Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: The Movie

In 2010, an animated interpretation of the beloved children’s book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will hit the big screen. For those who aren’t well-versed in children’s books about food, Slashfood explains the premise of this picture book:

Set in the very fictional town of Chewandswallow, the residents don’t have to shop at grocery stores the way the rest of us do. Instead, all their food was delivered by the weather. Morning would start with a drizzle of hot coffee, followed by eggs, toast and bacon. Life was good in Chewandswallow, until the weather becomes unpredictable and the food that comes from the elements becomes life-threatening.

The two men developing the film for Sony Pictures Animation—Philip Lord and Chris Miller of the animated series Clone High—are planning to put a new spin on the story:

The duo say they want to turn it into a family-friendly spoof of disaster movies such as Armageddon and Twister. … Sony put together a teaser for the film, which featured a giant pancake falling on the White House, corn on the cob rolling along the Great Wall of China and a spaghetti-and-meatballs tornado destroying a city.

A recent report from the Cinematical blog says that SNL’s Andy Samberg and actress Anna Faris are doing the lead voices. Now, if only someone would adapt my other favorite food-related kids’ book, Strega Nona—the one about the Italian grandmother/witch with the magical pot of pasta.
