How to Make Lemonade Using the Whole Lemon

Tess Masters, who also goes by the nickname The Blender Girl, is a blogger who specializes in vegan and vegetarian blender recipes. She suggests that lemonade shouldn't be limited to lemon juice: She throws the whole lemon, peel and all, into her blender and makes a healthy, frothy, refreshing drink!

  • I make it this way but I hack away at least half of the peel/pith and then I strain it. It's still a bit frothy. I like to add blackberries too and watch it turn hot pink :)

  • May I suggest that people take the zest off, discard the pithy white part and toss in the lemon? The zest has a lot of the taste in it but the pith? Yuk-o not for me. Your also best to use fresh cold spring water that you put into the freezer for a moment or two. I make mine with lemon, orange (or similar) and grapefruit. • The pith makes this extremely bitter! I tried it last night- it was NOT GOOD! Barely edible, and you lose the natural tangy sweetness of the lemons. I really wished I had just taken a couple minutes to juice the lemons properly. CHOW, how could you recommend this??

  • Yes it makes it extremely bitter unless you drink in right away. If you let this set for more than an hour it will not taste well at all.

You can still use the blender though! Just cut the peels right off and follow the video.

  • The peel doesn't make it bitter?

  • how many lemons? and does it keep in the fridge or need to be served right away? i guess i'll find out...

  • genious idea, just bought a blender at a thrift store....this recipe will be our 'does this thing even work' trial run, lol! thanks.

  • i think i might try this with orange blossom water

  • I love margarita shar the recipe

  • Hey Dahveed! A margarita with the whole lemon or lime sounds YUMMO!
Sally - Yes, make sure all of the seeds are removed before blending.
To address the question of bitterness:
Yes, this is a gourmet lemonade that tastes a lot like a limoncello mocktail.

But to split the difference and make a creamy frothy lemonade that more closely resembles conventional lemonade use: 1 cup fresh lemon juice, 1 cup agave or other sweetener, 1-2 whole lemons cut up and seeds removed (depending on how large they are) and 6-8 cups of water. You can add ginger juice, berries or mint to this and it is divine.
This strikes a nice balance for those of us who are not fond of any bitterness.-COLLAPSE

  • Love that Aussie accent. Its like the way the British would speak if they were fun.

I've got the same blender and it makes a killer vegan margarita! Too bad it tastes so good paired with a juicy steak or grilled chicken. Maybe next time I'll just use the whole lime instead of the juice.

  • It's the seeds that worry me. Some of them are kinda big.

  • Pithy minds think alike!

  • wouldn't the pith make it bitter?

  • wouldn't the pith make this unbearably bitter?
