Best Bets - SF Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurants
By rworange
San Francisco Bay Area
Fisherman’s Wharf without fear. It is mainly over-priced, mediocre eats. Locals don’t eat here unless visiting relatives insist. Here are the best bets and a handful, like Gary Danko, where locals actually do dine.
-
1.
Alioto's Restaurant
8 Fishermans Wharf, San Francisco, CA 94133
Eat at the bar and stick to the lunch specials or ask what fish is fresh. Great crème brulee and espresso.
-
2.
Ana Mandara Restaurant
891 Beach St., San Francisco, CA 94109
Upscale Vietnamese food in a restaurant that looks like a movie set.
-
3.
Bistro Boudin
160 Jefferson St, San Francisco, CA 94133
Not bad. There’s a great view of Alcatraz and if not outstanding, one of the better Wharf choices.
-
4.
Blue Mermaid Chowder House
471 Jefferson Street, San Francisco, CA 94133
Not bad. Locals like the crab and corn chowder.
-
5.
Boudin Sourdough Bakery & Cafe at Bakers Hall
2890 Taylor St, San Francisco, CA 94133
Marginally recommended chain.Good stop for a sandwich or a baked goods Skip the clam chowder in a sourdough bowl. Buy a can if you must.
-
6.
Buena Vista Cafe
2765 Hyde St, San Francisco, CA 94109
Only stop for the nice view and the signature Irish coffee. Skip the rest.
-
7.
Fishermen's Grotto
9 Fishermans Wharf, San Francisco, CA 94133
There have been some ok reports. Click on name for Chowhound reports.
-
8.
Franciscan Restaurant
Pier 43 1/2, San Francisco, CA 94133
Part of a local chain. There have been some ok reports. Check the boards. It only marginally makes this list. The mussels are one of the better options. Great view
-
9.
Gary Danko
800 N Point St, San Francisco, CA 94109
Best Bet – Destination restaurant with one Michelin star
-
10.
In-N-Out Burger
333 Jefferson St, San Francisco, CA 94133
Marginally better than average fast food at this West Coast chain
-
11.
Kara's Cupcakes
900 N Point St, San Francisco, CA 94109
Good, if pricey cupcakes in unusual flavors. Good coffee.
-
12.
McCormick & Kuleto's
900 North Point Street, San Francisco, CA 94109
This national chain has average food and a spectacular view. The happy hour specials are worth a stop if in the area. Otherwise eat elsewhere. Usually a place for business meals and large groups.
-
13.
Norman's Ice Cream & Freezes
2801 Leavenworth St, San Francisco, CA 94133
Good. Serving locally made Mitchell’s ice cream, halo-halo, smoothies and hot fudge sundaes.
-
14.
Pompei's Grotto
340 Jefferson St, San Francisco, CA 94133
There have been some ok reports. Check the boards.
-
15.
Scoma's Fisherman's Wharf
47 Pier 45, San Francisco, CA 94133
Great three course $22 lunch prix-fix (until 3:30). Fresh fish is good at dinner, but the sides are mediocre and prices way too high though one dinner entrée is more than enough for two.
-
16.
Darren's Cafe
2731 Taylor St, San Francisco, CA 94133
Small Vietnames restaurant that also serves American breakfast such as chicken-fried steak and Italian lover's omelet. There is grilled chow mein.
-
17.
Crab House At Pier 39
39 San Pier, Francisco, CA 94133
While this is part of a restaurant group that also owns The Franciscan, Dead Fish and Stinking Rose, there was a recent good report. It won't be outstanding food, but it will be reliable and maybe better than some other choices.
