Ceramic Greek Coffee Cup

Back before there was a Starbucks on every corner, practically every diner in Manhattan served coffee in small blue-and-white paper cups decorated with the legend “We Are Happy to Serve You.” (Really? Somebody should tell the guy behind the cash register that.) Now that everyone buys gigantor $7 cups of caramel crappucino with sissy jackets and sippy cup lids, the little cups aren’t quite so ubiquitous. Except at my house, where I drink my drip coffee from the Ceramic Greek Coffee Cup, a fancy breakable version of the classic.

The Ceramic Greek Coffee Cup is pleasantly heavy in the hand and sized just right if you want a cup of coffee, that is, an 8-ounce serving with maybe a little bit of cream. No room for steamed milk or caramel syrup, sorry. If you wanted a cup of cream and sugar, why’dja ask for coffee?

  • Don't the real ones sometimes have little fold-out handles? They should have that in the ceramic one so you done burn your hand. This CHOW pick isn't funny, but I like these:

  • As far as I can tell, if you want the paper version it's called the Anthora cup, available from Sherri Cup Inc, in Kensington Connecticut.

  • Can't say I have fond memories of the COFFEE in those cups (I'm old enough to remember when a person would ask "Starbucks who?" here in NY). I roast my own coffee these days, but this sounds at least like an amusing item to have. But I wish it was at least 12-16 ounces--I take it black/unflavored/no sugar, but 8 oz isn't enough!

  • Since they're ubiquitous in NYC, why not call up an NYC paper goods supplier? They should have thousands of them.

  • Can somebody tell me where I can order the real thing? (I mean: paper cups and lids!) I would love to have these in L.A.
