Rachael Ray Plans to Shut Up This Christmas

Rachael Ray is scheduled to have throat surgery nine days before Christmas, and the blogs are snarking out about it. Eat Me Daily’s response is typical: “While the alleged reason for the surgery is that Ray needs to get rid of a benign lump in her throat, we prefer to think of it as a medical intervention to get her to shut the hell up.”

It turns out that Ray’s characteristic mildly hoarse voice, which drives some people batty and charms others, is the result of a throat polyp, perhaps exacerbated by frequent screaming of “Yum-o!”

“My problem is: I talk and get overly excited,” Ray told USA Today. “I’m breathing wrong. I’ve bruised my vocal chords. And I never shut up long enough for that to heal. They’re going to try to teach me how to speak properly.”

With softball set-ups like that, it’s a wonder the blogs haven’t been even more out of control.

  • Now if they could get Sunny Anderson to shut up also, it would be perfect. I honestly think Sunny out-talks Rachael and does it in such a loud voice she must be directing her comments to the last row. I do love Ina Garten's conversational style, as if I were right in the room with her.

  • Well thank god. Between her and my mother, I was planning on drinking enough Kamikaze Christmastinis to kill a buffalo.

    My liver thanks you, Rachaeoul

  • I guess nobody found my comment funny? Oh well, I gave myself a chuckle. Seriously, some people need a valium & some vodka.

  • It's so easy to take a criticism and label it a product of "jealousy", but in Ray's case that is totally off-mark. She makes herself an easy target, by not being shy about a single thing. She seems to have an idea of what people like from her, and is not afraid to exploit it to our ad nauseam. She seems to have an idea of what people like from her, and is not afraid to exploit it to our ad nauseam. While character flaws are what make each of us unique; and this sometimes creates an illusion of being interesting, she persistently pours on the things that seem to earn her points, and does so with no restraint and with no regard for anyone that might understand excellence. In other words, she offers each of us an over-dosage of anything good about her, and has no finesse by any definition. After all, finesse in one's art is attained when one possesses master-level knowledge of “when to hold back” and never arbitrarily just pours-it-on. Her recipes are assumed sensible and practical for those with not a lot of time, money or imagination. If she is a master of anything at all, it must be she is a master of making a first impression, which has a tendency to be a lasting one.-COLLAPSE

  • I don't like RR, I find her overly perky and rather annoying, which is why I don't watch her shows.

I don't see any reason to trash talk her and don't understand what it is that people get out of being ugly about her. I really hope that we hear that Eat_Nopal didn't really leave that ugly, unnecessary post; perhaps his account was hacked? What is there to be gained by being ugly in a public...+READ

  • It always cracks me up when people get their panties all in a bunch when some celebrity they've never met gets abused by people. If so many millions of people despise what this woman does and stands for, there must be reasons other than "small-mindedness".

  • Although the "hot dog salad" made me laugh, here is what I particularly like about RR. Unlike so many folks on television, with her, the concept came before the TV. What I mean is that her signature show--TMM--is based on the demonstrations she did as a produce manager--not to get on television, but to sell produce. She's not some pretty face that some smarmy producer thought: "Hey, nice jugs;...+READ

  • three words: hot dog salad
    that's why I don't like her.

  • @Eat Nopal: First of all, that's her husband, not fiance. Secondly, that was truly rude and crude, especially for this forum. Why do you want to sound like a troll? I know you 'contribute' to this board fairly often, but I don't remember if you always say things like this or not. It was very offensive.

I, too, don't understand why people have to make 'snarky' remarks about her. There's an entire 'I hate Rachael Ray' blog out there. Don't people have better things to do with their time than to bash a celebrity. The only reason I could think of for doing that would be jealousy. Honestly, there are people I don't like on television. I just don't watch their shows. I don't start an 'I hate....' site. I personally hate haters. It's that simple. I happen to like Rachael Ray. I watch her shows and sub to her magazine. (There are LOTS of 'I hate *someone*' sites out there. I think that's astounding. It's obvious there are too many people with way too much free time on their hands. Maybe if they did something productive with THEIR lives they wouldn't hate other people so much?)-COLLAPSE

  • She is so annoying, I always assumed the only way she could keep her fiance was via daily blow jobs... hence why she speaks like she has something stuck in her throat.

  • from "Chowteam" in the Food & Media section: "Less Bashing of TV Hosts, Please" and then a whole two paragraphs on that very subject.

How exactly do you reconcile that plea with this blog entry's title, the blog quoted, and the mention that Ms. Ray's voice "drives some people batty"? I don't think I'm the one with cognitive dissonance, yo.

  • She strikes me as a warm, positive person who enjoys life and wants to help novice cooks, people who grew up in the age of processed food, and cooks who have time pressures, grow in confidence, variety and creativity as they try to provide their families and themselves with a healthful, interesting diet. (Not to mention that, as a devoted pet Mommy, I appreciate that she's donating the profits from her new dog food to animal concerns. She could just concentrate on building her empire, but instead she's trying to give back.)

I find it disgusting that anybody would make such mean remarks about *anybody* who's facing a health situation, large or small, and I certainly don't see any reason to be so nasty about this woman. Shame on anyone making cheap shots, in hopes of getting a cheap laugh, over Rachel Ray's surgery, and I hope they will find that others treat them better than they have her when they find themselves in her shoes someday.-COLLAPSE

  • I'm with you xiena...I mean I get that some people might perceive her as too over the top, but seriously, what is the purpose of insulting her. I really enjoy her show and I think she's done a lot to help non-cooks experiment in the kitchen, and I can't believe the amount of time and effort people put into being negative and saying hurtful things. Self-esteem issues much?

  • I love the Rachael Ray shows and people that don't like her should find something else to watch. I can never figure out why people go online to fight and insult people.. Is that little minds or what?

  • Not to mention the complete and total lack of regard for anyone else's well being. Those blogs, of course, not being written by actual people but just being all snarky and out of control on their own. Unruly blogs.
