Jill Cooks Spinach Meatloaf from “The Essential New York Times Cookbook”

CHOW.com Senior Food Editor Jill Santopietro is not a huge fan of meatloaf, but she's game for giving the version from The Essential New York Times Cookbook a try. Here she makes it for the first time. You can find Jill's adapted version of the recipe here if you want to try making it yourself.

In Jill Santopietro’s CHOW Cooks from Books video series, recipes from cookbooks—new releases and classics we love—are brought to life.

  • Wow that looks good, but I'd skip the tomato sauce on the side...I absolutely hate tomatoes.

  • Nicely done, have seen a similar meat loaf demonstrated by Michael Smith, Chef at home, he laid the bacon from side to side and down into the bottom of the pan then laid the meat mixture on top. When cooked the loaf was removed from the pan to a plate to be cut and served.

  • I really enjoyed this video, but I knew the recipe was going to be good once I saw the bacon! Like the others, I liked hearing her honest thoughts, full disclosures, and the way she pointed out the weird phrases in the recipe. It would be interesting to see her try more recipes. If I had to give her show a title, it would be, "The Perfect Recipe?"

  • Totally love jill, i am so so so so happy to see her back in videos since Tiny Kitchen. I emailed NYTimes chewing them out for letting her go! So I'm glad I can watch her again.

Love the way she goes through her thought process out loud and gives honest reactions. This is a new innovative format for cooking videos. There just aren't enough, post more! Chow needs to post more videos more...+READ

And as a fan, I have a humble request that Jill do something that doesn't center around a big piece of meat next time. I am vegetarian and would love to be able to make what she does next.-COLLAPSE

  • Great video, yet again!
I like that you went full disclosure with the book and I cannot emphasize how much I like the idea of running through a recipe the first time...it makes watching any other program showing cooking seem obsolete!

  • fantastic video. great comfort food

  • Jill -- Great video and I liked your approach to reviewing the book. I'll definitely check out more of your series on Chow. I'll have to wait until next winter to try the recipe because right now meat loaf is the last thing I want to eat. Winter is just thawing in Chicago and I'm pushing the limit on how many days in a row I can eat asparagus. -- Liv
