When is a patty melt not a patty melt? (moved from CA)

Being a great fan of the Patty Melt, I would expect just as you described as in the first part of your post. I would have been VERY dissapointed had I received what you did. The bread needs to be of the correct texture and thicjness as well as grilled with butter. Attached is a pic of the best patty melt I have had, good jucy meat (not cooked well done) swiss cheese (I know it looks yellow but it really was swiss) and grilled onions. The place is Max's diner in the Bay Area. That all I ever order there!

Anniversary Dinner Lake Tahoe

MY favorite place in the South Shore area is Mirabelle French Restaurant. You can have really well prepared food and get a steak too! Here is the menu. http://www.mirabelletahoe.com/menus_d...
We always go there for special dinners, have been since they opened 7 years ago.

Best Chinese Restaurant in Reno?

Just check with Jazmine if they will ne open Xmas eve, and Sorry they are closed, so you would have to pick somethig else. I would guess the Golden Fortune in The Eldorado would be open, and is nice.

Best Chinese Restaurant in Reno?

Yes, I have experienced Jewish Xmas eve, eating Chinese food! It was in the bay area so seems like a more widespread thing then I thought at the time. I was invited by a Jewish friend and didn't happen to have anything going on that night. Chinese food, never wooda thought of that....Anyhow on to Chinese food in Reno. This all depends on the type of experience you might be looking for. Fancy and cost not a problem within reason, I would pick Jazmine. The place is very nice inside and elegent, the waiters speak english fine (they should, the're white guys), and the food is actually very good. The downside might be it is a little more expensive then what most might have in mind when thinking of Chinese food. This is not take out fast food, sweet and sour everything, deep fried meat candy. The flavors are complex, sutle and presented in that neuveu California elegent style, (you know, entree on top of lettuce leaf on black square plate, kinds thing..) My office group went there for our Xmas lunch (boss was paying), and the whole experience was exceptionally great. Everybody commented they hadn't had Chinese food like that before. They have many things that would not offend the Jewish diner. Chef Quoc will make things that are not on the menu by request. Price per person might be $20-$30 per person, but will be a meal to remember, assumomg 6-10 people. One thing, you might check and see if they will be open that day.
Now on the other hand if you would like not as fancy a place and that might serve more authentic Chinese food, I would suggest China East at the corner of S. Virgina. and Vassar. I know this place should be open. Not as fancy and the prices per personmight be 40% less then Jazmine. Its a real family kind of place and the food is very good there. They have all the normal favorites and also so real chinese food in the back of the menu. They do a killer Peking or roast duck! The price per person for a nice dinner here might be about $12- 18$ per, given a party of 6-10.
Thers my suggestions foe a special dinner, as there are lots of places that would do for more casual occasions.

Reno Chinese Bakery "Honey Bakery"

OK, I just went to the bakery on my way back from Truckee. I ordered one pork bun to try, hoping that the picture on the blog was true, (actually, why wouldn't it be?). Anyhow, my first bite into it revealed a much improved pork filling to bun ratio! Yes, it does look just like the picture. I asked if they had increased the portions, and was told yes they did. The reason given for the small amounts before, was that was al the meat they could fit on in the dough ball before baking. The solution found, was to let the dough rise an additional hour or so, so the dough would be larger and thus cover the filling. I think the process looks like meat on a pancake and then rolled up in a ball. Whatever the reason, I'm very happy to have a good source of local pork buns. I just had to pick up some of those custard tarts while I was there too!

Need GOOD restaurant rec. for Carson City area...

Ti Amo at the Fandango is nice. It looks better inside then on the outside being that it is a casino. Z Bistro may be too casual for what you have in mind, although the food is not. But a mom might want ambiance if she is not a foodie. DW's is nice , food is good and has ambiance.

Has anybody tried the pork buns lately? I saw Johnathan's blog about the place and saw the pics of the pork buns. When some of us went when it first opened, the filling was a little on the light side (not much), but the latest pics seem to look like a better pork to bun ratio. More filling would definitly bring me back, I'll drive from Carson so I don't have to go to Sac.

Carson City- Viet Pho Closed

Viet Pho on North Carson (395) has now closed. I guess pho was not as popular down here in Carson as it seems to be in Reno, judging by the number of pho places in Reno. I think the only place to get pho style noodle soup dishes is Mei's Diner 248 E Winnie Ln
Carson City.(775) 883-4303
When I was there last (Mei's) there didn't seem to be a lot of customers either. The pho with duck is killer. The owner said he was trying to sell the place, so I'm not sure how much longer this place might be open.

New Italian Resto in Carson City

B'Sghetti's is just that, ok for what it is. Its a little too kid friendly at times, the scheeaching and all. I actually know the owner there, and like you say, fine for what it is, just not my fav. Girabaldi's is ok, but the chef seems to drift sometimes on his dishes, being kinda fusion with Ital - Asian thing going on. This place is ok, if you are looking for that experience. Some of the servers on the other hand, could use some training in people skills. The staff may have changed at this point. Nothing really against this place either, just not my first choice. If I were to pick my faves in Carson it would be The Basil (Thai), Z Bistro (sort of French), and Washoe Flats Steakhouse (the old Cattlemans but better). Italian I would go to Reno, Luciano's.

Ahh, forgot the most important part...Name: Ti Amo Italian Grill. It is located inside the Casino Fandango in the front area. Friday and Sat. evenings there might be a wait for a table ...maybe 15-20min.

New Italian Resto in Carson City

Well, at least as close to a real Italian resto as we have here...
I think this place still has a few kinks to work out. The food is pretty nice. I had the roasted pork chop($18.00), very tender, the sauce was a bit too tart for my taste. Standard garlic mashed, but the saute spinich was left in the steamer too long and was that olive green color not the bright green it should be. This could be fixed by not cooking the spinich till it is needed. The ceasar salad that it came with seemed like the dressing had a mayonaise base...not a good thing. My wife had the chicken cannolli ($14.00) which she said was good but not the best. They also offer pizza here, but we didn't try it, although it look OK.
The service was really bad as the staff seemed untrained and really to young to be working a place like this. ie. the many of the servers had to get an older staff member to serve the liquor as they were not 21 yet. l I notice thay only had the young good looking servers in the place and all the older and not so good looking were working the buffet. I guess the better tips go the the better looking and maybe not the most competant servers.
The decor did not seem to match the less formal experiance they were trying to provide in the place. In other words, the place looked very nice and formal and romantic but the dress of the staff looked like TGI Friday's or Applebees's. They were of that age range too. The jerseys of the servers looked like rugby jerseys with broad red and white horizontal strips, I guess to look like the gondola pushers in Italy. All of this just seemed like a contrast in the atomosphere of what Ti Amo is trying to achieve.
So, if you just go for the food and dont' pay too much attention to the dining room or servers dress, then I guess the place is passable. We really don't have anything comparable to this place in Carson City. Reno, that would be a different story. The price seemed reasonable for what you got, food and service....not a great deal but not really a rip either. I say try it at least once and you decide. I would go back and try some other things on the menu. I know all you Reno chows might not come to Carson just to eat, but just in case you were in the neighborhood....and they do open for lunch!

Oh, OK I know where you were...its the little campground and gas station on HWY89 just 1/2 mile past the 88/89 (Woodfords) intersection on the right. There is a porch and picnic tables. The burgers are handmade not frozen and used to be made by two little old ladies, I think they are retired now. The place is locally famous for the burgers. Maybe Woodfords Station Campground? Can't miss it, its on the right just after the Woodfords intersection on the way to markleeville.

Prime Spot - new place in Oakland -Grand Ave.

Yes, there is a bar area with a big screen TV. I think the people at the bar were watching football. My wife got a house Merlot. Since my mom was there and she doesn't drink and was paying for the dinner, we didn't do too much drinking. I think it is a full bar as somewhere on the wine list there were listed various mixed drinks of the type that are popular these days, Mohito, and various flavored martinis. I'm really not too much of a wine person, so I might not be the best one to ask. I enjoy food mostly without drinks, not that I have anything againt it, just a personal pref. Check out the food, like to see what others thought.

Prime Spot - new place in Oakland -Grand Ave.

Well, 3 of us gave the place a try on Saturday night, opening night. I think we were the first real paying customers as the rest of the people in the place seemed to be friends of the family and owners. Yes, I miss Mikado, but hey life goes on. I ordered the blackened prime rib ($17.95) 11 oz. (seemed bigger), my wife ordered chicken piccada ($12.95) and my mother ordered the baby back ribs half slab ($9.75). The prime rib was very good and I would reccommend it. It was cooked prefect as ordered (medium) very tender and good spices on the blackening. Interesting blend of spices. We all tasted each others dishes. The chicken was a little slow coming out, which might be expected on opening night, so they comped a ceasar salad. The dressing definitly was house made, very light and just the right amount of garlic and anchovy. The ribs were surprisingly good and tender. I usually would not get ribs at a non rib specific place, but thats what my mother wanted. Ribs were on the sweeter side but not overly, and pulled off the bone just right. Rib meat should not "fall " off the bone. Not your typical BBQ flavor, more of an Asain influence. After we arrived more diners arrived. I noticed a few poeple looking in the window, maybe expecting a sushi place. Mikado I think has been closed for a while. To sum up, this place is definitly worth a try. I hope they can make a go of it. And if you don't like it, at least you gave it a try! Thats why we have lots of places to try! Parking can be a bit of a pain, but hey this is the Bay Area.

Left Bank - Pleasant Hill - bad service

Does everybody or most people have the same bad experience in service as I did with the Left Bank chain? Reading many of the various reviews here and on Yelp, it seems to be an ongoing problem there. We had a party of 6 and maybe only 1/3 capacity of the dining area filled. The orders were mis ordered from the kitchen by our server (wrong food) and the server seemd to disappear for long periods at a time. The food was actually passable, I had the Lamb sandwich, the berger looked good as did the ravoli. The bill was presented, but then she never came back to process the credit card! Enough was enough, so we just left cash. We will not go to the Left Bank again. Well, unless its business and the boss is paying!!

David Wally's resto is very nice but not really child friendly for 6 years and below. Most of the restos right in Genoa are of the adult romantic varity. You will need to go to Carson or Minden. You can try Wasabi's Sushi in Minden if you like Japanese food. They have a sushi bar, but that would not be child friendly, but table service would be fine.
