Unfollow not working?

I'm guessing this may have to do with the differences between your main profile page and your "following" page. The public landing page of your profile (http://www.chow.com/profile/56762) shows all conversations you've participated in. Your 'following' page, which other users can't see (http://www.chow.com/profile/56762/fol...) will show only the conversations that you're still following.

That said, your username and avatar at the top right should link to the following page of your profile, not the main page; we changed that back when the "unfollow" option was first added. Do you happen to have the main page of your profile bookmarked from prior to that change?

Unfollow not working?

Our system definitely doesn't show you as following that thread, and I'm not seeing any recent email notifications for you you either. Is the issue that you're seeing that thread show up on your profile? If so, specifically what page?

Dragging photos/adding photos not working

What you're seeing is actually a feature of Safari and Chrome behaving badly- when you drag and drop an image file into an open window, the browser assumes you want to load and view the full-sized version of that image. I'm seeing the same behavior on Chrome / OSX unless I drop the image very carefully into the "Upload a photo" box.

All of that said, I believe there are a number of options we have to make drag and drop uploads a bit friendlier. Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention.

Multiple Responses

Under normal circumstances that should be possible, but we have had reports of certain third party software causing some trouble after the first time you reply. Do you have Ghostery or other such ad-blocking software installed? If not, then this may indicate a new problem of some sort.

This is sounding like a bug. Are you seeing the black outline everywhere, or just on iPad?

Clicking on names in a thread

This looks to be the unintended casualty of some unrelated fixes we released yesterday. We have an eye on the cause and are looking into it. Thank you for the report, and our sincere apologies for the inconvenience.

Can't post a new topic (discussion, Q&A, whatever) using Google Chrome

Disabling ABP or white-listing this site are the two simplest solutions. I believe other configuration options may also have been described in the discussions collected in Melanie's post.

Can't post a new topic (discussion, Q&A, whatever) using Google Chrome

The behavior you're describing is a known issue caused by certain ad blockers and/or script blockers. Thus far we have been unable to reproduce these problems in Chrome without any add-ons. If you do have an unaltered version of the browser and are still experiencing this problem, please let us know so we can dig a bit deeper.

In either case, Melanie Wong has been kind enough to compile links to a number of discussions with more details on this and similar problems: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/984149

I think you've found the crux of it- Opera 12 is thirteen months and eleven major versions out of date, and is likely responsible for the problem. The most recent version of opera (23, as per your test) seems to handle the permalinks without issue. Midwestern and Drongo, if you update your browser to the most recent version that should resolve the issue.

If you're having trouble starting a new topic . . .

Curious. I tested out that article and was able to create a link post successfully. One possible issue based on your description- where are you pasting the URL? When you first open the form for a link post, it should go in the box at the top of the form (immediately below the post type selector).

We've had periodic difficulties processing links from NYT in the past due to their unique policies, but we should have contingencies in place for those. Could you please provide the link in question so we can take a look?

Regarding replying to oneself, was this immediately after editing your post? If so that shouldn't be a change from existing behavior. It hasn't been possible to reply to your own freshly created or edited posts without refreshing the page for as long as I can remember.

Unfortunately we can't take credit. The most likely explanation is that your browser cache held onto the page after you closed it (especially if you returned to the thread using "recently closed tabs" or other such browser features).

Thank you, that's extremely helpful. We've identified the problem and and are looking into it. As a workaround, if you change the "https://" at the beginning to just "http://" (remove the "s") you'll be able to post it as intended.

What you saw is actually a bug with the link format that we're still working out. Link threads currently fail to tell you when we run into trouble processing a link that you provide, which is clearly undesirable. We've since put some protections in place that should prevent you from saving a the thread when that happens, but we're still working on getting a more useful error message to you as soon as you paste in the url.

For reference, could you please provide the link you were trying to post? It may help us identify more possible causes of these issues.

That's a distressingly long loading time for a single photo. Were you on the cellular network or wifi at the time? If the former, how is your reception? If this happened on a high-speed connection that could indicate problems.

I did. Assuming you're referring to the "RE: c oliver" next to my name no longer being a link, that's a known issue addressed elsewhere in this thread. If, on the other hand, you mean that collapsed / gray / previously-read posts can't be expanded when you click on them at all, that's something we'll need to look into separately.

Pulsating, Gyrating Flashing Ads?

That's definitely not intended behavior. Did the spinner stick around even after the off-screen content loaded?

Can't get to drop down under avatar, top right

I gave this a shot in Firefox on Windows 7 and wasn't able to reproduce it thus far: for me, the drop-down sticks around as intended so long as the mouse goes straight down from the profile image to the menu.

To rule out a few possibilities, could you please try restarting Firefox with add-ons disabled (under the 'help' menu) and trying the drop-down again that way? If that still doesn't address the issue, could you please take a screen-shot of your browser window with the drop-down open?

chrome wont allow me to post

The "Sorry, we can't find that page" message is actually an error page. Did that message appear in the "Sign Up/ Log In" pop-up box when you tried to post? That's highly unusual if so.

The explanation that would make the most sense to me is that your login on chrome has somehow ended up in a weird state. I've posted a log-out url at the end of this post- can you please try clicking it in Chrome, logging back in, and giving it another shot?

EDIT: posting the promised URL would probably help - http://www.chow.com/account/logout

That's definitely not normal, but thus far I haven't been able to reproduce the behavior you saw. This came up when you clicked the red "Save to Profile" button under the recipe's image?
