In Forest Hills, a Lebanese Sleeper

Wafa’s cooks up homey Middle Eastern chow in an out-of-the-way corner of Forest Hills. This is an authentic Lebanese kitchen, NicoleFriedman writes—“I say kitchen because that’s really all there is; you can see her pots as she prepares the food right in front of you.”

If the owner is baking eggplant, get it; it’s a lush, sensuous pleasure, seasoned with olive oil and pomegranate juice. Other standouts on the rotating menu are eggplant-chickpea salad, spinach pastries, stuffed cabbage, and fresh-made kibbeh: bulghur bites stuffed with lamb and pine nuts. The hummus is thick and creamy, sprinkled with paprika and drizzled with olive oil.

Wafa’s is the latest occupant of a hard-luck space, and business has been slow. “For anyone in Forest Hills or nearby who would love to try authentic Lebanese,” Nicole urges, “please support this great find and spread the word!”
