Charlotte in a day...

Thanks Lynnlato - I'll check out the menu for Carpe Diem and Andrew Blairs!

Charlotte in a day...

Yes, will have a car, and staying in uptown charlotte. It will be 2 of us ladies - we like our cocktails, and love great food. I don't mind a loud atmostphere if the food is great, and don't mind a quiet formal setting either, if the food is great. We are both adventurous eaters as well (except bugs - I won't go there). Even though I know the hole in the walls are often excellent, I'm not looking for that at this dinner. Thanks!!

Charlotte in a day...

Will be in town for a weekend and I get to pick one of the dinners out. Does anyone have a suggestion? - I'm flexible on ambiance. I'm considering: Bonterra, Fig Tree, Soul Gastro Lounge, Blue.... Any help would be appreciated.

Am I the only one who peeks at the online menu prior to visiting a restaurant?

haha - Macca - you have a word mispelled in your post. I was beginning to wonder WHAT kind of Chinese restaurants you were going to???

Popcorn - I do this all the time - even if it's a place I've been to before. You never know if they'll have new items on the menu!

Any good pizza in Athens, GA?

Any other suggestions for a good lunch outside of town? (neither of us are UGA alumni so we want to avoid the bars & restaurants that will be packed for the game that afternoon.)

Any good pizza in Athens, GA?

Good point about the football game!
What about Transmetropolitan? Any good? Do they have a 2nd location that is not downtown?

Any good pizza in Athens, GA?

Heading there for the afternoon this Saturday. Looking for a good place for thin crust pizza (pls- no chains). Bischero comes up a lot on this board, but it looks like they might be closed from 2:30 - 5pm on saturdays (or is this old info)? We'll be having a late lunch so looking for something that will be open all afternoon. Thanks!

Best Mexican Fare in Atlanta

Nuevo Laredo Cantina - Chattahoochee Ave. I get the Tacos de Carne Asada every time.

This started happening for me again, on the Manhattan board. Running IE v.6

nutella recipes?

Roll out pizza dough. Spread on a whole jar of Nutella, and some sliced bananas. Roll into cylinder shape, and bake!

First time in Georgia and at the Big Pig Jig - suggestions?

If you have the time, and a car, maybe you could do your own BBQ food tour of the city?
The ones I've listed are in and around the Atlanta area:
- Swallow at the Hollow (Great food, esp. ribs - you could also get tickets to a live show with country songwriters performing)
- Harolds - (people love it, but I think it's dry)
- Rolling Bones BBQ
- Daddy Dz's
- Pig-N-Chik (not your typical BBQ joint as far as appearances go, but I really like theirs)
- Williamson Bros. Bar-B-Q

First time in Georgia and at the Big Pig Jig - suggestions?

I was part of a cookteam for the BPJ last year. It was great fun, and a nonstop tailgate party! However, it's not that great for a visitor who isn't part of a team. (went for the first time as a visitor, second time as a cookteam for that reason alone). The teams are not allowed to sell their BBQ, but that first year, we did find a few teams who gave us some samples. Most teams fill their booths with friends, so it's almost like a bunch of private parties everywhere. In the area where you can buy food, there were one or two vendors selling BBQ, but it was very mediocre. Try to make friends and crash some of the parties instead! (If I was entering this year, I'd invite you over!)

What are some fun cupcake flavors you have made?

Simple vanilla/yellow/white cake, but the kicker is some Nutella as the icing! Delicious!

Expectations of food costs in Italy

I've been from Positano to Northern Lake Como, and I've found that it's only as expensive as you want to make it. Drinking the "house" wine at some of the restaurants will get you something better than many mid-range wine in the US restaurants. Also, the touristy spots (around a major piazza or a restaurant mentioned in the Zagat guide or something) will get you touristy prices. Go to some of the local spots where they really cook with their heart and you get a great meal. I guess it all depends on your definition of "finer restaurants". IMHO, the local spots in Italy are far better than some of the finest restaurants in the US serving Italian.

HELP!- Les Fleur De Lis Cafe in Atlanta

Have you been, and do you recommend it for a birthday dinner?
Also, anyone know the website so I can take a look at the menu? It's listed everywhere as www.lesfleursdeliscafe.com, but it's not correct.
Thanks!

Just One Dinner in Atlanta

Woodfire Grill and Murphy's are not upscale or stuffy. I second the recommendation for Floataway Cafe. I also like The Food Studio - www.thefoodstudio.com and Rathbuns www.rathbunsrestaurant.com .
The teen doesn't have to be "dressed up" to go to any of these places. Just presentable and cleaned up :)

Tipping on Wine (moved from Wine board)

I always think of the wine as part of the food bill, and tip 20% on the whole bill.
However, if I'm sitting at the bar drinking a bottle (maybe waiting for my table to become available) I might not be so inclined to tip the full 20%. Normally, in that situation the bartender only opens, and pours the first glass - which is fine and all I expect from service at the bar.

yes, it's serendipity (again)

People rave about that frozen hot chocolate....but I didn't think it was very good. The worst part was I walked 30 blocks to get it :(

I've noticed the same problem...I think it only started today for me. If I keep scrolling down, it continues again after the red block, but as RGR stated, It blocks out whatever thread was it its way.

Seafood Market In Atlanta

Buford Farmer's market. Buford Hwy, just outside 285, on the West side of the road.

Rehearsal Dinner - Decatur/Ponce/Emory

Try Wahoo Grill in Decatur. I just went there for a party of about 100 people. It was not a seated dinner, but a buffet instead. They did a great job and everyone loved the food.
They might be able do a seated dinner for 25. http://www.wahoogrilldecatur.com/social_events.html

Food in Atlanta, GA

French - FAB
Italian - Antica Posta
Thai - I agree with stacystacy13 on getting Vietnamese food instead. If you're a true Hound ;), you'll venture out to Buford highway and try the asian places there. (And it won't cost you anywhere near $40)
Have fun!

Rehearsal Dinner - Decatur/Ponce/Emory

Check out Rustic Gourmet. I used to go there a few years ago. Very quaint and good. (off Zonolite Road). I'm not sure, but it appears they are no longer an open restaurant, but specializing in private dinners.

Atlanta, GA Dining Suggestions????

Rathbun's and Floataway Cafe are 2 of my favorites.
Com Grill off Buford Hwy - Vietnamese.
Kyma - Greek www.buckheadrestaurants.com/kyma
Something fun and delicious for an out of towner (although they have similar places in California) is Gladys Knight & Ron Winans' Chicken & Waffles http://www.gladysandron.com/

Trying to get Babbo reservations... weird message

don't give up! I bet the circuits really are busy. You're competing with people trying to get reservations for July 21st (which is a Saturday night).

Magnolia Bakery

I'm so glad to see it wasn't just me! I thought the cake was very dry, and don't get all the hype and long lines. I could have done better with some Betty Crocker out of the box. But, at least I gave it a try.

Atlanta Butchers

Fergusons Meat Market in Cumming, GA - http://www.fergusonsmeatmarket.com
Got whole pork shoulders for a BBQ cook-off. (Shields didn't have much of a selection. More of an 'upscale' butcher shop). Fergusons is the real deal.
I've also heard that the Sweet Auburn Market downtown has some good butcher shops

Best Indian in Atlanta

I like Zyka. I've heard that some think it's too salty, but I like it - especially the Nan and Chicken 65. It's always full of Indian diners as well, which is a good sign.
It's a very casual place - counter service, stryofoam cups, plates and plasticware

hardest reservations to get?

Great Tip!!! Thanks!

Grass fed beef in Atlanta

I'm going to his new steak place tonight actually. I'll report back tomorrow.
