ici bistro- impossible to get a reso!!

Really? Glad you had success, though it leaves me curious as to why I got the brush off! Anyways, I am going to ask someone else to call for me. Hopefully that will do the trick...

ici bistro- impossible to get a reso!!

Frankly the conversation didn't get into what was available in May - I was sort of in disbelief that there was nothing available for four weeks out, especially after calling so many times. Anyways, thx for the encouragement - it's good to know I am not the only one who can't seem to get a reaervation!

i know - i hear it is amazing, which is why we were so excited to try it. i guess it is just the attitude of the person i spoke with. i made resos at alinea recently and they also had availability issues but were much nicer about it! anyways, not worth being annoyed about things like this - there are lots of other places to eat in the city.

I received a gift cert for Ici Bistro for Christmas...since then have called weekly to try to get in. The machine usually is full but tonight someone actually answered the phone. But I was told I was out of luck unless I wanted to wait and "chance" it on an empty table, or sit at a bar, and that they were pretty much booked for the rest of the month (yes, all of April). Asked if we could refund the gift cert and also was told no. Now I know having a resto ain't an easy business...but this seems a little customer unfriendly! Anyone else had this problem?

ISO non-toxic and non-stick pans in GTA

thanks... seems like people who've tried the alternates to teflon aren't exactly pleased with the performance/quality. i bought an 'earth chef' ceramic coated pan (foot tv watchers will have seen the commercials) and also a ceramic coated cast iron pan. i'm going to see how they perform and hopefully one of them will work out.

thanks for these suggestions, very helpful...it's funny, there aren't that many consumer reviews of a lot of these products on the web - maybe because they are relatively new? many of them seem relatively inexpensive - maybe i'll try a couple of them out and see how they perform...

ISO non-toxic and non-stick pans in GTA

With the growing number of articles telling us that teflon isn't safe, I've been thinking about throwing out my non-stick pan. I know...cast iron is the best replacement...but I've also heard that "ceramic coated" cookware is a good replacement for teflon. Any leads on brands and stores where I could find this type of cookware in the GTA would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Toronto: favorite veg-friendly in financial district

Rain is a great suggestion...now thinking along the fusion line, I wonder if Lee would also be a good choice for vegetarians....

Toronto: favorite veg-friendly in financial district

while there are now quite a few veggie options on the food court level of things (the vegan health food place in FCP for example), there aren't a lot of veggie upscale choices (at least that i am aware of - would love to hear differently though!!!). I have found far niente, reds and jump to have the most appetizing (though still limited) veggie item/or to be the most accomodating to vegetarian requests. jump's a bit slow on service though the goat cheese souffle and grilled veggie platter is yummy....

Ground Grains of Paradise

Spice trader is probably cheaper but if you are nearer to SLM when you are visiting Toronto, the kiosk in the basement that sells the different types of salts also has grains of paradise. they are similar to peppercorns but milder and a bit fruitier in scent. Amanda Hesser, the food critic from NYC, is also bit obsessed with them :)

SOUTH ASIAN GROCERY

I used to live north/central and the closest one for me was sadroos at 487 mcnicoll, off of victoria park. A bit of a haul if you don't have a car, but it is pretty well stocked.

Austrian pumpkin oil

Thanks so much for the leads, this is really helpful!

Pizza Stones? [moved from Ontario board]

I use mine for baking bread - the crust on my french baguette is waaay better on the stone then on a rack.

i got my stone at the kitchen and glass place on yonge, just north of bloor. it's a pretty great place to find all sorts of kitchen gagets, etc.

Austrian pumpkin oil

Any tips on stores that sell Austrian pumpkin oil in downtown Toronto? I see there are a few online options but want to avoid shipping...and, more importantly, waiting for the product to arrive! Any tips would be much appreciated :)

flour and sugar storage containers?

thanks! i had not thought of going there, that place is great and reasonably priced.

flour and sugar storage containers?

anyone have a good suggestion of where to get reasonably priced air tight containers for storing flour, sugar, etc.? also any tips on whether glass is better than metal would be appreciated. thanks!
