Capping Off a Controversy

Are you the kind of person who titters behind her hand every time you drive though an amusingly named small town? Boring, Oregon; Intercourse, Pennsylvania; Glasscock, Texas. I must be, because each time I’m on I-5 in Northern California, I can’t help but giggle when I see a sign for Weed.

Apparently I’m not the only one who makes hay from the name. The head of the Mount Shasta Brewing Company, Vaune Dillmann, wanted to promote the city in which he brews, so he threw the saying “Try Legal Weed” onto his bottle caps.

Even though the label isn’t hippied out and the beer doesn’t have any “special” ingredients, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau has officially frowned on the bottle caps (registration required). The letter from the agency notes that it “can not condone alcoholic beverage labels that contain any names of drugs, drug terms or slang associated with drugs.”

But Dillmann says the caps are innocent—just a way for him to celebrate his town. He told the Associated Press that “I’ve never tried marijuana in my life. I don’t advocate that. It’s just our town’s name.”
