Portland: We Have You in Our Sights

Portland, Oregon, has the DIY scene down when it comes to food, so we are looking forward to heading north and filming for the CHOW Tour: Handmade.

We're going to check out the cocktail scene (where bartenders are making everything from smoked ice to their own tonic water), as well as the booming microdistillery trend. Rad sandwiches will be on the bill, as we bring you a look at how local salumi and corned beef is being made.

And of course we'll film some of the top-notch food trailers. Should it be the homemade poutine at Potato Champion? English muffins at Brunch Box? Let us know which ones you think do the best homemade foods and we'll try to get them on board!

  • Please try The Park Bistro for brunch or lunch. You will love the artistic cooking ~ organic, local, hormone free, and best of all delicious! www.thepark-bistro.com

  • Cupcake Jones: they're delicious. Kornblatts Delicatessen: try the reuben. Henry's 12th St. Tavern: 100 beers on tap. Portland City Grill: Best view from a restaurant in Portland and an awesome happy hour. El Gaucho: one of the two best steaks I've ever eaten, world class. The Montage: Only open late, I don't know of any better cajun food in Portland.

  • Podnah's Pit on a weekend morning for brisket and eggs with a heavenly biscuit.

  • Mother's for her Wild Salmon Hash. This is a "to die for" dish! A real love pat for your tummy. Everything on the menu is delicious...but this is hands-down our favorite!

  • Pizza: Depokos, Wy'east, Pyro, Ken's, Apizza Scholls
Sandwiches: Bunk, Meat Cheese Bread, Big Ass, Tabor's Schnitzelwich, Addie's, People's Pig, Kenny & Zuke
Burgers: Toro Bravo, Pigeon, Foster Burger, Brunch Box, Garden State

  • Oystereater couldn't be more wrong. The foodcarts simply add to the rich texture that makes up the tapestry of Portland food. Not all great food comes from a formal kitchen, and the Portland cart scene is proof of that.

Both the restaurants and the carts bring their own unique flavors to this great city. If you can't appreciate the different tastes, best to keep your mouth shut.

  • and if you want fancy, go to Castagna

  • The food carts are so, not over..jaded oystereater...and they are doing the most DIY food in town...my favorites...not all are food carts...

  • Skip the food carts, it's a fad and it's over. The food quality is not that high. The real talent in this city is in the restaurants that have built a name for Portland as a Food destination.

  • Visit "EaT: An Oyster Bar" for an awesome braised beef Po'Boy! They're also famous for fantastic Farm Fresh oysters and Cajun Creole food all made from scratch in house! www.eatoysterbar.com

  • Oh yeah, they also have over 30 flavors of macarons at Pix including one called Meka Leka Hi Meka Hiney Ho which is Absinthe flavored with chocolate covered pop rocks :)

  • Pix Patisserie - Everything there is made in house from scratch (Chocolates, french Desserts, ice cream) and definitely have a glass of Champagne while you are there because there are over 50 Grower Champagnes on the list!

  • Definitely check out the artisanal work of Tressa Yellig at 'Salt, Fire and Time,' in Portland's Northwest area. She is a master of hand-crafted foods, utilizing old world techniques and supplying lucky Portlanders with a weekly box of foods (similar to a CSA).

She also holds Community Feasts and Brunches! Portland is lucky to have such a place!

  • Agree with septemberlights. There's a doughnut shop on SE Grand & Burnside that's supposed to be tons better... it's the one all the police go to!

The only doughnut I'll go to Voodoo for is the Mango Tango.

Go to Grilled Cheese Grill (11th & Alberta), The Green Lady (10th & Washington, raw food made by southerners), and Pine State Biscuits!

  • Go anywhere. Eat everything. Just dont do Voodoo Doughnut!! Its so overdone and has been on every food show that comes to Portland.... I live here and aside from the stoner-kitsch factor its really nothing special. just sayin'
