Raise a Toast to Repeal Day
America may be odd in having banned alcohol consumption (really, what were we thinking?), but Prohibition unwittingly brought us Repeal Day—the holiday that celebrates the end of having to drink in secret. Now, that’s something worth toasting.
Celebrated on December 5, the day the 21st Amendment was ratified and America’s experiment with temperance officially ended, Repeal Day is an easy one to honor. As bartender/blogger Jeffrey Morgenthaler writes on the Repeal Day website:
There are no outfits to buy, costumes to rent, rivers to dye green. Simply celebrate the day by stopping by your local bar, tavern, saloon, winery, distillery, or brewhouse and having a drink. Pick up a six-pack on your way home from work. Split a bottle of wine with a loved one. Buy a shot for a stranger. Just do it because you can.
Freedom to drink, what could be more American? (Ever since Repeal Day, that is.)
