CHOW Pick: Stuff We Like

SideSwipe Spatula Mixer Blade

As a former pastry chef and avid home baker, I spend a lot of time with my stand mixer. And as any fellow baker knows, there isn’t a recipe that won’t require you to stop and scrape down the sides of the mixing bowl and paddle attachment at some point. But some ingenious person at SideSwipe has now developed a paddle-spatula combo attachment, acting as a standard mixer blade that scrapes the sides for you. Chowhounds have been raving about its ability to wipe clean not only the bowl sides, but the bottom as well, while mixing everything from smoked salmon spread to buttercream frosting. The flexible silicone fins scrape the mixture from the sides and push it downward, providing a more thorough blend and rendering the stop-and-scrape obsolete.

Anxiously awaiting the version for the bowl-lift mixers...

I have a copy of an email about that from last year sometime, that still sits in my inbasket taunting me. I long for one, but they don't ship up to Canada. Or they didn't, anyway. I'll have to check again and see if they've started.
