Food Souvenirs from South Africa (Johannesburg)

Thanks to everyone - we got a little bit of everything and people appreciated it! I have to say, i am sad that i wish i had bought more peppermint crisps for myself... hoarding the last couple that i have now! Thanks again!

Food Souvenirs from South Africa (Johannesburg)

Thanks so much for these suggestions - they both sound great!

Food Souvenirs from South Africa (Johannesburg)

Hello,

I'm going to be in Johannesburg at the end of July and was wondering if kindly chowhounders could point me in the direction of food souvenirs that I might be able to bring back. I have quite a lot of people i'd like to give a small souvenir to (close to 100),and so i thought even some unusual (to the U.S.) sweets, candies or snack items that travel well would be okay - although probably not wine. If these could be purchased at a supermarket it might be even better. I've thought about Rooibos tea and biltong (before I realised that meat products are prohibited from being brought into the U.S.),

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Foods you eat strangely

oh my goodness! i was going to write about this as well, thinking i was the only person to eat skittles this way! dh always kind of looks at me like i'm crazy... i also then take the one that squishes and try to eat the broken pieces of candy shell of first (not ever really successful at that, though)

Foods you eat strangely

we used to make these with left over spaghetti and those sandwich makers irons where it would seal the bread in the middle and sides while toasting it (the diy hot pocket makers). those were my favourite sandwiches growing up!

When did you stop liking sugar?

i heard somewhere that our craving for sweets and craving for alcohol come from the same place. So perhaps it's b/c those that drink alcohol don't crave sweets b/c their cravings are met?

OMG it's hot!!!! Remedy

mmmm! 냉국! so refreshing. question: if you substitute with japanese eggplant, can it just go in raw? i've never had it this way, but it sounds intriguing.

Help! How do I cook eggs over easy without breaking the yolks?

do you "break" the whites a little bit when you crack the eggs into pan? this made a difference for me, since it helped the whites cook more evenly and then made it possible to flip the egg nicely.

how do you stop coughing when the thai pepper catches in your throat?

i don't know if this might disperse the pepper more, but i have been told when food feels caught to try to take some deep breaths through my nose with my mouth closed. it takes a couple of breaths, and a couple of sips of water in between but it seems to stop the coughing

Making brown rice in my rice cooker.

If you soak overnight, you don't have to double the water. I did notice, however, that cooking brown rice in our rice cooker made it burn out faster, but then again, it might have been the rice cooker.

Your Favorite Rice Dish

although i love rice too much to name a favourite, in our family (and perhaps common to lots of asian families?) we eat what my 4 year old has dubbed "the good rice." hot rice, soy sauce, sesame oil and furikake and growing up a raw egg but now tofu all mashed together. total comfort food and a quick meal.

best mexican in the OC?

is this the same chronic tacos that is also in mission viejo (past the mall)? we drove by a couple of days a go and wondered about the name

Why is everyone feeding my teenager pizza?

growing up, pizza was a treat and so a pizza party was the one of the best things. these days, children eat pizza so regularly that when we have children over to our house, they rave about having home cooked food and aren't too crazed about pizza. perhaps, giving these parents the benefit of the doubt, they're still thinking that pizza is the most welcome food? but it's kind of a sad that these days home cooked meals are more a treat than going out.

Adding salt to milk?

i haven't done it before, but i have also been told that adding salt to milk makes it last a little longer.

Trying to identify a Korean drink (juice?) [moved from Ontario board]

it sounds like it was for bok bun ja ju (raspberry wine). i find it to be pretty sweet.

Old school table manners... what were you taught?

i think that's lovely - i just wish someone had told it to us before we sat down to eat because we were so horribly embarrassed!

Old school table manners... what were you taught?

when i was in ukraine back in the early 90s, there was a group of us (americans) sharing a meal with a host group of ukrainians. we were laughing and having a good time and trying to converse with the host group when one of the ukrainians leaned over to me very quietly and said, "here in ukraine, we do not talk while we are eating. we wait 'til we are finished"

Is there any reason why so many Indian desserts and sweets are SOOO sweet?

thanks for the info - i would love a recipe! this rice has "haunted" me for the last 8 or so years since i've been to India, simply because i didn't know the actual name and searches for yellow rice didn't leave me with much to work with. thanks again!

Is there any reason why so many Indian desserts and sweets are SOOO sweet?

When in India we were given a lovely but small box of indian sweets for a rather large group of us, which we didn't understand until we realised that it was so very sweet that you could only eat a little bit at a time. The little that we ate was really good - a type of white fudge - and just enough to satisfy any sweet cravings. But speaking of Indian sweets, there was a dessert that i really enjoyed that we had with a home cooked meal that they translated simply for us as "yellow rice." It was not too sweet at all and i believe was sticky and had raisins and perhaps other things in it. Would anyone happen to know what the actual name of this dish is? Thanks in advance!

Halloween and Peanut Allergies

As she gets older and goes out with other friends perhaps she could do some trading as well?

I'm glad i read this post because peanut allergies ARE getting more prevalent (as can be seen at my child's preschool) and it's nice to be sensitive to it for when we give out treats for next halloween.

SD Fire Impact

i wanted to let anyone who was part of tierra miguel farms (located in pauma valley) know that they also were evacuated but they are expected to update on the 29th. there were no deliveries this week.

Wedding RSVP's choosing (or changing) your meal option? [moved from General Chowhounding Topics]

actually, i've changed my mind before at a wedding and i make sure to ask if there would be a problem (i know this might sound terrible (rude/tasteless, etc), but i've actually done it twice!) the first time, i had pre-ordered red snapper but found it essentially inedible - i couldn't even cut into it - so asked if there was any filet left (there was - everyone who had RSVP'd hadn't shown up) The second time it turned out that the meal i had ordered contained an item i coulnd't eat so i very politely asked the server if it would be ok and he said he would have to check. I had to wait until they had done a final head/table count of all the orders, but it looked like several people had changed their mind (or had forgotten, like the OP) because it turned out that it would be ok to change my mind.

hard boiled egg not peeling right [moved from General Chowhounding]

although i only use this metod (trick) to amuse children, i have found it produces a perfectly peeled egg every time...

Unique foods - LA?

they also have them at korean bakeries - they're called chapsal (sweet rice flour) donuts and are also filled with sweetened red bean. there are ones that are sesame covered and ones that are not. galleria on olympic and western has a bakery on the bottom level that has them. i thought i also saw them at the bakery inside the little tokyo plaza.

Rinse the rice?

what a great idea! we don't have an actual garden but do have a container garden of sorts.

Dread pesticides; can't afford all-organic diet.

thanks gottasay! haven't had the chance to read this thread in a while ( a lot to digest). but good to know my two very tiny little cents counted for something!

Kun Jip - what to order?

sorry - realised it was nakji (octopus) dol sot bi bim bap - whatever the name, still excellent! :)

Kun Jip - what to order?

last time i was there, i had an ojingu (squid) dol sot bi bim bap which was excellent (and i'm from la) so perhaps one of the dol sots is the way to go? dol sot bi bim bap is the hot stone pot mixed rice and is pretty big so after having the bbq - which i didn't have a chance to have so couldn't comment on it - perhaps some people can share one of these?

Overheated oil gum

maybe goo gone?
