Endless Simmer has begun a stormy flirtation with a mysterious old-school Chinese American food staple: egg foo young.
“I’ve always been curious about the dish, you know, there being egg in the title and all. But I’ve never ordered it. So when 80P and I ordered-in Chinese the other night, I went for it: vegetable egg foo young.”
Chowhounds on the other hand have been hot on the trail of good egg foo young for years.
Whenever I'm trying out a Chinese restaurant for the first time, I always order shrimp egg foo yong. There's a certain perfection that can be attained with this dish that is telling about ingredients, flair and saavy associated with other menu selections; and, delicious indeed. If it's not on the menu, that itself tells me something about the restaurant. Beaumont, here I come!
If you're passing through Beaumont, Tx go to the House of Chee restaurant and order the egg foo young. Best I've ever had, pieces of pork, shrimp, lots of vegetables with a Chinese seasoned brown gravy. Delicious.
You can make egg foo young at home. Its like fried rice. You can mix different stuff in it. I use ham chopped into small pieces. You can find receipes on the web. I am sure there are dozens of variations. Use or add what you like. that goes for the gravy too.
good luck.
