Ruby prepares jai (here's her recipe), a healthy Buddhist vegetarian stew (and a good luck food!) that comprises 16 ingredients. Each ingredient is separately wok-cooked, then added to the pot, making this a Chinese New Year labor of love. (Ruby also gave us her recipe for Chinese New Year cake.) Ruby was introduced to us by Chowhound Melanie Wong. Thanks, Melanie!

Cooking over the holidays is best when it’s done with family, especially young family. Small, nimble fingers plus curiosity about family traditions makes the recipes go faster! Here, Martha Jubrey shows her grandson Desmond how to make her candied yams dish for Kwanzaa (here's her recipe).

Paola Bagnatori knows Italian food. And as managing director of the Museo ItaloAmericano, a museum in San Francisco dedicated to Italian and Italian American art and culture, she often teaches students her signature dish: Potato Gnocchi with Tomato-Porcini Sauce. With the help of her granddaughter, Isabella (who’s made this dish with her nonna a few times before), Paola discusses the proper preparation of dried porcini mushrooms, plays hot potato, and attempts to make her gnocchi in record time. This woman really is the Gnocchi Queen.

With 8-year-old Olivia’s assistance, Gloria Smith (“Gigi” to her granddaughter) prepares a dish she calls Plantation Casserole. Gloria, who is hyperglycemic, has been making it since her kids were little, because she wanted to prepare something healthy. This recipe, if developed today, would not be named Plantation Casserole, nor would it be deemed especially healthy. But neither of those things matters between Gloria and Olivia; what matters is how hard you pack the cheese, whether there’s nasty garlic in there, and how difficult it is to chop pecans.

There’s love, there’s respect and teaching, there are disagreements over chopping onions—it’s family. Caleb and Irma aren’t kosher, and neither is this recipe, but it’s the one Irma’s been making since her anti-Vietnam, pro-women’s-rights activist days, when she needed to bring the family together but couldn’t spend hours in the kitchen.

Welcome to the first installment of CHOW’s new video series, Cooking with Grandma, a nostalgic trip down memory lane that records a special family recipe. Here, Alvina Mangrai shows her granddaughter Alyssa how to make her prawn curry and coconut rice. Thanks to Pat Tanumihardja, whose blog, The Asian Grandmothers Cookbook, helped us find Alvina and Alyssa!
