Spoiled Milk in Zimbabwe

Dan Mitchell at Slate provides a rundown of Nestlé’s latest scandal (lest we forget tainted milk, a spy controversy, and pushback against its water division). This time, Nestlé has been buying milk directly from the farm of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe’s wife Grace. The scandal is this: Gushungo Dairy Estate is not only owned by Mugabe’s wife (if you’re not yet in the loop, Mugabe has a bit of a spotty record, human-rights-wise), it’s among the farms seized from white farmers during the country’s not-very-enlightened ongoing land reforms.

The weird twist to the scandal is this: It seems to be going away now that the Dairy Board of Zimbabwe is buying the milk and selling it to Nestlé, rather than the food giant buying directly.
