Reykjavik, Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm
Great report back Delhiwala. Did you have any other great food experiences in Reykjavik worth booking in advance?
Looking for great neighborhood to find "Chowhound" worthy walk up restaurant.
You know, I was feeling lame about recommending North Beach until I read this post. I sent them there, and just got the "we had the best time ever" call. Thanks for tips.
Questionmarket Popup
We are not currently running a survey, so unfortunately, you may be experiencing some spyware issues targeted to pop on Chowhound. I know this will sound like a commercial, but CNET has a site called Download.com that can help you with finding and removing that software- if that's the problem.
Looking for great neighborhood to find "Chowhound" worthy walk up restaurant.
Paul, thank you for the clarification. I *should* have known better! I was trying to find a neighborhood in SF where a tourist could walk around and have a better than average chance of finding a great restaurant not already on the "must go to" list that everyone makes. I know you can find it anywhere, which is the point of CH, but I want to increase the statistical probabilities for these folks. They don't need to stay in the neighborhood, just be able to walk around and have lunch in dinner in the same area. Sorry for such a random question!

What are good CH neighborhoods in SF? Suggestions?
Dinner tonight in San Francisco
Again, per the North Half request, I would recommend A16 for not only the food, but you can usually get in as a two rather easily. You can find more info here: http://www.chowhound.com/search?item_type=Topic&query=a16&x=0&y=0
Whatever you do, be sure to write about where you went!
Lunch on Saturday
I'm a fan of lunch at Rose's Cafe (2298 Union St; (415) 775-2200) on Union/Steiner. Specifically when taking people from out of town. You can walk down Union street for shopping post lunch, or go to Crissy Field. I'd highly recommend the Pancetta, Nettle & Cheddar Frittata too.
cheap to moderately priced non-touristy seafood in SF?
I would also recommend Plouf. While classically San Francisco should you be bringing in out-of-towners, the food (specifically seafood) is very good.
Glasgow, Edinburgh recommendations?
Thanks Rekha and DavidT for the recs. I'll be sure to post any findings when I go this summmer....
Glasgow, Edinburgh recommendations?
I agree with Rekha that the deep fried Mars bar is something you check out. I know when I went there in 2001 that's what I came back talking about.
I'm actually going back in June, and I'm trying to see if there are any distillery tours near St. Andrews that someone would recommend. A surprising lack of information when search Google...
chow.com vs. chowhound.com
The short version is that they are sister sites. Chowhound is the community site, and CHOW is the editorial site.
The long version is that CHOW will be the brand we focus on from a business standpoint. CHOW will have branding efforts behind it, and will work with marketers on their brand promotions as aggressively as possible. For example, you may have to view ads to see content from CHOW. While Chowhound will continue to have marketing messages on it, we will always do our best to deliver these messages in a lower-profile way so as not to disturb the conversation.
Together, we can allow our marketing partners to reach the most discriminate food enthusiasts in the world, maintain the vibe on Chowhound, and continue to keep the lights on. The name, URL, and credo of Chowhound will continue, and we'll keep this unique community protected from a lot of the marketing, branding, etc., we plan for CHOW. In short, CHOW enables us to balance the necessary business requirements while enabling the Chowhound community conversation to continue.
Yes, you may see the CHOW name around in more places than you did before (for example, in the title bar). But the spirit of Chowhound remains the same, and we can look forward to an uninterrupted flow of chow tips for years to come.
Report from Engineering
Great point, and something we can do with some of our major new features. With our new setup, we can actually do this without a lot of duplicate work on our part. So expect preview beta testing going forward.
The International Board listing
That's next. As you can see, we're fighting one problem at a time....
How about local chowhound wikis?
Sorry, we didn't get to a point where I thought we could talk about it just yet! We're working on it right now... Some news and preview soon, promise.
How about local chowhound wikis?
We are finishing up the first stage of a Chowhound makeover. A longer post on it will be coming on Tuesday. The first stage will focus on board design and images. We've been listening to the feedback, and you can expect to see tighter boxes for better browsing. We will also launch image uploading, the first of a number of new features for Chow & Chowhound. Again, more Tuesday after we take a look at our first stable build.
San Rafael - The Loop (Bellan/Kerner) – Brazil Marin, West Brooklyn Pizza, pupusas, markets, delis, etc ???
Sorry, I guess I was being a bit too negative last night. I didn't mean to say that there are NO great food places in the Rafe, just that I feel some of my 'hounding efforts have been a let down. I'm pretty familiar with most of the San Anselmo and Larkspur places, and probably need to spend more time in Fairfax. Also, I'm as close to Novato as I am to downtown San Rafael, so I may be in the awkward middle. I was just saying I need to head more North than South. I love Sol Food, Mollie Stone's and Le Croissant! Thanks for the tip on the breakfast place, as we've been trolling around trying to find a good one. I'll check it out.
San Rafael - The Loop (Bellan/Kerner) – Brazil Marin, West Brooklyn Pizza, pupusas, markets, delis, etc ???
I guess it is *still* technically San Rafael... Mulberry Pizza on Smith Ranch road is worth checking out, but quite a hike away from downtown San Rafael. Mick talked about it recently here: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/37158 Absolutely no atmosphere, but very solid pies and good salads. Also there is a movie theater across the street to make it worth the hike up.
Having just moved to the area, it is a bit depressing the lack of interesting food in San Rafael. I'm going to start spending more time going north, as almost everyone has raved about Petaluma's offerings.
Social engineering vs. engineering engineering
You're about to see a significant facelift to the site after the new year. We spent a great deal of time studying the old site, and listened in great detail to Jim and the moderators about what makes the site tick. We tried to address some of those elements the best we could in the redesign. We will continue to tweak the site to increase the value to greatest number of people as possible. We will give you more information about the design changes after the new year, and I'm sure we will face a healthy amount of cheers and jeers whatever we do! But do know that we are trying to make Chowhound a useful resource for trading chow tips, a healthy and lively community and, of course, a great business. Thanks for sticking with us, and we'll hopefully see you in 2007.
Have a great new year everyone. Be safe!

You guys will be very pleased the first week of the year. I'm sorry, but I'll have to leave it at that for now.
Current Date Wrong
That's a weird one! Thanks for the heads up. We're working on it!
Looking for great Currywurst in downtown SF?
OK, so thanks for helping out Robert and Stromboli! I was giving a presentation and wanted to demonstrate the power of the Chowhound community- and you came through once again. Before I went into my speech, I posted the topic above. By the time I finished, Robert had already posted..... it was great!
However, when I clicked over to the Schroeders website and the polka music came blaring out, they all started laughing and decided to stick to California food while they had a chance. I can't tell you how dissappointed I was to NOT be able to walk into Schroeder's with 35 German media people and break into a heavy polka with some Currywurst. I'm going to go check out Suppenkuche, as I've heard great things about it. Thanks once again for the help!

Hey - I have a VIP group of German visitors, and we need a good place for currywurst dinner tonite in SF, please help.

That feature is not currently available, but it is a good idea. Thanks for the feedback.
Bookmarking/Email notification changes
Thanks for the feedback everyone. We're working on our messaging, which includes email notifications and newsletters, so it may be a bit buggy over the next couple of days. Please keep sending us feedback, and be as tolerant as you can be!
Thanks!
Pet Peeve...
This is something we hope to address with a new notification feature. I think often some of our question posters are first-timers, and they may forget to come back and check each time a new post is made to their thread.
