For really sticky gooey sediment, fill have the carriage with very hot water (195F/90C degrees) or hotter) and add a tablespoon of either granulated dishwasher soap OR Borax plus a drop of detergent. The grit will help scour away the goo.
Ground flax seed...the WORST to get out of a blender... so now I add it AFTER blending up a smoothie...pour smoothie into tall glass and THEN mix in the ground flax seed with a spoon. Yeah, no toothbrush, for sure no matter what for the blender.
Great suggestion about holding back some of the liquid in a recipe, using it at the end to "clean" out most of the blender residue (which you then add back to the bowl or pot so you waste virtually nothing. I hate to admit it, but blending with dishsoapy water to clean it more easily never occurred to me ... but I'm the genius who used to spend 10-15 minutes literally peeling an avocado to make guacamole, before someone explained the 10-second "split and scoop" method, so maybe I'm an atypical 'chef' (!).-COLLAPSE
There were people who didn't know this? I still take it apart to give it a final wash and to air dry, however. In many recipes, you can hold back some of the liquid ingredients and use to get most of the residue out of the blender, thus saving, in some cases, a good deal of material (works great for tomato sauces, enchilada sauce and the like).
Well, that's exactly what I do. Except for the toothbrush.
Bliterypoop-when you have something sticky or otherwise stubborn, blending the soapy water really does help. Especially if you want to get the bottom of the blades--for those blenders that don't have a removable blade assembly.
Unneeded if you have a sprayer next to your faucet. Just turn the blender upside-down and spray up into it. (Soak for 5 minutes first for sticky stuff.) And then just wash normally. Takes almost no time.
