Yet Another Thing America Has Ruined

This video by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) is quickly gaining steam around the web for its slick animation and fresh approach to tackling food issues.

Though it hints that Americans are to blame for destroying traditional Japanese diets (with greasy hamburgers), most of the concepts discussed can be implemented anywhere. I wish the USDA was half as cool as the MAFF, but the USDA can’t even build a good website.

Right. Like we tied Japanese people down and force-fed them junk. Why can't they be responsible for their own choices?

Ruth... did you view the video, are do you just like talking without bases? Never in the video did it imply that foreigners "made" the Japanese do anything. It is simply a factual video, educating Japanese consumers on the widespread impact of importing food that can't be well produced within Japan... and asking for its people to make a change in behavior.

Would you say... why don't Americans just stop whining... nobody tied us down and force-fed us Costa Rican bananas?

Hmm...I did view the video and I don't see where it hints that Americans are to blame for the change in Japanese diets. It just says the Japanese used to eat X way, but now they eat Y way. The original poster might want to rethink that statement since, as I recall, Japan imports its food from other countries besides the US. If any blame is going to be assigned, it should include all exporters of food to Japan, not just one.

Kind of a rock and a hard place if you ask me. Japan consumes a good portion of the world's seafood, so increasing their consumption of fish will only accelerate the depletion of the world's fisheries (the far majority of which are nowhere near Japan's coastal waters).

There isn't much in the way of an ideal solution for a small country with a high population density, coupled with the fact that much of the country is not ideal for agricultural purposes.......

Wasn't there also a thread here a few month ago about severe heath problems caused by the TRADITIONAL Japanese diet. Something about all of that char-grilled fish driving the level of certain cancers in Japan through the roof?

No poster has addressed the content of the original post - the video. It's probably technically way oversimplified, but in four minutes, it does a great job of outlining the issues and possible solutions. And I love the dancing animals!

What do you think?
