Walmart Presents: Feasting on the Cheap

Sharp news commentary blog the Awl breaks down Walmart’s $20 Thanksgiving feast, which actually includes a disturbingly long list of edible features for a disturbingly low price. Prices vary a bit from state to state, but in general your Jackson gets you:

• One 12-pound Grade A turkey
• Three 11- to 15.5-ounce cans Green Giant vegetables
• Two 14-ounce cans Ocean Spray cranberry sauce
• Three 6-ounce boxes of Stove Top stuffing
• One 5-pound bag of red potatoes
• One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
• One 22-ounce pumpkin roll cake

This is both inspiring and terrifying.

  • Walmart, just as much as the chain supers, pimps for overpriced national brands too much. If you have any discount supers or Costco like stores in your area, you can eat better for less with generic or regional brands.
Canned vegetables are usually scary - go with frozen and whatever's fresh and cheap unless storage is an issue (like food banks).
    Count your blessings!

  • As the previous posters said, your entitlement is showing. I'm the first to bash Walmart, but not everyone can afford an elaborate feast the likes of which are shown on this site. Twenty dollars for one meal is a blessing for some families, especially those who fall below the poverty line and yet are still unable to qualify for food stamps. Here in Cleveland, some need the help of a cheap meal or a food bank. My father and his senior pastor run one from a church on the West side, and due to a mistake in ordering they were forced to cancel their pre-Thanksgiving distribution. Unless they manage to work things out by Tuesday, the hundreds of people who rely on this food bank will be left without the groceries they count on to feed their children. Think about that the next time you want to get uppity about cheap food.-COLLAPSE

  • I don't see how this is "disturbing" and "terrifying." Can you explain?

  • I think one of the most memorable meals I ever had involved some very thin bean soup served just prior to a church pot luck. I didn't understand why we couldn't have a nice meal until my mother explained that that was all some children would have for their supper. I think one of the most memorable meals I ever had involved some very thin bean soup served just prior to a church pot luck. I didn't understand why we couldn't have a nice meal until my mother explained that that was all some children would have for their supper. Let's all think about donating to a homeless shelter -- they've been overwhelmed with need for a terribly long time now! Food banks are seeing double the usual need! Let's not just donate on a holiday when everyone descends with 'good cheer' and do our 'something' at other times. And keep doing something along the way. Unemployment nationwide sits at 10.2% nationwide and just hit 11% here in NC. Times are terrifying for a lot of human beings who otherwise participate fully in society. We should all consider this prior to passing the bowls and platters around our holiday tables. Shelters need personal care items, milk, formula, linens, trash bags, toilet paper, cleaning supplies..... We all have things to donate; even kids can learn the importance of giving something of their own.-COLLAPSE

  • Am in agreement with Shanagain and Samalicious. Terrifying? Go volunteer in a soup kitchen and you'll understand that all of us are simply a heartbeat away from being in that terrifying position ourselves. Remember this holiday is about gratitude.

  • When other grocery stores offer much the same deal, it's a bargain. When Walmart does it it's "terrifying." Take your smirky entitlement somewhere else.

  • Walmart mekes me thankful I have healt insurance.

  • Walmart has made me thankful I have health insurance.

  • I'm guessing that for some, this is a far cry from disturbing and simply a godsend right now. Your privilege is showing, and it might indeed be disturbing.
