Happy National Cheesecake Day!
Today, in honor of this unofficial holiday, America celebrates cheesecake—the dessert, that is. (The word cheesecake can also refer to a pinup photo.) The researchers at Holiday Insights weren’t able to find the creator or origin of this holiday, but they have their fingers on the pulse of oddball food fests: Apparently, yesterday was National Lasagna Day and Saturday was National Milk Chocolate Day.
Cheesecake has a long history, dating back to ancient Greece, and sources say that this dessert was first written about in 776 BCE, when it was served to Olympic athletes. If you were in the Chicago area and you wanted to bring back the tradition of eating a heavy dessert after strenuous physical activity, you may have sprinted over to Eli’s Cheesecake—holiday blogger Jack of all Days notes that they offered a free slice of cheesecake to anyone who stopped by their bakery before it closed at 1 p.m. today.
If baking your own sounds like a tastier idea, Yumsugar offers some tips on how to make the perfect cheesecake, and Slashfood shares some recipes from RecipeGal. Need to send a cheesecake to a faraway friend? If you don’t mind dropping some cash, Junior’s sends its famous New York cheesecakes in a “stay-fresh container” (starting at $29.95 plus shipping). Blogger Hint-o-liME even offers a money-saving option—wait for cold weather and mail a frozen cheesecake in a padded envelope. (Sounds scary, but this blogger says it can be done!)

I didn't read your post & mention of my blog until yesterday. But I just had to mention that the envelope I sent the cheesecake in wasn't even padded. It was just one of those flimsy priority mail ones you get free from the post office. I don't think I'd do it again, but I was in a bind, so I took a chance & luckily, a slightly smashed cheesecake didn't deter my family from eating every last crumb :-)
