll never try another!'"
Fortunately, there were enough brewers making high quality beers that were consumed when fresh that the category did not die off, but I think it was seriously damaged by those bad bottles that occurred far too often.
Remembering Early Microbreweries
If I recall correctly, Owades was more of a contract consultant than an employee brewmaster. In my days as a pubkeeper, I once flew with Matt Reich to Utica to meet with Owades at the Matt brewery to taste a couple of New Amsterdam line extensions Owades had been doing test brews for. If I remember correctly, none of them set my senses on fire.
And when last heard from, Reich was the chief operating officer of Tom Cat Bakery, an artisan bread house.
Rockland County chow?
Yes, its in Spring Valley on Rt. 45 (otherwise known as N. Main St.)
Greek supermarkets in area?
While not specifically Greek, Yarnush on Central Avenue in White Plains carries many Greek (as well as Lebanese, etc.) items.
rockland county new york
There isn't any good Chinese in Nyack (and not much in the whole county), but there are two good Thai restaurants. The King & I on Main St. and Thai House on Park St. (in an old train-car style diner that is a decorating marvel inside) both have extensive vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus. Thai House recently had a change in ownership and a recent meal there was somewhat disappointing. I am not sure if either are open on Christmas Day, but you could call. Thai House (845) 358-9100. King & I (845) 358-8588.
Saigon, in Spring Valley, is a bare-bones restaurant with delicious food, gracious service and low prices. (845) 352-4610.
12/25 dinner, but not Christmassy?
NY hounds arriving in DC Christmas day and are looking for somewhere to have dinner, but definitely do not want a "Christmas Dinner." We love ethnic foods, have a car, and are willing to travel to the burbs for something worthwhile (and we know almost all the worthwhile ethnic places are in the burbs). Vegetarian option is a must; totally vegetarian is okay, too. Other than that, the only requirement is that they be open.
All suggestions appreciated.
Where to buy RUBASHKIN’S AARON’S BEST turkey in northern NJ?
I do9n't know anywhere in northern NJ, but in Rockland County, NY you can get this at Monsey Kosher Supernarket
Good eats near Blythedale Children's Hospital?
Its been a couple of years, but I did my student teaching at Blythedale Children's Hospital School and I'd occasionally eat in the hospital's staff cafeteria. It wasn't fantastic, but it usually was better than any cafeteria food Ive had anywhere other than the south. The service staff is friendly and helpful and the prices are very good. There are some nice seats near the big picture windows.
