Naked Chicks Covered in Food: Avant-Garde or Cliché?

"This is about life," artist-chef Tiberio Simone says at the beginning of the short video introduction to his La Figa Project, a collaboration between photographer Matt Freedman and Simone that resulted in a photo book that's basically nudes-with-food. All right, some of the stuff he says is true. Food is sexy, beautiful to look at, with curves and colors that put one in mind of the zzzzzzzz oh my God! I'm so sorry, I just dozed off right there! I was listening to some dude presenting yet another rationale to show skinny 20-year-old women naked, and I just sort of zoned out. Why is that?

 

 

 

Could somebody let La Figa Project know that this has been done?

    In my art I express the human form with the sensuality of the eatable ingredients to show the beauty of human body focusing is sensuality not sexuality. This is a cookbook about not only nudes with fantastic photograph but also a recipe cook book with 40 Essay about food, love , and life We are not only what we eat , but with who we share our mind and our body. Two things must remember Eat well and Make love-COLLAPSE

  • The food looks yummy. So do the naked people. But claiming there's some sort of "philosophy" on display here is preposterous, and that's what's so irritating about this type of thing: high-minded claims being slathered on what is basically a cootch act just as the sauces are slathered on the bodies. Might be cool if it was made deliberately -- a opposed to inadvertently -- funny.

    Hi Ms. Slayton, as the photographer of "La Figa: Visions of Food and Form" I have to thank you for posting this -- one of the most important messages of our book is that all kinds of bodies are beautiful. That is why we include photographs of men and women of all shapes, sizes, and ages, and is why Tiberio devotes on entire chapter to his philosophy on this in the book. Though this will be clear to anybody who reads the book, your post made me realize that we are not really conveying that message on our site -- we will try to address that ASAP.

Or better yet, Tiberio and I would love to send you a review copy so you can see for yourself. And after you have had a chance to look at it, we would love to have you do a phone interview with us, so you can hear first hand about Tiberio's personal mission to bring body acceptance to American culture.

    As far as the comparison with the Padma video, I am not sure I get it -- yes, of course we are not the first people who have made a connection between food and sensuality. That has been going on at least since ancient Roman times -- that is exactly why we created this book.

    Really, if you get a good look at Avedon's "Nastassia and the Serpent" photograph, you'll realize (or you should) that you can't do anything any sexier than that, so forget the food on the naked girls and concentrate on one or the other. I'll be looking at the food photos. That's just me.
