Trouble posting photos

At the risk of a stupid question, these aren't the same pictures that were failing in September are they? If so, have you had successful uploads on ANY photos, or does it fail on everything? Feel free to use the testing thread if you need it - http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/733630

None of my threads are showing up as new anymore...

If I didn't know any better I'd think you'd been inadvertently logged out, but that wouldn't make sense if it went back to normal on its own. Very strange. I'm glad to hear it's back to normal for now, but do let me know if you run into this again.

As for DeisCane: does this describe what you're experiencing as well? No NEW indicators anywhere, and all posts expanded in every thread?

None of my threads are showing up as new anymore...

No need to delete, what you've described sounds like an inconsistent and elusive bug we're tracking. If this is the same problem I think it is, you likely found several threads marked "NEW" when viewed from the board; but on when you visited those threads, all of the posts were expanded, new and old alike. Does this describe what both of you are seeing?

Change to mobile site?

Forgive me, but could you be a little more specific? Is this an issue with the "NEW" flag, or something more entailed?

Did the second attempt go through or was it rejected even after a refresh?

"Restaurants" Database To Be Eliminated

Hi Jim, thanks for trying to clarify this situation. The analogy is good, and makes a lot of sense.

I just want to say from an engineering perspective that we do have a compelling technical reason for the timing of removing these pages and the access to the data. Your compromise has also been discussed at length in the past. At this time I think it would be inappropriate to make a promise to bring this data back in one form or another in the future, however we would like everyone to know that we know the value of the data and are working hard not to just throw away chowhounds' hard work. This is a very complex and nuanced situation and we are working diligently to find a solution that will help everyone have a better experience on chowhound.

What happened to "Search This Board" option?

This is correct.

CHOW Restaurant Data Export Tool Now Available on Your Profile

This is not an issue of writing a complex select statement and dumping 'your' data into a file. This is an issue of ownership legality and convolution of what has been contributed by whom. The definition or job role of engineering has not changed in the past year. We are not trying to feed a line to the people who make decisions. We are not the people who designed and implemented the feature, but somewhere along the line it became unclear who contributed what content. It is not cut and dry like you are implying.

We do however have a very clear and concise view of who contributed review data, hence we created a tool for you to get review data back. I am sorry if it is not sufficient in your view, but it is what we were able to do.

'Chow had no qualm with tossing years of IT work and the money associated with that.'

We are actually engineers. IT people are the people we contact to ask for new computers, servers we need set up, etc. They perform a completely separate function from us, totally independent of this database other than maintaining the hardware it runs on.

We are intimately aware of your concerns and ideas about what we can do to save or salvage this dataset. Please believe me there has been a ton of discussion regarding our options for this. Unfortunately what you are asking is just not feasible at this time.

help save my recipes!

Any particular recipe, or is save failing for you on everything? If the former, could you provide any examples?

I'm a bit baffled as to why the DNS was causing the issue, but if that fixed it then all the better. Sorry we weren't more help.

Still finding fully expanded threads in which the posts have all been read by me earlier or the day before

mcf, this is a hell of a stretch, but do you use the "Unread Posts" page on your profile? In particular, do you / have you ever used the "mark all as read" option there?

Javascript and Java are actually separate entities, apologies for the confusion. I'm not sure why running the disk utility worked last time; but perhaps re-installing Safari reset that browser's Javascript settings. Was anything altered between reinstallation and the return of the problem?

Thanks for letting us know, I'll notify the video team.

The behavior you're describing indicates that the Javascript is not running for you. Do you have Javascript disabled in those browsers? The fact that it's failing in both seems odd.

Hitting REPLY takes me back to my profile listing in Firefox

It happens only when you first log in, and only if you're on the topic page when you do so. This should be true on any browser, but the conditions are so specific that it isn't immediately obvious.

Hitting REPLY takes me back to my profile listing in Firefox

This is a known issue, and fortunately an easy one to work around. When a reply link sends you to your profile, use the back button to return to the thread, then refresh the page. The reply links should then work normally.

We are aware of the problem, and (despite delays in addressing it), do plan to see it fixed. Our apologies for the trouble, and thank you for your patience.

Still finding fully expanded threads in which the posts have all been read by me earlier or the day before

More or less what I figured. The big problem with this bug is that, in order to see what exactly is happening, I would need to check on some data *before* you view the thread and the problem occurs. Which, in turn, we can't readily predict without knowing what's happening. Catch-22.

I'll continue to keep an eye out for this. The fact that only certain users are seeing the problem must mean something, so that's one lead at least. Let us know if you notice any further details, and until then, thank you for your patience.

Ok, assuming you're right about misremembering the NEW flag in the test posts I linked to, this is sounding like the correct behavior so far. Can you click through to that topic one more time? If no one else has posted since the last time you viewed the thread, it should show up as fully expanded with no NEW flags anywhere.

Still finding fully expanded threads in which the posts have all been read by me earlier or the day before

Note that, if you've never read / clicked on either of those threads before, every post should appear expanded with a NEW flag the first time you visit the thread.

Quick experiment:

The site claims that you have read http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/824512 before, but new posts have been added since. When you open that topic, are the old posts collapsed and the new posts expanded with NEW flags on them?

Alternatively, you've never viewed anything from http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/829465 - does every reply show up expanded with a NEW flag?

Posting lag again?

Looks ok now, but a problem like this tends to be highly time-sensitive. Let us know if another thread appears to behave inconsistently.

Where is the "new" logo?

It sounds like a number of things were behaving oddly around the time of your post- are you still experiencing the issue, or have the "new" icons returned?

Problem with site navigation

This would make some sense if it were only happening when you used the bookmark. However, if it is happening when you click through via the Saved Boards menu on the site, something a little strange is going on.

For the sake of argument, could you please copy the URLs from the problem bookmarks and paste them here?

Is auto-linking of Restaurants and Bars turned off?

> Does that mean it was unintentionally altered is someway?

It's a bug, yes. Unfortunately, there are a number of potential causes and no clear explanation at this time. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Is auto-linking of Restaurants and Bars turned off?

To be strictly accurate, auto-linking has not been intentionally altered in any way since well before this topic was started.

Still finding fully expanded threads in which the posts have all been read by me earlier or the day before

Ok, since at least two of you have confirmed that there are no "New" flags within these expanded threads, that narrows this down nicely. The behavior you're seeing indicates that, for one reason or another, the site thinks that you have already viewed all of the posts in these threads. Based on that belief, it gives you the entire thread expanded because it no longer knows which posts to collapse and which posts to leave alone.

There are a number of reasons this might be happening on either side. For example, if you are clicking the link to that thread repeatedly, refreshing the page, or otherwise causing it to load multiple times, you'll get the fully expanded no-new-posts display.

Alternatively, certain quirks on the server side could also be causing it; for example, someone above mentioned that if someone else posts while you're writing a post, the other person's post won't show up as "new" for you because of the timing.

In short: I now know exactly what is happening- we just need to figure out why. Please keep an eye out for any patterns in the affected threads, the way you get to them, and anything else that might be relevant.

Tapatalk Support

Tapatalk is designed to work with several standardized out-of-the-box forum software solutions. Since CHOWHOUND is not one of these standard forums, Tapatalk support is extremely unlikely.

Still finding fully expanded threads in which the posts have all been read by me earlier or the day before

Vital clarification: when you click into the thread and find everything expanded, does the "New" flag appear anywhere inside the thread? We could be looking at two VERY different issues depending on whether or not the flag appears even once inside the topic.

Edit bug - text runs together

Many thanks. The problem, as we understand it, should never appear outside of IE. If it does, then something is going exceptionally awry.

iPad page format

Inconsistency seems to be the name of the game with this one. We've been able to reproduce it once or twice, but only by spinning the IPad back and forth ad absurdum. Needless to say, this is not terribly helpful in identifying the cause. Still, we do have some ideas; don't give up hope just yet.

If anything develops, we'll let you know. Thank you as always for your patience.
