Start Shopping with Reusable Bags

We are in the midst of what will be known later as the 2007 Flood of Reusable Market Bags. And it’s a good thing, since only about 1 percent of plastic bags get recycled. Grocery stores have had reusable bags for a while, but companies like Flip & Tumble and Green Bag are basing their entire business on selling them. Of all the options out there, my pick is Baggu. It folds into a tiny case that fits in your pocket when not in use. It’s extremely light (2 ounces), and strong too: One Baggu holds about three times as much weight as its plastic counterparts. After field testing, lugging groceries up a hill, I’m happy to report that the handle is comfortable over your shoulder, resting on your arm, as well as in your hand. Plus, the seven pretty colors it’s available in don’t hurt.

Baggu, $8 for a single bag, $22 for a three-pack, $38 for a six-pack

I do use canvas bags on occasion. I also reuse the plastic shopping bags as free garbage can liners. So to really go green I would need to find something new to line my garbage cans with. Newspaper maybe, but since I read my news online I don't have any around the house. I like the idea of those corn-plastic bags. They probably have a downside too.

I use them for garbage too, and I'd also be curious to hear any green--and economical--stand-ins for doggie duty.

Here are green biodegradable bags for pet waste. http://www.ecoproducts.com/Home/home_...

Can someone explain the point of biodegradable bags for trash and dog waste? If these bags are picked up by the trash collector and trucked to the landfill with everyone else's trash, what is the benefit of it eventually breaking down in the middle of a massive landfill full of plastic?
It's not like you're going to compost your trash bags in your backyard, right?

I have one of the bags pictured here that stays in my car all the time. But for serious grocery shopping trips, nothing beats ACME Bags™ EarthTote™ Reusable Shopping Bag. They're a little bigger than a paper bag, really heavy duty and the best part is that they have a flat bottom so they stay open while the cashier wings your groceries down the track at 30 mph...I LOVE them! Buy them at www.reusablebags.com.
