Woe the Truffle-Lover
Brace yourself, truffle aficionados, dark days may lie ahead. Due to ongoing drought in Europe, truffle yields are down—way down. According to the AP article, “Farmers say production is down 50 to 75 percent this winter.” This, of course, will be driving up the prices … to $560 a pound.
The drought has also affected truffle-growing regions in Spain and Italy. Italian white truffle harvests are down 75 percent from 2006, while Spanish yields have dropped by 50 percent over the past five years.
“[Farmers] blame global warming, warning that if thermometers keep rising, France’s black truffle will one day be just a memory.”
